Did JOSEPH Henry Thayer of Lexicon fame not believe in ET?

yES, I KNOW ABOUT THOMAS THAYER!

So I was looking up Thayer and Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament when I came across this first. Apparently it is the publishers of Thayers A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: introduction to Thayers lexicon. it reads:


"A word of caution is necessary. Thayer was a Unitarian, and the errors of this sect occasionally come through in the explanatory notes. The reader should be alert for both subtle and blatant denials of such doctrines as the Trinity (Thayer regarded Christ as a mere man and the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force emanating from God), the inherent and total depravity of fallen human nature, THE ETERNAL PUNISHMENT OF THE WICKED, and Biblical inerrancy." When I noticed the reference to his objection to Eternal punishment, I found a writing from Harvard university that was circulated after his death. He signed it! Its is republished in the book:

Thayer's lexicon has all the hell, torture, etc. definitions. But usually also the UR ones.

I think none of that defines a unitarian.


Thayers work is still widely used, but by his own words it's not as accurate as it should be.

The translators of the King James Version (KJV) were unaware of
the differences between Koine Greek and Classical Greek. The relevant
manuscripts had not yet been discovered. As late as 1886 Joseph Henry
Thayer could still list 767 distinctively "New Testament" words with no
known parallels in any known Greek literature. But now, because of
recent discoveries and research over the past 100 years, well over 99%
of the words of the New Contract Writings have been found in other
Greek literature. Moreover, in 1611 the KJV translators followed the
syntax of Classical Greek; but we now know that the Greek of the New
Contract Writings corresponds syntactically to Koine Greek. This makes
a tremendous difference in how many words and phrases are translated.
