Jeremiah 3:8  God divorced Israel.
Romans 11:1-5 God didn't divorce His people.
Did God divorce the nation Israel but not the people itself?

Dear Rabbi,

How do you explain the divorce in Jeremiah? How do you explain that the Jewish people are divorced from God by His own word? How do we as Jews get back to God under the Law which prohibits us from coming back? I am not saying that we are no longer God's Chosen – I am saying that for us to be reconciled to God, it cannot happen under the Law. Would God have to bring a "new covenant" in to bring us back to Him? You may post this question.

like that Rose..and then when you consider that Jesus said 'Moses wrote you to divorce becoz your hearts are

hard" it fits the unforgiving nature of men....as far below the Loving nature of God"

I have said this before, but it bears repeating -

Yes, God divorced Israel.
Yes, He kicked her out of the house/land of Canaan.
Yes, the bill of divorce is recorded in Scripture.
Yes, Israel married herself to other husbands, the pagan gods.
Yes, God, by His own Law, cannot take her back again.

Yet - God still loved and longed for Israel, and kept her in His watchcare. 

What was He to do?

The solution was for Him to die in the person of Jesus the Christ.  Preachers preach endlessly about how Jesus died for your sins, and He did, but a huge reason for Him to die was to annul the divorce situation, and enable God to remarry Israel - to take His bride again.  It is the greatest love story in history or in the cosmos.  It's hard to think about it and keep a dry eye...
