Is claiming "Assurance" really necessary?

1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

1 John 5:13

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

I know that we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling,

we must press on towards the upward goal that is Christ...

And we must constantly renew our minds with the Holy Spirit's guidance...

The thing is - is claiming the "assurance" of salvation (that many Protestants and Fundamentalists hold on to so dearly)... or should we just stick to NOT judging things before the present time and just know that all of us will give to himself an account to God?

While Scripture tells us that our inheritance is guaranteed by our faith in Christ and His seal of the Spirit in us - out of humility would it be all right to NOT think about assurance but just keep on abiding as best we can and renewing our faith in Him?

Gary, in his poem WHAT THE HELL IS HELL wrote

"Punish us the Father will... but since He is not vindictive, mercy will triumph over judgment."

Should we always be mindful of whether we indeed will rise immediately to glory and life OR is it ok to simply let go of those notions and just know that God will do what is best and necessary when we all stand before the judgment seat of Christ?

What are your thoughts on holding on to this "assurance" of salvation mindset, now that we believe in UR?

(But with UR, I would mean "assurance" as in the assurance of rising to life and sharing in Christ's glory immediately VS. still being subject to judgment and correction).

I recently found this quote somewhere.
"Salvation is guaranteed. Being part of the Kingdom is not."

I think the author of that quote is right.
So I don't understand "we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling," ==> Most don't so most are doomed?
Jesus is the Saviour of all. Our works (work out salvation) have no effect on that.  ==> Gift
The only thing one can earn is a spot in 1000-year Kingdom.

That's how I understand it.

I suppose so!! I told my other christian friend that "It's only a question if you'll be joining in the ressurection with the firstfruits, or be a part of the firstfruits."

Here's something I found while reading Peter... while those in Christ Jesus will not experience judgment (as in judgment to be cast off and punished)... we are to experience those chastening and trials TODAY... someone else here also said that today, we are called to dwell in the fire, separation of wheat from the chaff.

1 Peter 4:12-14 (Young's Literal Translation)

12Beloved, think it not strange at the fiery suffering among you that is coming to try you, as if a strange thing were happening to you,

13but, according as ye have fellowship with the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice ye, that also in the revelation of his glory ye may rejoice -- exulting;

14if ye be reproached in the name of Christ -- happy [are ye], because the Spirit of glory and of God upon you doth rest; in regard, indeed, to them, he is evil-spoken of, and in regard to you, he is glorified;

There isn't any fear and trembling before God.  Why would we do this?  Sounds like another mind control kind of thing, like when I was first introduced to mainstream Christianity, people loved to ask me if I was "saved."  I think it turned them on to think they might have the power to announce me "saved" to the congregation.  But fear God?  Never.
