Survey help...please?

I am writing a statistical analysis paper for math class. I am debating between topics that relate to age, sleep patterns, and voting.  And while I haven't reached my decision I need to go ahead and start my surveying. This is a simple paper so names nor the reason behind a person's answer will be stated.

The info I need is:
1. Your age
2. The time you typically go to bed
3. Do you plan on voting in the upcoming election

Your responses are greatly (extremely greatly) appreciated.

My daughter, Sarah, says "Thanks for your input!".....

Here are her results.  I've only included the conclusive summary results.... and the end of her paper, which had me laughing heartily. I could feel her rage growing as I neared her report's final destination. You should have seen her bloodshot eyes and head spinning by the end of this statistical nightmare!!   :laughing7: She will definitely not pursue statistics as a career.   :winkgrin:

btw: She decided to just compare ages and bedtimes and left out the voting aspect.


What then were the findings of my research?  The average time (mean) my sample goes to bed is 1:00 AM.  This is out of group whose average age is 30.2 years old.  The most "popular" (mode) time people go to bed is 12:00 AM, while the mode for age is both 17 and 19 years old.  The median age is 40 years.  I am not sure what is the best way to find the median for the bedtime, so I excluded that from my study.  Because my times begin at 5:00 PM and end at 5:00 AM and my range is greater than zero, I used both military time, and counted the time difference from 5:00 in the evening to 5:00 in the morning which is 12 hours.  The oldest person I got a bedtime from is 66 and the youngest is 14 which makes the age range 52 years.

I learned many things from my study, probably the greatest being that compiling numbers and statistics is a huge amount of work.  As far as the correlation between ages and bedtimes, I found that regardless of age many people seem to go to bed around the same time.  However, the latest bedtimes seem to apply to people who are in their early to mid-twenties.  The earliest bedtimes appear to apply to people who are in their late forties to early sixties.

My study of course is no where close to being error proof or perfect.  Obviously my sample number of people is small compared to the American population (in the age ranges of 14-66) as a whole.  There is also the hurdle of people estimating the time they do go to bed, along with my struggle of how to include people who did not give an "exact" hour.  To further the source of error is the fact that all the math is being done by one person, who has been looking at the numbers for a quite a while, and who does not have the energy to recheck every calculation. 

These probably are not all the sources for error either, this is why it is a good thing that my study is a learning experience and not something with higher stakes relying on it.  However, after doing this study I am sure I will not take statistics at face value.
