Title: The Eons in the Sacred Scriptures
Post by: Tony N on July 23, 2014, 05:57:27 PM
In the Sacred Scriptures we have the longest segments of time called the eons.

Each new eon comes as a result of a world-wide catastrophe.

For instance, as far as we know, there are five eons. How can we know this? We look for world-wide cataclysmic events in the Scriptures.

The Bible talks about eons in the past. If we look in what is commonly called "The Old Testament" we find two world-wide catastrophes: Genesis 1:2a where the earth became chaos and vacant, and Genesis 7 where we have the world-wide flood. Only these two events mark the two eons.

If the flood of Noah's day was only a local flood in the Mesopotamian valley, it would not be a world-wide catastrophe and thus not present us with a new eon.
So we are now living in third eon called  "the present wicked eon" (Galatians 1:4) (Some per-versions of Galatians 1:4 have it as  "present evil world".)

The Scriptures reveal to us two future eons. So where are the world-wide catastrophes which inaugurate these two future eons?
At the end of this present wicked eon we have this:

Rev 16:18,19 And lightnings and voices and thunders occurred. And a great earthquake occurred, such as did not occur since mankind came to be on the earth; of such proportions was the quake and so great. And the great city came to be divided into three parts; and the cities of the nations fall.

That world-wide catastrophe brings about the millennial reign of Christ. Yes, Christ is coming back to a wrecked earth. If you thought the collapse of the Word Trade Center in New York brought about some changes in the world, wait till all the cities of the nations fall. It could result in many nuclear reactors failing to the point of creating many melt-downs. Water towers falling where no one can get fresh water. Power lines falling causing many to have no electricity. Bridges collapsing causing farmers not able to bring produce to stores or people able to get to stores. The entire banking systems will fail.

Then that eon (the millennial reign of Christ) ends with the world-wide conflagration. The New City Jerusalem lands on a parched earth in the fifth eon.

What is nice to know is that when this eon in which we are living ends with a great world-wide catastrophe, Christ comes back to save humanity in that destructive time.

I do understand that when Yellowstone erupts , its going to  cause   dark and  chilling  reactions

as well , after reading of the melting  roads  in July 14th .

For so very many things  are changing  fast , its hard to keep up with them all ,

there are literal as  well a spiritual significance  in everything  we see and hear  and try to understand

those whom trust in  Him till the end  are blessed    Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end

Rev 22:13   I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

What a comfort it is to know this  much !  :icon_flower:

Hi Tony,

I was thinking that the millenial age is one age, but then the Great White Throne/Lake of Fire may be another, because as yet, until the lake of fire period is complete God is not yet ALL IN ALL- which I consider to be the onset of the age of ages, or the age that has no end.

I wonder also if the great cataclysms accompany spiritual changes that are the actual cause of the age change.

I consider the possibility that an age passed at the advent of Christ, referred to as the "consummation of the ages" in Hebrews-

Hebrews 9:26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

As I see it it is possible that the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Christ initiated a new age- the god of this world cast down, the law anulled, the Gentiles intiated into the promises and inheritance of israel, the kingdom of God implanted in the bosom of the earth through the body of Christ. It seems to me that  kosmos and the eon changed as much perhaps as through the flood, a new world and new creation begun.

It also seems possible to me that new creation(old things pass away all things become new) is the real solid evidence of the change of eon. Anyway, just stabbing around in the dark, i see possibly 7 ages.

in which case there would be the pre Genesis age, the age until Noah, the age untl Christ, the age until the return of Christ, the millenial age, GWT/LOF age, and then the age of ages..... 7 ages

I mean, all we have of the millenial age is a few verses that give any detail in Isaiah and Revelation, maybe a couple more OT prophets like Zechariah who speaks about the transition into the millienial reign, or Micah, who speaks about the exaltation of the mountain of the house of the Lord. So I think it is possible that the GWT and LOF is something bigger than its brief mention accords it in the consideration of typical eschatology, being as it is further out and we are on a "need to know" basis on most of these things :o)

If there was no change of age at the advent, and if my impressions about the GWT/LOF are incorrect then maybe 5 ages is it :o)

That's an interesting thought.
As to "the age that has no end," we are assured that all the ages eventually will end.

QuoteI wonder also if the great cataclysms accompany spiritual changes that are the actual cause of the age change.

It is very possible.

QuoteI consider the possibility that an age passed at the advent of Christ, referred to as the "consummation of the ages" in Hebrews-

Hebrews 9:26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Well, there was no world-wide catastrophic event when Christ came. Also, let's make Hebrews 9:26 such that it agrees with my scenario (all others have to be incorrect LOL!)

"Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now He has been manifested to put away sin at the consummation of the ages by the sacrifice of Himself."
In other words. The Hebrew writer is telling us that Christ came so that sin would be put away at the consummation of the ages. We know sin is still in force during the millennium and new earth ages. So it will be repudiated when the eons finally end and God is then All in all.

QuoteAs I see it it is possible that the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Christ initiated a new age- the god of this world cast down, the law anulled, the Gentiles intiated into the promises and inheritance of israel, the kingdom of God implanted in the bosom of the earth through the body of Christ. It seems to me that  kosmos and the eon changed as much perhaps as through the flood, a new world and new creation begun.

Christ discussed with the disciples when the age would end and a new one come. He never mentioned His death as being the result of an eon/age ending but He did tell them of world-wide catastrophic events which would come about to end this eon.

QuoteIt also seems possible to me that new creation(old things pass away all things become new) is the real solid evidence of the change of eon. Anyway, just stabbing around in the dark, i see possibly 7 ages.
Ah, pulling an O.J. Simpson eh? :-)

Don't forget what Christ said would occur before the millennium comes in Matthew 23:4 onward.

QuoteIf there was no change of age at the advent, and if my impressions about the GWT/LOF are incorrect then maybe 5 ages is it :o)
I get 5 eons/ages.

"The fulness of time" could also refer to Daniel's seventy sevens of years from the going forth of the word to rebuild Jerusalem till the Messiah.
Let's not forget that when Christ came there was no world-wide cataclysm to end the eon.

I believe the chart is accurate. However, I think the rapture will occur on the 7th trumpet (at the end of the Great Tribulation).

Hi,
One of the reasons I brought up this point about the eons is I have some friends who believe the flood of Noah's day was just a localized flood in the Mesopotamian valley.
But if this is the case, Why would God have Noah take over 100 years to build a massive ark? Instead, God could have had him save all that time and just taken about a week to walk all those animals over the mountain range to the east. The birds certainly could easily have flown over those mountains to safety. But no amount of common sense will cause them to give up their position. They have made up their minds and that's that.

And since there were at least two eons we know of in the Old Testament, we see each eon was ended by a world-wide cataclysm. The world-wide flood had to have been a world-wide cataclysmic event. But even this is not enough to sway them. They believe God will save all. I just find it interesting how intractable people can be. I don't hold it against them. It's just interesting, that's all.

It seems to me there was also a change in government after each of these eonian transitions.

How very interesting! I certainly agree with some of that.. and what a very nice post written by Rosered!!

I'm afraid that's about as far as I got however..

:Chinscratch: ..let me see, how have I thought of it... ages and transitions / big change, but imo, not necessarily catastrophe.. in all cases..?

..that Gen 1:2 was simply the 'dry' elements.. and the flood ended an age because of how it says every living and breathing thing on the earth gone..{#1 to flood/catastrophe}..?

Then the languages were confused before mankind could wreak enough havoc to self destruct, waay before God's lesson would be totally proven..{#2 til languages confused & dispersion mankind} begining the age Abraham would be in..? {til after the life and etc of Jesus-#3 }

which especially after 70A.D. is the age of 'Christendom'{3} which has been turned on its ear by the false prophet/teaching.. but the years of our Lord a.d starting with the conquering gospel which continues its ride throughout this latter age of mankind..

til the beginning of the long 2nd advent{#4} at His return (represented by the Fall Holy Day of Trumpets) the age of the millenium{4} (imo).. Then at the great 2nd resurrection, the day/age{#5} of the great judgment and review/study of all human history (satan in LOF for this age{5} and age{6} a two fold process?) and some stubborn holdouts find their way to the lake of fire for age{#6??} until the last when God comes to Tabernacle{#7} with mankind and makes all things new{7, the last enemy vanquished is death, Sabbath/Holy Day/age/ of eternity?}

Peace! :Peace2:

Hi Marie,
Thanks for your thoughts.
In Genesis 1:1 I believe that God created the earth to be inhabited. He did not create it a chaos, see Isaiah 45:18. In Genesis 1:2a that earth became chaos and vacant. All life that was on it perished. It was a world-wide catastrophe.

Then the flood of Noah's day was a world-wide catastrophe. It, like the first catastrophe, has to do with the earth to change the eon.
There is nothing in the Bible called "the age of Abraham" so we don't need to go there. Nor is there an "age of law" nor an "age of Christendom."
Languages being confused does not a world-wide catastrophe make.

Quotewhich especially after 70A.D. is the age of 'Christendom'{3} which has been turned on its ear by the false prophet/teaching.. but the years of our Lord a.d starting with the conquering gospel which continues its ride throughout this latter age of mankind..

The Bible knows nothing of "the age of Christendom." All eon changes are the result of something catastrophic happening to the physical world.

Quotetil the beginning of the long 2nd advent{#4} at His return (represented by the Fall Holy Day of Trumpets) the age of the millenium{4} (imo).. Then at the great 2nd resurrection, the day/age{#5} of the great judgment and review/study of all human history (satan in LOF for this age{5} and age{6} a two fold process?) and some stubborn holdouts find their way to the lake of fire for age{#6??} until the last when God comes to Tabernacle{#7} with mankind and makes all things new{7, the last enemy vanquished is death, Sabbath/Holy Day/age/ of eternity?}

None of the above are a world-wide catastrophic event. Catastrophic events are bad things that happen to this earth we live on. Bad things. Really bad things.

Jesus told us what will occur to end this current eon we are in in Matthew 24:3 onward. No mention of an "age of Christianity." It is comprised of bad things to come.
