MAL 4?

Someone has been asking me about MALACHI 4 and im stumped as how to answer.

Malachi 4

1For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.


They believe that this passage means annihilation.

The best i could come up with with my limited knowledge on this passage was this

We have to bear in mind the bible uses figurative speech, and hyperbole to get a point across for example Sodom's fiery judgment was said to be "eternal" (Jude 7), it sounded pretty clear that God was finished with that place, yet Sodom was restored. (Ezek. 16:53-55). All Mal 4 says to me is that God is going to destroy every root and branch of sin and evil until is is no more, otherwise how can God be savior of all? How can all be made alive in Christ?

Please respond if anyone can help us out here?

It does.
Just not as the carnal mind thinks.

The root is gone as is the branch, ahhh, but the tree remains.

Roots (buried desires not of God) are the deep things that nourish the branch which bears the fruit.

I just had a response back from the guy i was talking too about mal 4

you know the more i read this it does not read like the lake of fire and the Day of Judgement the reason is as we see in chapter 3 verse 17-18 on that same day he spares the righteous but there is still wicked people it says so you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked between the ones that serve God and one who does not serve Him.Chapter 4 verse 5-6 before this day takes place God will send Elijah and He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the children's heart to their fathers, then it is when God burns all the evil people the great and terrible day of the Lord is not the day of judgment the second death. it is the great tribulation, it says we will trample down the wicked and they shall be ashes under our feet. this is why it is not the lake of fire, the saved people have nothing to do with gathering and cutting to piece and then putting them in the lake of fire. but in this case the wicked become ashes on the ground we walk on and not in the lake of fire. so i think the Holy Spirit is letting me see what you are say to a point. I still have to see about mat. 24: 51
