Oh my gosh - this "picture of Jesus" is hideous!

Do you suppose this is the IMAGE that we should seek to be conformed to?  I sure hope not.

I know we shall not judge according to appearance, but that woman in this link does not look that pious:

she teaching about hell rather appears as irony then to be taken serious

These are the kind of sites I avoid like the plague now, as they are successful in their fear-mongering

They are the type of sites that bring on panic attacks :mshock: :dontknow:

All dark and gloomy. Quite fitting for their twisted and perverted doctrine.

I'm sorry, Shadow.  I did not realize that people here were vulnerable to being terrified by these sites.  I should have considered that before posting.  I posted it because I think these type of "ministries" need to be confronted with prayer in the Spirit.

There was a time when a web site like this would also have terrified me because I did used to believe their sick message.

Bless you -
Anne

I had the exact same thought!  She looks atypical for that kind of religion (if you know what I mean).   :happy3:

I don't know, I'm not familiar with THE John Piper as a known entity.   :icon_joker:  Or else, indeed!  I watched the video again and it actually made me laugh in between my grimacing.  They got people to ACT out the parts of holding a conversation with God on his throne, begging for mercy and finding NO MERCY.   It's so awful.  I used to have those kind of scenes run through my mind when I was just a very little girl, picturing my bad self begging God for another chance.  It was because of the teaching I heard in my youth and my experience of losing a parent to death at a very young age.  I was honest enough to know that I could not always do what is right, and frightened enough to believe that THAT would keep me from receiving God's grace.   My father image was not well formed at all so I just figured all Fathers were stern taskmasters.  I just believed what I was taught.  That's the way children are.

Oh boy.  Whenever I'm presented with attempts to convert others through fear, I always quote the same verse every time:

"The one who fears is not made perfect in love." (1 John 4:18)

If something makes you afraid, then it cannot bring you to love God, plain and simple.  And that is the fundamental problem with the doctrine of eternal torment, really: it invites people to believe not because they love God, but rather because they are afraid of burning forever.

Yet, we also know that "whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love" (1 John 4:8).  It'd almost be humorous if it weren't so tragic - there are all these preachers telling us all about God, and yet the holy text they use to scare people says plain as day that they do not even know God.  It's really the ultimate case of the blind leading the blind, so to speak.  I once had a person ask me, in response to my talking about universal reconciliation, what the point of believing was if it was not necessary to save oneself from hell.  I could not put my sadness in words in response to this query - because that's really what it is for so many people: "who cares about love; I just want mine".  I don't say this to insult or to condemn these people, but rather to express sympathy, because it's in precisely this way that fear makes one retreat to what is comfortable, and makes impossible true, unconditional love of the sort that all are instructed to hold for others.

I remember hearing a quote from Mahatma Gandhi that went something like, "I like your Christ.  Your Christians, not so much."  I am forced to admit that I often feel rather sympathetic to that view - which is why I make a point of it to try and offset that impression at least a little bit when around others.  I suppose no one ever said being a Christian would be easy...

I didn't look around the site all that much.  I suppose I wasn't affected by it all that much, since that's what I've seen in church since I was a kid.

It does the opposite to me, i actually laugh at it.  I think, "look at how evil these humans are", and "If that IS the case and im going to hell, im so glad i dont have to be with those evil people forever, but rather in hell with all the great people who werent christians, like patch adams, michael landon, bruce lee, kurt cobain...You know, anyone who was actually 'worth' knowing, so either way i cant lose.

Mmm, no offense, but I don't think that a tone like that is likely to be productive - as right as one might be regarding something, if no one will ever listen, then there isn't much good in talking about it.  When approaching someone to talk about something, you should always keep their position in mind, because you can't change what you don't even understand.  Your message sounds more like you're laughing at them than earnestly trying to show them the truth, which is pretty well guaranteed to make them defensive and thus unwilling to bother to seriously consider what you're telling them.

No one comes to a knowledge of the truth on their own, so it makes no sense to act as if one has great achievements to boast of if one has done so.

I know Gab, i wouldnt do it to everyone, but have you been on their website?  Theyve totally taken everything out of context and more or less made up their own gospel, its all based on lies.  They MUST realize that already...I think they perfectly well know what theyre doing, just like Fred Phelps and his mad family.  I cant talk seriously to people like that, they deserve to be laughed at in my opinion.  If i had made up a great case against their website refuting everything they wrote, they would still be spreading theyre lies.
But i do see your point too.
