Title: The Mind of God
Post by: Dandelion on January 30, 2016, 04:52:27 AM
This is from OUR TOWN, a famous play by Thornton Wilder, about the true meaning of life.

REBECCA:
I never told you about that letter Jane Crofut got from her
minister when she was sick. He wrote Jane a letter and on the envelope the address was like this: It said: Jane Crofut; The Crofut Farm; Grover's Corners; Sutton County; New Hampshire; United States of America.

GEORGE:
What's funny about that?

REBECCA:
But listen, it's not finished: the United States of America; Continent of North America; Western Hemisphere; the Earth; the Solar System; the Universe; the Mind of God--that's what it said on the envelope.

I will never forget how I felt when I first heard this line to the famous play.  I first saw the play as a teen-ager at a high school production at my school.
Those words almost 'stabbed' me with profoundness. Us....in the mind of God. It fascinated me.

The word "home" has a very, very deep and poignant place in my heart, but perhaps not for the reasons one might think.

Lately, I have given much thought to this word, home. I have traveled many a road, seeking it, in its deepest sense. And, I do believe I might be turning a corner, to perhaps coming to a new level of understanding and acceptance of it.

I have come to the conclusion that HOME, is where my God is. That is where I am at peace and feel loved. That is where I belong, as I am. It is the end of the road, the forever place I always longed for.
The material homes have come and gone.....they have been varied and often challenging. I have had many, many of them.

So, in light of UR, I began to look at the Bible verses about HOME. And, it began to take on an even deeper meaning, because of my new perspective on our final place of rest and HOME.

One of the verses I first turned to was this one..........as David wrote.........

Psalm 27:4-5New International Version (NIV)

4 One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.

Another familiar verse:

"For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'"Psalm 27:4-5

And, Jesus has told us:

1"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also....John 14:1-3

Also......

...19"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20

Of course, there are more.

What I have seen from this is that God must and will draw us all to Him.....we all need to go home, to Him.

He is Home. And we are His. There is no where else we belong, but with Him.

And, I do believe, He will not stop seeking us until He can one day shut the door to His house, with all His beloved safe and cozy within.

And, we can all say Good Night to the darkness and uncertainty that we have come to know ..... and instead of the darkness, we will be bathed in His light.

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9

Your thoughts, my dear friends?

In a quiet way, this is very profound, Lazarus Short. And for many, this is not the case. Some have families who do not open the door of their houses, or even worse, of their hearts to each other. And that is one of the reasons that God is so wonderful......He will always be there for us, ready to invite us in.  And that is one of the reasons I came to believe UR......I knew that God would never let us down.....I knew that the kind of love God has for us is what is written in 1Corinthians 13......and that HIS love will never fail.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails.

I just found these verses, as well:

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. ...2 Corinthians 5:1-21

The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10

Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. John 14:23

It is true.....seek and you shall find; knock and it will be open to you.

And, I was thinking today of the story of the prodigal son.

Where did he leave and where did his father (symbolic for God, the father) take him back?

Into his HOME. He welcomed him back home.

In perhaps the most powerful Bible story we know, the father took the wayward son, who had sinned against him and God, back home, in the most loving of ways.

You are still and always will be my son.......nothing will ever change that. I have watched and waited for you. We will celebrate your return. Nothing has changed.....you cannot take away your position or
my everlasting love for you.

And what did the son have to do to return? Just appear at the doorstep, because even before he said he was sorry, his father embraced Him.

This is who our God is, and this is where our home is. In the House of God, where our picture will always be hanging on the wall.

Now, I do believe there will be a process, by which we are all made ready for heaven. But, this is a very reassuring parable of how much God wants us back.

Another beautiful thing about home is, we are being built into a home for Him, a habitation of God in the spirit. As living stones, fitly joined together in the bond of brotherly love, bound  to the chief cornerstone we are becoming a house of prayer for all people. He is not ashamed to call us brethren.

...14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5: 14-16

We give light to all who are in the house. I never gave attention to that before, though I am very familiar with this verse and have read it many times.

Jesus is the light of the world; we are the light of the world, reflecting Him and thereby, giving glory to our Heavenly Father.

I see, EW. So beautiful.

Just found this.

Ephesians 2:19-22New International Version (NIV)

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Again, one more thought. I have been thinking about how many times in the Bible, those chosen by God were asked to leave their home and go and follow Him.

Moses, Abraham, Jonah, the Apostles, Mary and Joseph for a while when they fled to Egypt, and to go to Bethlehem, where Jesus would be born.I am sure I could think of many other OT stories of leaving one's home to follow God's call.

And what about this verse:

Luke 14:
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'

31 "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won't he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

34 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

"Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear."

I always cringe a bit when I read this one.

But, the point is clear. We must be willing to let go of everything and anything of this world, if we are to be His disciple.

He alone must be our 'all in all'.

Which brings us back to Galatians 2:20.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

And, now, I think I have gone full circle with this.

Us in the 'mind of God' to Christ living in us. We become one, with God, until our identity is totally entwined with Him. This goes with many of your quotes, Rosered!      :HeartThrob:

I will leave you with this quote from one of my favorite theologians, C.S.Lewis:

"Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself."
― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Amen.

the mind of God is to love....we ALL need to become less judgmental, more loving..to be loving is the hardest thing of all yet that's mainly what Jesus wants us to be cos He is loving...Jesus turned the other cheek, prayed for His murderers..told us to love our enemies cos He loves His enemies.

Amen! ...and you know, i've been thinking lately that everyone, ultimately will be happy with the 'role' they have played in this life (which will prove all truth of what is good from evil aka life from death?)

If being chosen is none of our choice, and also not because we are any better or worse than any others..

Then why would those of the 2nd resurrection/of the not saved during this life time, many if not most never having even heard of Jesus or the gospel.. Why should their restoration be any less 'perfect' than those of the first resurrection (a thousand years earlier). Yes, surely they will have their dying to self/the selfish carnal nature and the burning of regret, etc. yet to go through, but if it is none of our "choice" as to when we are saved/reconciled to God..

I know we know ultimately all will be filled with joy etc, but the role we all play in this life - I am not saying this very well at all! I consider I was saved at the perfect time and all things are working together all my life, for good, including my pre-reconciled days.. So why would that not also be true for everyone, including all those not redeemed and reconciled during this life time??

Just pondering out load.. albeit very clumsily

That God loves all and blesses His enemies, makes me think this way about this.. Potentially we all would perish if we were not rescued by Him, which of course(?) what with His wisdom, He designed the rescue of all from the beginning and surely has great purpose in letting (limited) choice ability run its course.. What a contrast His fulfilled blueprint of paradise perfection will be with this life and human history. It cannot be a universe of all going their own way (good and evil being 'relative' rofl!) for with that always is bound to be oppression.. power struggles... and ultimately all manner of error and evil, a virtual bottomless pit of dark potential. God proving His point by letting consequences run their course.. The false way of all babble (on) drinking the full cup... proving what is good from what isn't / what works from what simply cannot ever work.. But I am rambling..
:Peace2:

Amen.

THE LIVING GLORIFY GOD   acknowledging HIS LOVINGKINDNESS    and   grace     by sharing the good news  ,  this is how the dead are raised  to life in Christ as we once were ... dead in our sins    ..

   2COR 9 God Loves a Cheerful Giver
...12For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.

13 Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, \

14while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you....

The LIVING GLORIFY GOD IN THE EARTH      as it is in heaven   , the dead know nothing    and  do not praise Him ..

Amen! ...and you know, i've been thinking lately that everyone, ultimately will be happy with the 'role' they have played in this life (which will prove all truth of what is good from evil aka life from death?)

:Peace2:

AMEN  MARIE !!!!!!!
OUR JOY is the Lord   our peace  Comes from  knowing the Love  of GOD  :HeartThrob:  Isaiah 38
18"For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You;

Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.

19"It is the living who give thanks to You, as I do today; A father tells his sons about Your faithfulness. 20"The LORD will surely save me; So we will play my songs on stringed instruments All the days of our life at the house of the LORD."...

  the living praise God

The dead to not praise GOD   they do not Know God ,   they know nothing but suffering  and loss ...   in the grave where they go  puts them to silence ,
Psalms 31
6Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; Save me in Your lovingkindness.

17Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol.

18Let the lying lips be mute, Which speak arrogantly against the righteous With pride and contempt....

Even Babylon does not know God  , but in name only       as the beast and  whore of the earth  and false prophet  and satan glorify themselves  as gods of the  earth ...   be made silent   and all mouths will be stopped
only than can every knee    bow and tongue confess the LORD JESUS CHRIST   AND GLORY TO THE FATHER  WHOM IS ALL AND IN ALL

The end shall be total glory to  GOD  :dsunny: :HeartThrob:

"Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash." When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at His teaching, for He taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law. // Matthew 7:24-29

Just saw this on an e-mail from a church I had attended a few times.

I had to add it to the list.

Posting these thoughts and quotes and reading all of your responses, has helped me solidify the random thoughts I had originally, about what 'home' means.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
