My question is basically summed up in the title. I am struggling to understand what is meant by the phrasing "lead captivity captive". This refers to the verses used to show that Jesus went to the spirits in prison and preached to them.
I have grappled with it, and I still am reading it as Jesus led the people in captivity into a more captive situation. I just need help understanding this verse. Thanks!
I could be wrong Forest, but I personally believe it has to do with Jesus "taking captive" by His grace and love.

It means he leads the captive in sin to captivity in righteousness. We are slaves/captives to whatever has mastered us.

there is a set ''sign '' of the times , those designated to be taken captive in Rev 13 BY THE BEAST
This is a long answer , but Everything is coming true literally , unfolding before our eyes , God does not prepare a people for no reason , everything has been done before and it is happening again

Just like the days of Pharaoh when the Hebrew children were slaves to the worldly powers and become impossible to please such harsh taskmasters , cruel and without mercy and they stayed under its power till the deliverer come to save them and all the suffering on the beast and those under the beast authority [captivity , captive ] all held under Babylons sway
God sent Moses to lead them out of captivity , yet they still could not obey Gods Voice though the people sent/all the prophets in the old testament witness [our examples of the good and bad tree choices , despising and killing the messengers ] , now the new testament witness [our examples of heaven and earth shaking by Gods Word all false foundations built to crumble , there will be no peace or safety in trusting in them ]

Whatever held you captive to its powers , by being cruel to the poor and needy , will also be taken captive also and held in judgements of learning true righteousness , as all hearts will be exposed and opened up for all to see . GODS GLORY will be made known and opened even those whom pierced Him though and died for the world ....

Anyone who cannot see the signs of the times , I feel great empathy for them and am troubled in my heart and am trying to prepare for great losses as the temporary things will fail & fall & fade away and the eternal things will be made known to all .
But not to fear, but GODS LOVE will make things very real , we will know life and death at the same time as God separates them from each other . just as God is and was and will be made known to all.
Those whom know and been prepared by Him beforehand , will be able to help those whom do not know as he opens the eyes of the blind and hears with their ears the TRUTH and gives them a heart to understand all this worldly madness to set them free , but the worldly will still despise the truth sadly till they come though their great tribulation period as the DAY of the Lord becomes real to them also .
I was not going to say anything , but just could not say anything without clearing my own conscience , if anyone ask we are to share this faith in us moving and keep the hope alive till the Lord comes to free us all . those being in the Spirit on the Lord day and those still being in the flesh on the Lords day as God is creating both life and death in us all .
I must quit fearing mankind's persecutions and hatred towards the TRUTH and take up my cross and follow Jesus where ever He goes and forgive them because they do not know they are killing the Lord of glory . but we know to fight for His cause and stand in the truth at all costs till the end .
Because overcoming the world and being overcome by the world is the end results . and death is the last enemy to overcome .
My hope is it helps to understand the taking captive every thought in Christ to those captive and corrupted by the world and working both life and death in us till God be all in all . what was scattered abroad is being gathered back again and being made new , complete and perfected by suffering .
By the incorruptible seed / Word of God growing within us to the end of all things that belong to us , Boh life and death as we are Christs and Christ is Gods glorious possessions to be seen and known openly to the world as a spectacle a visually striking performance or display of GODS Living power as death will be swallowed up in victory .

Hopefully not the message sent , to help in the hour of need to know . So many wonderful ones sent for us to help us , why not share everything they gave us also , I do believe it is those gathered into the HOLY SPIRIT already and waiting for us to be complete in GOD also ,
that is how Love works out all things for the good of those whom love the Lord and are called out of the world for Him to purpose and use His own things .
