Hi everyone. Does anyone know what the Abyss is?  Is it the same as Tartarus?  Also, what does it mean in vs 10 where it repeats 'aions' twice - forever and ever, or ages and ages?  Also, I read somewhere about sinners being cast into the place - Tartarus -  that had originally been prepared for the devil.  This almost seems an afterthought.  Any comments, thanks



Rev 20:1  And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2  And he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,
Rev 20:3  and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years should be finished: after this he must be loosed for a little time.
Rev 20:4  And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as worshipped not the beast, neither his image, and received not the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they lived, and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Rev 20:5  The rest of the dead lived not until the thousand years should be finished. This is the first resurrection.
Rev 20:6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: over these the second death hath no power; but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Rev 20:7  And when the thousand years are finished, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
Rev 20:8  and shall come forth to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
Rev 20:9  And they went up over the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down out of heaven, and devoured them.
Rev 20:10  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where are also the beast and the false prophet; and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

In the OT, olam, which is the word aion was translated from, meant a number of different things depending on the context. A Hebrew literary form, where they doubled the word "olam olam", lent a more emphatic meaning to the word, somethng akin to forever, or really more like "far beyond the horizon" or "beyond knowing".

So if you look at the greek conjunctions between the doubling of the word you can get a sense of the same kinds of contextually (is that a word? :o) specific meaning, like,"unto the age of the ages", or "worlds without end" or "ages upon ages" - all translations yo can find in Young's literal or some of the other major translations.

So.....Revelation  20:10, which is in the KJV forever and ever, is, in the greek, "aionas ton aionian"(ages of ages)  - was "olam olam" in the hebrew or aramaic and meant something like, "for a very long time into the future"- an undefined time set by the purpose of God in establishing it as a part of "the administration of the fulness(completion) of times, the gathering together of all things into one in Christ. Eph 1:9-11

This is the understanding I hav reached anyway after studying the many hundreds of uses of olam and the doubling of Hebrew words for emphasis- which happens frequently with "olam" and " sheol" and a number of other Hebrew words.

Tartarus, which occurs only in 2 Peter 2:4 is therefore hard to place conclusively, but in Greek mythology it was a place where the Titans of Greek Mythology, which may be an echoe(as many myths are) of the sons of god in Genesis six, or the angels of Jude 6, who were bound in "aidos" chains awaitng judgment for leaving their proper estate( who may also hav been the origin of the Titan myth and may also be the sons of god of Genesis 6. All that is highly speculative on my part, and I do not believe any of the detailed histories proposed around those verses, they are seen through a glass darkly, for they are "olam"- too far over the horizon past" to see clearly. :o)

 :thumbsup:   I see it related to the binding and loosing.....what you bind in the earth is bound in the heavens

   the binding of satan/adversary in the abyss...results in the first resurrection...truth without deceptin

  authority to trample under your feet,and handle serpents....The loosing of in the erth from the abyss

results in deception to go forth and fight against the 'camp' of the Holy city in the earth..until...God

delivers from the deceiver/adversary that goes forth from the 'bottomless"


      simply put.....the bottmless..and those in it...is the plumbless depths of decetpion depravity

   when the deceiver gooes forth...planting tares[lies/errors/deception]  then harvest seperation

  binding[tares] and burning[fire come down from heaven] work of Jesus must occurr 

Secound resurrection[seperation of righteous/ wicked]

   first resurrection/no lie in their mouths/no deception..rule over/authority over/overcomer in Christ.

.secound resurrection=wheat/tare combination

  that must be seperated...that wheat become as first/better resurrection[Holy....no mixture]that he may

enter the Holy city.  Thus let he who is filthy continue to be filthy..let he who is holy continue..as  the

Lord will seperate and refine the people..bring that which is refined[wheat] into the brn of heaven/Holy city

  and leave outside that which is not.....the TOL only has GOOD/GOD IN IT...can you see that in the midst

of His Garden..it sprouts and comes up and splits the tree of good and evil..and the evil branch[fork]

perishes..and what is of God/good in it...lives...the cloven[forked] tongues of fire..of His Holy spirit

seperates the good/evil.


    I just see a picture of the tol growing to such an extent and size that it destroys/splits the

TOKOGAE in two.   Eaat fruit from that TOL nd the seed of it will grow and seperate your inward parts too.

the old man/sin/evil branch will perish..and the new man will be renewed day by day.


   can you see men as trees walking about? Rev 22;2  on each side of the river stood the tol,bearing

twelve crops of fruit,yeilding it's fruit every month,And the leaves of the tree are for the healing

of the naations
