There's nothing wrong with watching Sci-fi. No different than any other fiction.
How much(if any) fiction should we as christians read or watch? :dontknow:

Hehe Sheila I LOVE The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Avatar. Have you seen any of those? They also made a movie of The Hobbit which was also really good! I love JRR Tolkien's stuff!

I am a fan of Tolkeen.  I've read everything he's written for the Lord of the Rings world.  Well I skipped over the poem that he wrote that was going to be the original story.  He made up the elvish language, then decided to write a poem in the style of Beowolf, then turned it into an entire world.  I read all the Narnia books too as a kid.

Loved all the movies too.

Tolkien drew a lot of ideas for Lord of the Rings from the Kalevala, the national epic poem of Finland.  It was only written down in the 19th century, but its oral roots seem to very, very ancient.  It's fairly universal for nations, even small ones, to have national epics.  In one instance that I read about somewhere, a reciter of lore in some obscure corner of Eurasia offered to recite either the long or the short version of some epic.  His prospective hearers inquired, and found out that the long version would have taken weeks to recite, and it was all in the fellow's head.

If you loved those, you might be interested in reading some of Tolkien's non fiction.  I first encountered him through his work as an Anglo-Saxon scholar (not a really old guy with a horned helmet and a beard, but a scholar of Anglo-Saxon).  Between Tolkien's work on A-S and C.S.Lewis's work in Mediaeval Lit, English has truly been blessed.

Some time in the fairly recent past, I stated somewhere that there are three main pillars of the English language:

The KJV

Shakespeare

Tolkien

I'm sure some will disagree.  :dunno2:

When I was little I had to go to bed about 8 pm.  In the summertime it was still light out for a very long time.  I could hear some of the neighbor kids still playing outside.  I didn't like going to bed so early.  Then too, I would be paralyzed with fear on into the dark night.  In order to not draw attention, I would move so incrementally slow it would take an incredibly long time to position myself just right for a lunge for the light on the bedside table to turn it on in the fastest possible way.  There was something under my bed.  I didn't know what it was; but, it intended to utterly destroy me in the worst way possible.  To get the light on was one way of defeating it, of dispelling my fear and not being attacked.

Eventually I got the idea that "The Boogey Man" must be what was under my bed.  I didn't know anything about him except the name.  I thought if I moved slow enough to where I could drop a boogie over the side of the bed and, though he'd get only a little of me, it would satisfy him enough to relieve his need to eat me up.  I realized there were some flaws in this thinking; but, I just forced myself to accept it as workable.  After feeding the thing under my bed I forced the release from fear by turning over in bed in a casual way and by releasing a theatrical sigh or loudly clearing my throat as if I knew of nothing wrong.

My maternal grandfather, when he was at our house, did get rid of it for me, for at least a few days at a time.  Why he thought of checking up on me and asking me how I was doing, I just think it was the Lord that prompted him.  He'd take the broom and sweep the scary thing out from under the bed and sweep it out of the closet too, another place it would lurk.  Then he would pray with me.  It really worked, at least for a few days.  Then it had to be done all over again.

I don't know why we never thought of demons of fear, or, why the idea I could pray never came to me.  While you usually won't get your own way, it is amazing what praying to Jesus can do.  Since then I've also learned the apostle Paul had things like this and otherwise that he could send to bad people so they would change their minds and follow the way of the Lord.

I would say

Geoffrey Chaucer,
The KJV,
and
William Shakespeare (or Francis Bacon, if you side with that argument)

Oh reF! Hahahahahaha that was adorable. (I laughed so hard when I read about you feeding it the boogie hahahahaha!)

I wish I had someone to do that for me as a child. When I was a young teen my bedroom was in the basement (I was the only one down there. It was a finished basement apart from the laundry room but still creeped me out.) I used to wait til I knew everyone else was in bed and then run as fast as I could (so that whatever bad things were lurking in the basement couldn't catch me) up the stairs and creep into my little brother's room and sleep there until early morning when I would (hopefully) wake up earlier than everyone else and sneak back down into my own room so that nobody knew I was a scaredy cat LOL. (My brother had two beds in his room. Often his spare bed would be filled with toys so I ended up sleeping on the carpeted floor. It was fine with me, better than sleeping in the creepy basement LOL.)

That fear demon had ahold of me til I came to the Lord at 16/17. After that it still gave me trouble at times but through prayer He has been able to overcome it in me for the most part. Horrible things, they are.

Thanks for sharing that, reformer, we all have notions when we are children which seem quaint to us when we grow up.  In my case, I "came to realize" that doctors recruited their nurses from their female patients.  I would look at a nurse and wonder where the doctor got her.  When my mom went to a doctor's appointment, I was always worried that the doctor would turn her into a nurse, ship her off somewhere, and I'd never see her again.

when I was little...I was told a pet that died and was buried out behind the shed,at the edge of the alley

had gone to heaven.  About 2 days went by...and an idea occurred to me :sigh: to go and see if it had

'gone to heaven" yet.  Well...I began digging....and after awhile discovered it in a horrible state

every few days after that,I would go and check.  until it was 'gone"  I never told anyone..... :Chinscratch:

However..for years after that..if someone mentioned 'going to heaven' to me..about anything that had

died...it was Not much comfort...and resulted in such a greiving that I would literally start running a fever

from dehydration from shedding so many tears. mY gRANDMOTHER SAID...'CHILD YOUR SUCH A GREIVER"

Needless to say..DEATH WAS MY ENEMY FROM THEN ON. :Chinscratch:

I'm not sure when I finally realized  that our life does not come from the flesh...but that the flesh appears to live

because the spirit of life is in it..........but that was a very good revelation for me..in particular
