To me this is one of the most remarkable scriptures in the Bible. My heart lept when I fully realized what was being said. In study and sharing scripture with others I often rewrite the verse and simplify "religious" or difficult words. Also by including the definitions within the paraphrase sometimes understanding comes easier.
Romans 5:18-19 NIV
Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
My paraphrase with definitions included.
As the direct result of one act of violating a divine law (the disobedience by eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) all the descendants of Adam and Eve would be disapproved by God, unfit and sentenced to have physical pain, suffering and death, so also the result of one act of moral soundness and rightness was the removal of blame and penalty, which brings life for all men. For just as through Adams failure to obey everybody was born estranged from God, so also through the conformity of the will of Jesus to the will of God everybody is now without guilt or blame.
The way we have been taught in traditional evangelical doctrine would read this way.
Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness and the acts of billions and billions of people believing, receiving and repenting was justification that brings life for all men (if at the end of their lives the requests for forgiveness equal or exceed the number of sins committed). For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man and billions and billions of other men and women doing even more billions and billions of acts of believing, receiving and repenting was justification that brings life for all men (if at the end of their lives the requests for forgiveness equal or exceed the number of sins committed) the many will be made righteous.
Please understand my paraphrases are for my understanding only and no attempt was made to conform to the original greek meanings.
Perhaps others might have a paraphrase for other incorrectly applied scriptures?

All mankind are neutral recipients as to what Adam and Christ did.
Fair is fair! If we all are made sinners due to what Adam did, then it is only fair that all mankind will be made righteous due to what Christ did.

Those really say the same thing and I'm thinking of others now, like "the good works that He pre-ordained for us to walk in" but there is a specific one that says Jesus' good works are put onto our account. Maybe it was a certain translation that brought it out. I'll be scratching my head till i find it now! It was probably almost 30 years ago, but I still remember the excitement!

Romans 5:18,19 is great. It's funny how I always read over it when I was a "partialist", but now it's amazing to me how such a huge truth could've been sitting in my FAVORITE book of the Bible and I missed it a million times.
I think that 20 and 21 are just as good!
Romans 5:18-21 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
GOOD STUFF! I really like how Paul was sure to repeat his point many times because he knew people would think the good news was just to good to be true.

Thanks. Being a fan of Paul's epistles, I tend to repeat myself as well. It has a big effect on those who may be listening. It has been said that most people have to hear something about 7 times before actually seeking it out themselves.
I remember the LOVE I felt when God touched me back in 1990. That LOVE carried me for months, and I remember LOVING everyone, no matter what! (Yes, even "non-Christians!")
Later I heard another person say how, when you feel the Holy Ghost inside you, "you just LOVE everyone! There's no such thing as a bad person!" And I thought, ME TOO!!!
I think these verses in Romans reflect this same Spirit that Paul knew and that we also have known. It's the same Spirit working in all believers! And the Scriptures are in concordance with it! ---It's like reading on paper what's inside you!

:cloud9: Yes, I remember the love too. It was on the 4th day after my conversion, before I actually knew what happened to me 4 days before, even was. I was totally ignorant of all things God. I thought I was having a rather strange nervous breakdown, I was SO different from the moment I woke up after my night-time conversion prayer.
My friend and her then 14 year old daughter took me with them after my first protestant church visit with them (during which I sobbed non-stop), to an Indy mall. Whereupon the Spirit was on me so strong, I could actually sense who had not met the Savior yet, in the crowds walking past me. My reaction, was to to go up to them, dripping love all over them, telling them they just HAD to know Him, He loved them so much, and attempting to hug them. And, the normally very reserved person I was, saw nothing unusual about this.
My friend's daughter, however was mortified, and cried out to her mom, "MOMMMM, make her stop!" I thought I was well on my way to a straight jacket, and more than a few would have agreed with me, at the time, LOL......God does have a sense of humor.:laughing7:...

My first 'church visit' was to a 'church of Christ', no music and a bunch of old guys on the platform who looked like they were falling asleep. I relished every word spoken though, and closed my eyes and raised my hands - with a silly ear to ear grin on my face. Yes, it really is. I remember that overwhelming inner witness/confirmation. That's why we believe the bible so much and are unshakable. It freaks atheists out because they think it comes from being brainwashed :mshock: even though the term brain'washing' is really appropriate in a different way....
