Bible Versions - Recommendations?

Does anyone know of specific versions of the Bible that provide more accurate translations of words that are identified as hell in the KJV and other popular versions?  It's getting time to buy a new Bible and I'd like to get the most accurate translation possible.

YLT - Youngs Literal translation --> printed format and free electronic versions. OT+NT
TCB - The Christian Bible --> printed format only. NT only
LXX Brenton. - English translation of the the Greek OT translated 300-200 BC  -> Free electronic versions.
EBR - Rotherham Enhanced Bible  --> Electronic and printed copies. OT+NT

Very literal version in software and pdf format. Very nice for study but very hard to read.

TCB is a very good translation (imo) that uses modern (1995) English.

Personally I use all of the above version plus KJV+TVM.
Imo some depth has gone lost in all translations. Then it's useful to be able to look up the original meanings in a electronic version of Strong/Thayer. KJV is one of the very few translations that has links to a lexicon.

It's worth reading reviews of these versions - I read a lot about them on Amazon and in other places before I made my decision, and did some reading of the Young's Literal online as well. I've just bought myself a Rotherham's Emphasized version - I never managed to find it online - and am working my way through the very comprehensive introduction. I think it's going to be a brilliant study Bible and is intended as such - the translator states that his intention was to produce a Companion Version - and I believe many people here use it (and other literal translations) as their main reading Bible. I hope my understanding grows to that level. I love the language of it, although at present I sometimes have to refer to other versions for clarification of meaning. (My main reading Bible at present is the Amplified - not because it renders the "hell" and "ages" words as we would like but because it expands on the meaning of certain words. I've been an NIV reader for the whole of my Christian life and feel the urgent need to get away from it, at least for a time.)

On a purely practical note, these are BIG Bibles. My Rotherham's wouldn't fit into any Bible case I've ever seen (it measures 24.5cm length X 17cm width X 7cm depth) and while I've never seen a Young's in the flesh (as it were - maybe I mean "in the paper"  :laughing7: ) I gather it's even bigger. Fine to keep on a table for study; not so easy if you want to carry it to a Bible study... invest in a small suitcase on wheels maybe...  :grin:

Lots of downloads are legal. If it is about virusses or trojans; more PCs get infected by visiting websites than installing software.

Thanks for those links, WhiteWings. The first one gives an idea of the translation, but does not have the text markers to indicate various phrasings and emphases - which are an integral part of that version, if I understand the Introduction correctly.

I can't get the last link to give me a readable page, no matter how much I enlarge it. No matter to me, as I have the printed text.

Mmm, I like the way it integrates comments with the text.
It's not really a reading Bible. If you want to read just take a KJV because Bullinger is KJV.
If you want to study using KJV text then Bullinger is  a good starting point.

There are various good translations. It's a bit personal what reads best for you. I would suggest to read a chapter of each translation. With so many online versions that's easy to do.
I think either YLT and Rotherham are a good choice.
If you plan to buy a printed copy I suggest you read reviews on Amazon. YLT reviews often are bad concerning the printing quality. Many find the print to small.

TCB was written 1995 (NT only)

REB uses much moderner English.

Something of both, though I have to confess my study is a bit disorganised and haphazard.  :mblush: I read the Youngs online for a while before I decided to go for a hard copy of the Rotherham's. I love language and words but I found the Youngs quite hard to understand; for me the Rotherham's is a bit more accessible.

I spend all my working day at a computer screen and like a printed page to read from as a change.  :winkgrin:

I'd have been a bit more careful about my choice of board name if I'd known you were going to analyse it so thoroughly.  :grin: I chose it simply because it's a pretty form of my real life name - I resolved never to use my real name on message boards after I was stalked on one. Nothing sinister, just a friend who found it funny, but it made me feel pretty uncomfortable.  :mshock:
