Just what is the baptism of the Holy spirit?
And how does one know(other that what we read in Acts) that the baptism happens to them as an individual?
I purposely omitted the word evidence.

I believe all believers have the Holy Spirit in a measure. Let me liken it to the Spirit hovering over the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies.

I think the baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience of having the Spirit overflow the Holy of Holies and fill the whole temple, flowing out of the gates and windows, immobilizing the flesh(carnal mind) and enabling the operation of the members of the body and an effective priesthood in Christ.

Hebrews 4; Romans 12; Galatians 3; Acts 2 and 4; 1 Corinthians 12-14; Ephesians  the whole thing ;o)

I believe it is a renewable experience that ebbs and flows as we abide in Christ.

EW.... I like that.  :dsunny: I modified my opening post, simply because the word "evidence" is used in some doctrines.

Yea, altho I speak in tongues(therefore obviously believe in it), I think the teaching that one particular gift or another is evidence of the baptism is just sectarian nonsense intended to put people in bondage to man.

I think the evidence() of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is the abundant manifestation of the divine nature, i. e.- the love of Jesus in the mind of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.

I think it may be manifested in many ways because people have different tasks.
Tools of the trade.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

I agree with that, altho none of the tools are effective outside of the divine nature. That is why the Lord is always teaching us His ways, and seeking to grow in us. It was His love that reached us. The rest equips us. If we abide in Him our fruit will remain. If we walk in His love our works will be gold, silver and precous stone- standing through the flames in His eyes on the day.

:cloud9: My  :2c:.....I had the baptism in the HG a month after I received the Lord as my savior. I read the word without having anyone standing over me telling me "it" was "not for today", ect., ect., and believed the Word. Therefore as a free gift that is essentially more of Him, why WOULDN'T I want it? I felt like water rising up out of my belly, raised up into my throat, but it was spiritual water.

What I didn't have, was the evidence of speaking in tongues, because my carnal mind blocked the manifestation of it. I didn't understand what my "part" was in the process (ie. open your mouth and speak), and as such I thought the HG would just like, "take me over". The HG is a gentleman and does not force it on anyone. Two years later, I finally "got it". The whole point about the Spirit praying through you, is that it proves He's alive! Which is why the Word says that tongues and interpretation is for unbelievers.

I have been in assemblies where one person spoke a literal language. Once it was a visiting pastor. Turns out he was speaking some Ukrainian dialect, and the message was for one lone woman who was visiting from the Ukraine, who came up to him afterwards, sobbing, to ask him how he knew her language. He didn't. It was a perfect example of how that particular gift is for the unbelievers. She KNEW only God could know what the man had spoken, and that in her native tongue.

I knew before he spoke, SOMEONE was going to get tongues and interpretation, because I felt plainly in the Spirit, the mighty rushing wind come into the place, swirling up about hip high. And then he spoke. There are different types of anointings and gifts, but the same Spirit.

Jesus came to reverse the curses, and that includes the one about scattered languages. The HG has a language that is from the Spirit. It matters not that it doesn't sound the same in everyone to our ears. We are to speak, as the Spirit gives us utterance. I have occasionally been told via the Spirit, what it was that He was praying about, through me, as well as through others.

We all are entitled to a prayer language exclusively for us, but there is also a gift of tongues and interpretation, which is a gift that operates for the body at large, in gatherings. I have found that the only people who talk against it, are the ones who have never experienced it.

I think fear is the primary obstacle, but also sometimes pride is the stumbling block. I've had people tell me they didn't want "it" because it made them seem like a babbling fool, and they would be embarrassed to "do that" in public. Personally, I would be afraid to tell God I didn't want more of His Spirit.

But everyone focuses on those two gifts alone, and reject it, not realizing (or ignoring) that there are other gifts of the Spirit that are "activated" via the baptism that are also important to the body. This is why the scripture says, the HG does the works. There are works of the flesh and works of the Spirit. The baptism is what enables Him to do the works of the Spirit through us. He said He has a baptism to be baptized with and how He is constrained (or bound in us) until it be accomplished. The baptism is what looses Him to work in the midst of us.

Literally, we are the candle of the Lord, and He wants to "light" His candle, ie. tongues of fire come upon our heads. Blessings....

Good Day micah7:9

Gal 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24  And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal 5:25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal 5:26  Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Simply look at your life, are you bearing the fruit?

Bearing fruit is a process, for in the spring appear the blossoms, and the sun and rain bring forth it's growth, until it is ripe for the picking.
