The Lord was pleased?

I heard someone quoting this verse the other day:

Isaiah 53:10 But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.

My question is, how come the Lord was PLEASED to crush Christ on the cross?  I thought God was a God a love, not one of crushing and hurting.  I find this verse very confusing.

God is pleased to crush himself for our benefit.

When will people get it through their heads how much they are loved by him?

Hi Syndicated!  Nice to see you!

Hi Syndicated,

The way I see this is, God knows the outcome for all things and he knows that the suffering in this life is but for a very short time compared to his overall plan. All the suffering in this lifetime will be forgotten but the things we are learning from it all will never die. If Jesus hadn't died he wouldn't have a name above all names.  He wouldn't be our brother and comforter. He couldn't be our mediator. Because he was human and suffered he understands what we are going through. Plus, in the end we all will have a blessing that cannot be compared to all the bad associated with this physical life.  This life is just a learning experience.
