Title: Another Poem of Mine
Post by: Lazarus Short on January 13, 2013, 03:38:35 AM
A Song of Descents

I thought I was going somewhere,
but here I am, redflagged, God's hand on me.
My future shimmered, but now fades –
a heat wave on a summer highway
as day ends and  seasons turn.
My past returns, a winter houseguest;
I'm in for room wandering, and slow tears.
Spring comes, but I wish the brown fields back.

I thought I was flying,
but I'm here in woods, mired in mud,
map in hand, but lost anyway.
I want to be far away – can I go?
My heart is:  yes!  Yes!  My spirit, no.
until they lie down together at evening.
But next morning, the heart cajoles again.

I thought someone was with me,
but I'm alone, and facedown on the carpet,
ticking off days & weeks of two lives severed.
I see God's hand in decisions, divisions,
and the end of my own ways – I give them up.
Between sobs, I find words to pray with.
I'm down, but He's down here with me.

Note:  Rock bottom, mud bottom, carpet bottom.  I found the Songs of Ascent in the Psalms, and came up with the idea of a Song of Descent.  It fit.  DD 11-22-2010

Lazarus, this poem reminds me of a famous painting (which I will not name) expressing in beautiful colors (meaningful words) and combinations thereof, so many of my own experiences, both in thought and in feelings ...  I will be printing it and looking at it again and again.  my bottom line is your last line ...He's down here with me.

...here's my 'descent' poem,Laz wrote it in Nov 1999

       IN THE VALLEY

As I walk through the darkness,I tread with fear and pain

And with outstretched arms to find my way,I stumble fall again

I lay my hands upon a man..and endeavour him to help

he pulls himself from my embrace....I pray for light of day.

  Trapped in darkness,racked with pain,  I see a ray of hope;

I entreat  my God for help and strength..as I crawl and grope.

I come upon another..he stays with me awhile...

then leaves me in the darkness..as I can taste the bile.

Upon cold earth I lay my head..and pray to God above....

  with entreating tears I cry...deliver!..compassion...Love!

In the darkness many pass,my cries to them unheard.....

and those that hear..chastise my cries..with a condemning word..

In the stillness of the dark, I hear God's whispered word......

" dawn will break upon your face ...your prayers have been heard"

Now my spirit is at rest..and quietness falls upon me.....

For as dawn breaks..upon my ravaged soul.....

...with the light of day...I see.....
