Let's assume it is....

Jonah 1
14 So the men cried to the Lord, "Lord, please don't say we are guilty of killing an innocent man. Please don't make us die for killing him. We know you are the Lord, and you will do whatever you want."

15 So the men threw Jonah into the sea. The storm stopped, and the sea became calm. 16 When the men saw this, they began to fear and respect the Lord. They offered a sacrifice and made special promises to the Lord.

17 When Jonah fell into the sea, the Lord chose a very big fish to swallow Jonah. He was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah is found guilty and cast into hell.
For 3 days...

So if it describes hell, it's an UR hell. Or if you wish the RCC purgatory type.

The second chapter of Jonah is amusing in the KJV - the translators overreach themselves, trying to make the belly of the fish, containing Jonah, into Hell.  The center-column reference in my KJV footnotes "hell" here as "sheol." 

Here is one place where "Hell" is surely cold. :laughing7: No flames for Jonah!

Jonah prayed to God in hell.
Jonah was physically alive in  hell.
Jonah was in the belly of hell.
Jonah was vomited out of hell.

Yeh, phoney-baloney hell.  :winkgrin:

 :2c: symbol of the grave........the word of God given unto Jonah..was unto  life.... and repentance unto  life for Nineveh. His lack of obedience unto that word/commandment unto life...was death.

swallowed up of the grave/death..until the fish vomited him out on dry land.

  the people inhabiting the wilderness  [Job 41'1  Leviathan and the fish-hook]  Jonah ate the head[mind] of leviathan..in disobedience to God's command.....and Leviathan ate him..swallowed

  him up......a mutual swallowing/ vomiting  up of both Jonah and Levithan took place...... both.the earth and the sea must give up their dead.......[Jonah from the sea..and Nineveh the

earth/beasts......in this case.]  Even those who found themselves amongst the wicked like the troubled sea..were saved from ship-wreck of their faith when dead/disobedient prophets were cast into

the sea...and the sea become still.  Mark 4;39  Jesus calms the sea....the Word of God come in flesh.  Matt 3;2

Good one Lazarus! :-)  And I was brought up in my local church, taught that the one and only true bible and perfectly translated bible, was the King James Version.  But the folks who taught me to falsely believe that, they never explained or even talked about how/why the KJV said Jonah was in hell, when in fact and as you point out, he was really in the belly of a large fish!

Matt 12;39-41 " But He answered them,
                                                    ' An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except
                                                      the sign of Jonah the prophet. For just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three

Jonah in the belly of the whale is the story of a man coming to terms with God's purpose. Notice....Why was Jonah in the belly of the whale? Because God told Him to warn the Ninevites that if they didnt repent God would destroy them and Jonah didnt want to. Why? Because Jonah wanted the Ninevites to die. They were the enemies of Israel.

God on the other hand, counseled Jonah concerning mercy, and it was for mercies sake the whole story occurs. The Ninevites repent. God has mercy, and Jonah gets angry about it.

I personally believe this is an excellent picture of those who get angry when we say that people will not be punished forever. Even as God dealt with Jonah in the whales belly He will deal with rebellious sinners as they stand before Him. He is the fire and His love will burn through their sins and secrets and they will repent, even as the Ninevites did.

Jesus said to the Pharisees, "These harlots and publicans will enter the kingdom of heaven before you".... and why?  Because they know they are sinners and when they see His love for them they will bow their knees and confess with joy to the glory of God the Father- "Jesus Christ is Lord!"

The Pharisees on the other hand, some of them will weep and wail and gnash their teeth in anger as the fire exposes their lack of mercy, justice and compassion. It will take a little while longer for the fire to burn through the veils of self-righteousness and hate they hid beneath the filthy rags of their own righteousness, but eventually they to will rejoice, humbled and free from bondage and embrace the sinners that entered before them, crying out with new found joy, "Jesus Christ is Lord!"
