What does book burning and shutting down the voice of thought have in common?

depends on what you're talking about - setting, context, situational purpose, and understood/accepted agreements, etc.

as an example - if I personally own a book, I wouldn't expect anyone to burn it.   On the other hand if someone gave me a book, or even insisted I take it, and it was full of pornography, or a list of satanic incantations to dredge up evil spirits, I'd likely throw them away/burn them.   

As far as speech/thought;  If I was in a meeting and sharing something that was appropriate for the setting, edifying, useful, within the scope and purpose of the meeting, etc., I wouldn't want someone to just summarily for no good reason shut me up.   Again, on the other hand, on a forum such as this one that's "owned" by someone else and has a specific purpose/goal/mission and expectations, when anyone posts it carries with it a statement of agreement to abide by those expectations.    In that situation, things may occur within those established guidelines and agreements that might be different than having to do with one's own "space" and personal property.     

Or another example - in a gathering of the ecclesia, or a "church service", is there an expectation of things being done decently and in order, or just have a free-for-all?  Everyone standing up on their seats yelling out their own beliefs and views, drowning each other out - maybe even if one guy wants to stand and chant Hare Krishna mantras over and over for an hour or two.  I'd think the fellow would be told to be quiet, maybe prayed for/over, and at some point removed from the assembly if he didn't stop.

So again, I'd say it depends on the situation.  Maybe you have some other scenario in mind that's different than the above though...

Micah, If you want to be heard, you may write your own book and/or start your own website or shout it from a streetcorner. Then you may say anything you want and adddress any topic of your choosing. Stuff in this forum is subject to the purpose of the forum and straying off on a tangent is not OK or productive. A topic is locked when nothing of value has been added.
You are free to speak as you choose but not in this or any other forum if it isn't good, kind, helpful or necessary. For that, you have the freedom to start your own forum With your own forum, see what happens when anybody can come in and have the freedom to say whatever they want  :Peace2:.

well censorship is what comes to my mind.  roo t word 'one who judges'  we all do this..weigh in the balance what

is said.Discernment is wht is needed.  For instance I value some of the things written in the Lost books...Enoch in

particular...as having 'worthiness"  of consideration..but due to 'some' not having this same mindset..have had

to use another approach to get my 'thoughts' out there...the book of Jude..for example.

      Perhaps..there is another approach that can be used to express what 'thoughts' anyone wants

  to be heard.?  So as not to offend nor stumble nor 'wreck" the forum.   Sometimes..it's just the timing...

  people being 'ready' to listen  If brothers are offended..they are not usually ready to listen........


   we don't want to be just a 'clanging cymbol" or aa noise-maker..that irritates.  and we can do just that

  if we don't consider the sensibilities of our brother's.

Yes, it is censorship and discernment is used to lock a topic. It isn't done willy nilly or to hurt anyone. We lock topics that need to be locked. Many should have been locked way before they were due to leeway being given.

Good points both ded and sheila.   There has been private conversation about this thread and related issue(s).  Its purpose has hopefully been resolved.  Since it mainly has to do with moderation and already-spelled-out forum guidelines and expectations, including Gary's main purpose for the forum [UR, not just a general "whatever topic comes to mind explored to the ends of the earth" forum), although I "hate" to do it, this one will be locked too.   :bsad:
