Title: Luke 13:23-30
Post by: jesushandsarekindhands on October 11, 2009, 11:28:37 PM
Im having trouble understanding -

A man asks Jesus "Lord are only a few people going to be saved?"
Jesus responds by saying -
Luke 13:23-30 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is
the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go
in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way
which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

And also -

Acts 16:30-31.
30 And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to
be saved?" What was the answer? 31They said, "Believe on
the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your
household."

You AND your household?
What does this mean?  So If I believe then my whole household (family?) Is saved?

Can anyone shed some light on these passages?

Thank you in advance.

  Hi Marc ,
I always thought it was strange Jesus said you are a ''city'' set on a hill that cannot be hid

a city ?  thats alot  ''within''  us huh?
and the Kingdom of God is growing within you  too !! :cloud9:
I also  have considered that  Jesus told that a man   He would send a divison  of 5 within one house

here it is     in  luke 12

  Christ Divides Men
49"I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled!
50"But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

51"Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division;

52for from now on five members in one household  will be divided, three against two and two against three.

53"They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

54And He was also saying to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it turns out.

55"And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, 'It will be a hot day,' and it turns out that way.

56"You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?

57"And why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right?

So for me it is all the  scattered thoughts and  beliefs  I hold and have hung on too   that the Lord divides and seperates
within me  ,
and yes I am not so spiritual that I dont think it cannot  be  with my family in my literal house   that we  are split on  different views  and standards

for many interpretations  on many levels of understanding the scriptures will come and go  ,to us and  by us bro ..

when it sits right and settles in  your heart / mind  and the Lord s peace comes you will know the Holy Sprit has given you   something you  never had before  , a peace that surpasses all understanding ...

I personally take them more inwards  now than outwardly
though I can definatly can see both more  now than ever before

blessings in Jesus name    rose  :HeartThrob:

Thank you for your answer Rose, it was different from what I expected, but very useful nonetheless.
I do scrutinize the scriptures quite a lot and like to hear varying opinions, because I tend not to lean on my own understanding as the Bible commands.  I guess I just don't want to err, but to have things clear in my mind so that I can know that when I tell others about God I won't be making things up...As the church has been doing for about 1500 years lol.

Amen  to that Bro Marc ! ,
I dont want to be making it up as I go either ..  :mblush:
I do Know Jesus Come to change our minds / hearts
on many matters concrening the  Father  and show us what   the truth is in Love
How can we show love  when we dont know what love is ?

I know that forgiveness is key in getting understanding
we have to forgive ourselves  before we can  even begin to forgive others  of offence

to me that narrow gate that leads to Life  is the healing that  makes us whole /complete in Christ
very few find this in this life bro .. it seems to come and go

but for it to stay and intensify   within us , is   a great work of Gods /love /Spirit

I have went already   down the  broad path that led to destruction

self loathing   hatered  , bitterness  , gall , judging  harshly

and it was my own personal hell /death /grave

know one knew that pain but the Lord  and He come and rescued me out of the pit .. i saw  the error of my ways  and  begged for forgiveness  and
now find it easy to forgive others ,   for the Lord to difuse the anger in me was short of a miracle  / act/action  of God .. having such mercy ..  now I love mercy  and now when I get angry I think about God , never done that before , that seems to  nip it in the bud !  :icon_flower:

you hang in there bro Marc ,  I see you doing much better already !  :cloud9:

God bless and love you  :HeartThrob:  rose

Near the end of this Flash Movie is a glimpse to explain "a city set on a hill cannot be hidden".

I always think of two sets of words that put this in perspective............

And a man's foes shall be they of his own  household .mt10.36

and

For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,  22  covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness:  23  all these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man.mk7.21

It is from within my own household that my enemies reside. I too am not so spiritually minded that I don't see this truth in the physical realm sometimes but I see it as always true in the spiritual realm. Jesus said His words are spirit!

:cloud9: That's very true CP........I see it as both, too. EVERYTHING in the whole book is both spiritual, and literal (literal in the sense of, that it did happen).

And Marc; as to the first part of what you asked about with the narrow gate.......it can be spiritually understood as well with the fact the 3 openings of the Tabernacle compartments got narrower and narrower.

Also, with the eye of the needle gate reference. There actually was a gate like that. They had to DISCARD EVERYTHING off the camel and then the camel had to get on it's knees to pass thru the gate. The word camel has an association with the Hebrew letter 'gimel', which is as a SERVANT, bowed. Blessings....

Thanks for your answers everyone.

So when Jesus says this -

Luke 13:23-30 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is
the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go
in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way
which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Is he talking about life now?

From what Jesus says here it does sound like only a few will be saved!  Its still causing me problems this passage lol.

:cloud9: If you want to understand better my post about the gate, it might help you find the sticky about the Tabernacle and read that thread. It has information concerning the 3 compartments of the Tabernacle. God speaks a lot of scriptures that have 3 parts to them, and the one about the gates is a reference to one the Tabernacle compartments. Blessings....
