Yesterday, I finally did a search on "ancient Israel's Fall Feasts" to see what came up, one of the things I found out which I don't think I knew before (who can remember anything?) is that the "scapegoat" which was an atonement in Leviticus 16, was named "Azazel" the site/article said.

"Scapegoat" is translated from the Hebrew (Strong's #5799) azazel, which the article says typifies the opposer. But Strong's only translates it "goat of departure" and "scapegoat".

In Lev 16 there are the two goats, one of the two goats is sacrificed and all the sins of the people laid upon him, "but the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness." (Outer darkness?)

Does anyone know more about this? Though I will go and read closer the pertaining scriptures and any cross references listed, but wondering if anyone has received any specific insights concerning this.. I don't know why "azazel" is said to be a name for the opposer.. I suppose I could read the article further :sigh:

I find it interesting, because it's my belief Satan, the opposer, is the only one who actually makes it to the LOF as the 2nd death, which I believe could be a state of not being.. although of course there is the "for an age and an age" or "agelasting and agelasting" to consider also..

My reading this morning included the verse "but we had the sentence of death in ourselves" (2 Cor 1:9)

To my mind all these things magnify the absolute and complete Goodness of God our Father (i.e. UR!!).. that though we "all" had the sentence of death in ourselves, and also the LOF as the 2nd death was a concrete, lawful possibility for every one of us, God our Father rescued us all from it.. and the only living one I have ever read specifically as going into the LOF the 2nd death, is "the devil". (Rev 20:10) [Other two of Rev 19:20 I believe are two 'institutions' of men active at the time of Jesus'return.]

This of course occurs (after that final earthly LOF(?) after Satan is loosed from the abyss for a bit after the millennium of Jesus, and he once again deceives, and the camp of the saints is surrounded and fire comes down from the throne and devours them (Rev 20:9)... this occurs before the 2nd resurrection.

I found out there's lots of theories out there on how the Fall Feasts prophecy the 2nd advent of Jesus (since the Spring ones were so perfectly fulfilled by the first advent).
But not realizing U.R. I believe all the ones I read (or scanned) fall far short.

The term in the Bible is limited to three uses in Leviticus 16, where two he-goats were sacrificed to god and one of two he-goats got a lot, reading לַעֲזָאזֵל la-aza'zeyl; either "for absolute removal" or "for Azazel" and outcast in the desert as part of the Day of Atonement, for God is seen as speaking through lottery.[1Leviticus 16:8–10 reads:
8And Aaron shall place lots upon the two he goats: one lot "For the Lord," and the other lot, "For Azazel." 9And Aaron shall bring the he goat upon which the lot, "For the Lord," came up, and designate it as a sin offering. 10And the he goat upon which the lot "For Azazel" came up, shall be placed while still alive, before the Lord, to [initiate] atonement upon it, and to send it away to Azazel, into the desert.
—Leviticus, Leviticus 16:8–10

Azazel is a fallen angel. But considering Jesus was the scapegoat at His baptism I doubt that's teh only interpretation...

Thanks! and the links were very interesting! Molly's post of an article http://tentmaker.org/forum/bible-verses-used-to-assert-not-all-will-be-saved/matt-1618-and-the-gates-of-hell-%28hades%29-shall-not-prevail-against-it/msg129511/#msg129511 was especially helpful, including "...the very name "Azazel" itself is very significant. Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible points out that this term literally means "GOAT OF DEPARTURE." It comes from two roots: aze, "a she goat (as strong)," and azal, aw-zal -- "a primitive root, to GO AWAY, hence to DISAPPEAR, fail, gad about, go to and fro, BE GONE, SPENT." and the link she left at the end of it -

which I'm reading, thanks! And am looking for a verse "about Azazel"...

1593 עֲזָאזֵל ('ăzā'zēl) Azazel. (ASV and RSV use "Azazel," but the former allows for the translation "removal" in the margin.)
This word appears four times in the ot, all in Lev 16 (8, 10, 26) where the ritual for the Day of Atonement is described. After the priest has made atonement for himself and his house, he is to take two goats on behalf of Israel. One is to be a sacrifice to the Lord, the other is to be the "scape goat," i.e. the goat for Azazel. In all four appearances of this word, it has the preposition "to" attached to it.
This word has been variously understood and translated. The versions (LXX, Symmachus, Theodotian and the Vulgate) have understood it to stand for the "goat that departs," considering it to be derived from two Hebrew words: 'ēz "goat" and 'āzal ( "turn off."
By associating it with the Arabic word 'azāla "banish," "remove," it has been rendered "for entire removal" (IDB loc. cit.).
The rabbinic interpretation has generally considered this word to designate the place to which the goat was sent: a desert, a solitary place, or the height from which the goat was thrown (cf. Lev 16:22).
The final possibility is to regard this word as designating a personal being so as to balance the word "Lord." In this way Azazel could be an evil spirit (Enoch 8:1; 10:4; cf. II Chr 11:15; Isa 34:14; Rev 18:2) or even the devil himself (KD loc. cit.), standing logically in antithesis to Lord. However the Enoch references to Azazel as a demon are doubtless dependent on the author's own interpretation of Lev 16 and Gen 6:4. Some who adopt this demon reference of Lev 16 also consider the passage to be of late authorship (P document).
The actual use and meaning of this word in Lev 16 is at best uncertain. However, regardless of its precise meaning, the significant dimension is the removal of the sins of the nation by the imposition of them on the goat. In this passage sin seems to be hypostatized and therefore readily transferrable to the goat. Indeed vss 21 and 22 state that this goat is to bear away the sin of the people. Such a ritual would illustrate vividly the physical removal of defilement from the camp to a solitary place where it would no longer infest the nation.
A parallel to the scapegoat can be seen in the ritual for a recovered leper. Two birds were selected. One was to be killed and both the leper and the living bird were to be touched with its blood. Then the living bird was released. This bird carried away the evil, the leprosy itself, into the open field and then the leper was pronounced clean (Lev 14:1–9).
There is also a parallel for this scapegoat in Babylonian ritual. In the New Year's Day Festival a slain sheep was removed and cast into the river. The person who carried out this assignment was considered unclean as was the person who released the goat in the wilderness (Lev 16:26).
This concept of the removal of guilt can beseen in Ps 103:12 where God "removes" our transgressions from us.
In the nt John the Baptist identified Jesus as the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world (Jn 1:29, 36). This language is sacrificial, yet nowhere in the Law is a lamb spoken of as a bearer of the people's sins. The paschal lamb is not a sin offering. The description of the Savior as a lamb is unknown to late Judaism. Furthermore, the phrase "the lamb of God" is an unparalleled genitive combination. John may have had in mind that Christ as the paschal lamb bespeaks our great deliverance from the bondage of sin. However, what seems more likely is that he had a complex of ideas in mind. Some words of Isa 53 are discernible here: "as a sheep led to the slaughter, and a lamb dumb before his shearers ... whose soul was made a guilt offering ... and who bore the sin of many." But also discernible here is an allusion to the scapegoat. This fact is clearly seen in the words "taketh away" (cf. I Jn 3:5). In Christ are consummated all the atonement concepts of the ot.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

AZAZEL [Heb ˓ăzā˒zēl (עֲזָאזֵל)]. The destination or goal to or for which the scapegoat is sent on the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:8, 10, 26).
———
A. The Term
B. The Character of Azazel
C. Azazel before Leviticus 16
———
A. The Term
The meaning of the term ˓ăzā˒zēl is not entirely clear. The main interpretations are: (a) It is the name of a demon (e.g., Delcor 1976: 35–37; Loretz 1985: 50–57; Tawil 1980). (b) It is a geographical designation meaning something like "precipitous place" or "rugged cliff" (Sipra, Aḥare Mot 2:8; Tg. Ps.-J. Lev 16:10, 22; Driver 1956: 97–98). (c) It is an abstract noun meaning "destruction" or "entire removal" (e.g., BDB 736). (d) It is made up of the terms ˒ēz ˒ōzēl "goat that goes (away)" and is a description of the dispatched goat (cf. the LXX, Vg; it is from this interpretation that we get our term "scapegoat").
Of the four views, understanding ˓ăzā˒zēl as an epithet of a demonic personality is the most reasonable. The main evidences for this are: (a) Lev 16:8 prescribes that Aaron is to place a lot on each of the two goats provided by the Israelites. One lot designates one goat as being "for Yhwh" while the other lot designates the other goat as being "for ˓ăzā˒zēl." As the first lot is for a supernatural being, Yhwh, so the second lot should be for a supernatural being of some sort. (b) The goat designated for ˓ăzā˒zēl is sent out to ˓ăzā˒zēl in the wilderness which is one of the usual abodes of demons (Isa 13:21–22; 34:11–15; perhaps also Lev 17:7; cf. Tob 8:3; Matt 12:43). (c) In pseudepigraphic literature Azazel appears as a full-fledged demonic being (1 Enoch 8:1; 9:6; 10:4–8; 13:1; cf. 54:5–6; 55:4; 69:2; Apoc. Ab. 13:6–14; 14:4–6; 20:5–7; 22:5; 23:11; 29:6–7; 31:5; on the problems of this tradition, see Hanson 1977: 220–33; Nickelsburg 1977: 397–404; Grabbe 1987: 153–55). (d) While the name could be interpreted as the epithet of a supernatural being while retaining the order of the consonants in the MT (˓z˒zl), the etymology of the name has been explained as a metathesized form of ˓zz-˒l meaning something like "fierce god" or "angry god" which, if correct, would reveal decisively the demonic character of the being (cf. Tawil 1980; Loretz 1985: 50–57). The Temple Scroll and other literature at Qumran contain the form ˓zz˒l (11QTemple 26:13 and see Grabbe 1987: 156).

B. The Character of Azazel
Though Azazel is a demonic personality, caution must be observed in determining his exact character in the Day of Atonement ritual. Just because he is a demon does not automatically mean that he functions like demonic personalities in other religions of the ANE. In fact, there is reason to suppose that in the biblical rite he was to be considered a rather peripheral and impotent figure, hardly more than a place-holder representing the geographical goal of the scapegoat's dispatch (Wright 1987: 21–25). A main reason for believing that the formulators of Leviticus 16 thought of Azazel in this way is the tendency of Israel's monotheistic religion to reject or at least limit any power that would compete with Yahweh (Duhm 1904: 28, 32). Another reason is that the Priestly writings have very little to say about demons. The only other reference to demons besides that to Azazel is in Lev 17:7. But the use of śĕ˓ı̂rı̂m ("goat-demons") here seems to be more a pejorative belittling of such beings than an expression of belief in their reality and vitality (cf. similar use of demonic terminology in Deut 32:17; Ps 106:37).
The entirely different treatment of corresponding demonic figures in rites of elimination from the ANE seems to confirm this picture of Azazel (for examples from ancient Anatolia and Mesopotamia, see Wright 1987: 31–74). Many of these rituals speak of offended or angry deities or demons who must be propitiated so that a plague or other evil might be lifted from mankind or an individual. The attacking supernatural beings are addressed with incantations which reveal in some detail the personality of the demonic beings. The human sufferers send offerings of appeasement and substitution to assuage the demonic wrath. For example, in the Hittite ritual of Ashella which seeks to dispel a demoncaused plague among the Hittite army (see Wright 1987: 50–51), leaders of the army decorate rams with colored wools and other materials. They recite: "Whatever god is moving about, whatever god has caused this plague, for you, behold, these rams I have tied up. Be herewith appeased!" The next day the animals are driven into the open country with beer, bread, and perhaps milk as offerings. Before the rams are sent away, the leaders place their hands on the animals and say: "Whatever god has caused this plague—now, behold, the rams are standing; they are very fat in liver, heart, and genital member. Let the flesh of humans be hateful to him. Moreover, be appeased with these rams!" In other rituals, instead of being attacking demons, gods may be custodians of evil. They are called upon to take away and dispose of the evil caused by another source. For their help they receive offerings of thanksgiving. For example, in the Hittite ritual of Ambazzi (Wright 1987: 57), a woman cult officiator removes a bowstring with tin on it from a ritual patient, puts it on a mouse, and says: "I have taken away from you [i.e., the patient] evil and I have put it on the mouse. Let this mouse take it to the high mountains, the deep valleys (and) the distant ways." After this she lets the mouse go, saying: "O Alawaimi [a god], drive this (mouse) forth, and I will give to you a goat to eat." In contrast, Leviticus 16 does not speak of Azazel in any of these terms: he causes no harm, he receives no offerings (the scapegoat is not a sacrifice), prayers are not made to him. Such a laconic treatment of Azazel in view of these other rituals suggests that Azazel is not an active being that is due any sort of veneration or attention.

C. Azazel Before Leviticus 16
Finally, that Azazel appears in repressed form in the Priestly ritual intimates that he is not an invention of that school of thought but comes from a pre-Priestly form of the rite in which he played a more active role, either as an angry deity as one proposed etymology of his name may suggest (˓zz-˒l) or as merely a beneficent custodian of evil. The reason that he was retained in the Priestly version of the rite may be due to popular belief which would not allow total expunging of the personality.

Leviticus 16:8-10

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

8 `And Aaron hath given lots over the two goats, one lot for Jehovah, and one lot for a goat of departure;[Strong's #5799 - "azazel - goat of departure; the scapegoat: - scapegoat" from a root, #235 - "go away disappear, fail, gad about, go to and fro, be gone, spent"]

9 and Aaron hath brought near the goat on which the lot for Jehovah hath gone up, and hath made it a sin-offering.

10 `And the goat on which the lot for a goat of departure hath gone up is caused to stand living before Jehovah to make atonement by it, to send it away for a goat of departure into the wilderness.

I'm not one who's convinced the "Book of Enoch" is the "Book of Enoch" written by Enoch 7th from Adam.. But may be one of those spurious 'gospels' put out long (couple of centuries) after the Days of Jesus, perhaps by gnostics..

And I sometimes wonder about Hebrew traditions as years went by, perhaps they absorbed things from nations around them which they added to what was given in the Old Testament..

...perhaps Satan has done that "unforgiveable sin"/ unable to be forgiven sin, which I find myself believing is to habitually harden the heart SO MUCH and so continually, toward God that one HATES Him so much they simply CANNOT repent, thus their sin of doing so cannot be forgiven / is "unforgiveable"....??

So interesting..! I believe they are three.. none human..

Revelation 19:20 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

"20 and the beast (surely? beast rev 13:1, not 13:11) was taken, and with him the false prophet who did the signs before him, in which he led astray those who did receive the mark of the beast, and those who did bow before his image; living they were cast -- the two -- to the lake of the fire, that is burning with brimstone;"

Some believe "the false prophet who did the signs before him" is the one of Rev 13:11, but I think this false prophet is a false teacher/teacher/theory/man's 'science' which turned Christendom on its ear.. and also man's 'science' gives to the Rev 13:11 the capability of 13:13 (fire to earth in sight of man-1945!?) and 18:18 (the 666 machinery)

"thrown alive or living" - Strong's #2198 "zao - living lit or fig"
- I believe the two thrown inot the LOF at Rev 19:20 are two institutions of mankind active at the return of Jesus, when they are thrown into the LOF..

from Revelation 20:7-10 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

"7 And when the thousand years may be finished, the Adversary shall be loosed out of his prison,

8 and he shall go forth to lead the nations astray, that are in the four corners of the earth -- Gog and Magog -- to gather them together to war, of whom the number [is] as the sand of the sea;

9 and they did go up over the breadth of the land, and did surround the camp of the saints, and the beloved city, and there came down fire from God out of the heaven, and devoured them;

10 and the Devil, who is leading them astray, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where [are] the beast and the false prophet, and they shall be tormented day and night -- to the ages of the ages."

Revelation 9:2-4

New King James Version (NKJV)

2 "And he opened the bottomless pit" (how low can one go?? bottomless!) "and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke" {Joels' cloudy/smoky(?) day and the pause of Rev 7:1 (pause of 13:13 which, imo, occurred in 1945) is over and thermo-nuclear warfare has re-occurred, to the degree that the sun is darkened, the moon is red (reflecting fires upon earth) and the atmosphere is "cloudy"/smoky}

3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree" (not thermo-nuclear) "but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads"(rev7:9)..

...7 "And the likenesses of the locusts" {like locusts? swarm?} "[are] like to horses made ready to battle, and upon their heads as crowns like gold, and their faces as faces of men..

..9b and the noise of their wings [is] as the noise of chariots of many horses running to battle;" {loud / "out of the smoke come ?helicopters of marshall law 5 months? described by John as like locusts, who swarm, the whirring overhead blades like crowns, and large glass fronts/faces..?}

Azazel has a connotation of "choosing" in Semitic languages, for those who want to study it deeper.  There could be a solid connection with the choosing of Barabbas over Jesus.  They were both BAR-ABBAS,  "Son of the Father", like the late Dr. Martin has said.

sheila

wow...that's very interesting Leli!!! Thank you!    thinking f ...who do you wish for me to release to

you!   didn't Barabbas lead a rebellion against the Roman authorities??

   welcome..to the forum!!!

leli

Mark 15:7 answers your question, Sheila.  It was Dr. Ernest  L. Martin who explored the Azazel - Jesus - Barabbas scenario.

About the Holy Days of God --- there is more than meets the eye;   some commentators stop at the Last Great Day and some others include the Eight day with the Feast of Tabernacles.  But only a few go as far as the feast of Jubilee that includes the Salvation of all.

sheila

leli..it is my understanding that in every generation..atonement is followedimmediaately

by Jubilee[last trumpet] where every man releases his brother from debt..and all receive

their inheritanceinGod[the landis His] You can proclaaim it..butif youdon't keep it....

God isdispleased.  the Babylon captivity was the result of God's displeasure.....inthis matter

as fr as I cansee........My thinkingonthis is...whenwe accept Christ's atonement in our

generation[lifetime]this brings in aJubilee that we must proclaim[trumpet] and keep.

you must forgive those who tresspass against you[debt] if youwant your Father toforgive you..

this way all debtis released'don't any of you be owing each otherasinglething exceptto love

  oneanother.

therefore I beleive thosecalledof God ineach generation...that keep this Jubilee year... would

leave offthe 'wrking ofthe land'..andthe land wouldnot wax old like a garment[old covenaant]

but would regenerate intoanew eaarthandheaven[inner manrenewed daay by day]

sowing andreaping would cease..and true resting/Sabbath...people eating what growsofitself

all...... and the landwouldnot become desolate I beeleive it is an abomination untothe Lrd

that people proclaim freedom/liberty untothemselves[atonement] and not totheir brothers[all]

in effect..what happens in the scqapegoat/lots..was the rejection of the Christ/liberty/freedom

from debt/Jubilee[which wouldhave brought thm peace]and brought desolation unto Jerusalem

amen, that's veRy interesting about the spirit of Elijah dines on locusts, and then the Lord baptizes with fire and the Holy Spirit.. like a well established route or habit, which I think can be seen a shadow or glimmer of also concerning what occurs after and with the 2nd resurrection of all those not believing and many never having heard..

...amen, the angel with the key to the abyss opens the bottomless pit - the pit (imo) of how low can it all go without God - and out comes smoke, which I believe symbolizes Joel's cloudy day, and out of the smoke of those days, I believe John saw modern day helicopters with shooting ability (fire) coming from their head and tail, coming out of this smoke, which I believe the HS has shown me will be marshall law for five months enforced by helicopters (even tho we now have drones, I still think these are helicopters for the loud noise John wrote they had)..

the beast.. the one of rev 13:1-10 (imo) is a world beast/world body/a global government body of man. This is the one who goes to the LOF at Jesus' return and the false prophet with him, who went before him and did miracles.. who upon earth does miracles? we are stuck in yesteryear, etc and a certain way of thinking so we miss the import of the word "miracles" which I believe in this case represents miracles and wonders of modern man and his adult - I make my own rules for I am the higher power (man's theory the religion of man 'god'/the highest evolved, all things came by accident, no YHWH is man's adult(yes, xxx) fairy tale.

Notice the global harlot which greek word is "pornos" and ("to $ell" the last day$ babble-on {and on} world $y$tem/$iTy, will seduce and mesmerize the world with her charms and the kings of the earth are in bed with her and the merchant$ will weep when she crashes).

The global harlot's charms (im) is of same flood the serpent (guise of the dragon) spews out after the woman (the body/the truth/the faith) after she has migrated two major migrations of the faith (the woman did) beginning at 70a.d. - i.e. the faith mainly migrated to Europe.. (this of course is rev 12)

- after Christ the manchild who will rule all nations with a rod of iron/un-breakable rule and laws of God, after He ascended and sat down on the right hand of God, half the battle was won and thus Michael warred and his angels against the devil and his 1/3 of the angels, and now these rebels are restricted from the heavens, and in great wrath the dragon turns to the woman and persecutes/inquisitions her and the 2nd migration occurs for it says "but she is given the two wings of an eagle that she may fly"/sail,imo) to a new place safe from the "face" of the dragon for 3 and a half (modern, surely?) divisions of time.. at which time (-1620+350) roughly 1970, a proliferation.. a previously hidden social phenomenon exploded (was spewed) upon the scene, in order to wash the faith (the woman) from off the earth. (The false prophet/teaching/belief/theory prepared the way for this too.)

But...! the earth will help the woman and will swallow the flood, =ing Drought, imo, a cross reference with how Jesus said as he was going to be crucified "daughters, don't weep for me, but weep for children's children.. for if they will do this in a green leaf, what (in the world) will they do in a dry one?" (er, try to greatly reduce the population with that miracle and wonder the 666 apparatus. (Luke 28? "what will they do in a dry" leaf)

I don't believe there will be any averting of 'judgment' / the final consequences of all man's doings, not because I don't think our heavenly Father Almighty couldn't do it, because of course He can do anything.. But because when this global system man has devised along with its towers (apart from God, and built on sand) collapse.. in one hour it crashe$ and in one day it falls in a self destructive puff of smoke proving (imo?) for all eternity of the eternities that life cannot be lived apart from God (who is Life itself and also Perfection). That can only ever end in a self destructive puff of smoke, the fate and destiny of every single one of us, if it were not for our Father's intervention/atonement/rescue, etc. All of course in His Perfect Plan.

The 2nd beast of rev chapter 13, verses 11-18 (imo) is a two horned office of man. One which was given the miracle and wonder of a new fire brought down from the sky in the sight of man (1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki, surely?!) which encouraged them to rebuild the world body/beast.. which the end time manifestation of world empire/governance expired when its head didn't sign on after all (the League of Nations was the vision of Woodrow Wilson (the office of rev 13:1-18 which same office carried out 13:13) and eventually someone of this same office (rather at the time or in his past occupied the office, idk) will, imo, step into the prime office of the world body/beast/governance, finally giving to it breath (13:15?) or that is, finally giving to it authority/life. At which point evolves the demand all bend the knee to said world body/beast/image(panel? the beast has a circle of crowns on its head? seats in somewhat of a circle.. in the "last hour" a circle of ten --- ten kings / ten toes.. half iron/western, half clay/not western (won't reaLLy cleave.. won't really have an accord, "league"{strong's for Daniel's accord/covenant of Dn 9:27} of "peace! peace!"

:laughing7: I'm thinking I've babbled on for a bit here (but not as much as I'd like to)..
Good morning, Sheila (and anyone:) and God bless! have a great day..

P.S - rev 17:16 is (imo) socialism (finally) devouring/consuming capitalism which we surely(?) can see shaping up in the world today.. (for some time now)
