16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

Hi!  ..I think what is appeased, and had to be appeased, is the (oh so tricky) human psyche and guilty conscience.. That - Christ Crucified - ultimately is strong enough to convince even the most horrendously guilty among us.
    I also think God?s wrath is cause and effect, and is why he can claim all judgment/consequences as his.
