What about those who do not believe? Wouldn't they repent and believe if they were given a second chance? The answer is no, they would not because their hearts are not changed simply because they die. Their hearts and minds "are at enmity" against God and won't accept Him even when they see Him face to face. This is evidenced clearly in the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. If ever someone should have repented when given a second chance to see clearly the truth, it was the rich man. But although he was in torment in hell, he only asked that Abraham send Lazarus back to earth to warn his brothers so they didn't have to suffer the same fate. There was no repentance in his heart, only regret for where he found himself. Abraham's answer says it all: "And he said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead" (Luke 16:31). Here we see that the witness of the Scriptures is sufficient for salvation for those who believe it, and no other revelation will bring about salvation to those who do not. No second, third or fourth chances would be enough to turn the heart of stone into a heart of flesh.

FineLinen quoted scriptures, and said that those scriptures are believed. You said you could believe that you could fly and would go "splat." The problem with that is that the Bible does not say we can fly. If you believe FineLinen misunderstands the scriptures, that is one thing, however you compared her belief of the scriptures she is quoting to believing something that ISN'T stated in the scriptures. You compared apples to spaghetti.

You are proof of that little fellow. The fact is: the Son of God must open one's being to understand the Scriptures. You appear very young, and assuredly not well versed in the ways of the Lord. My suggestion to you, take a little time to acquaint yourself with the Living Life out of which will surely flow the working of ephphatha.

Born a Lutheran

Lars, a Norwegian from Cook County in northern Minnesota, was an older, single gentleman who was born and raised a Lutheran.

Each Friday night after work, he would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak.

Now, all of Lars's neighbors were Catholic and since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Fridays.

The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.

The priest came to visit Lars, and suggested that Lars convert to Catholicism.

After several classes and much study, Lars attended Mass and as the priest sprinkled holy water over Lars, he said, "You were born a Lutheran and raised a Lutheran, but now you are Catholic."

Lars's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood.

The priest was called immediately by the neighbors and, as he rushed into Lars's yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold Lars, he stopped in amazement and watched.

There stood Lars, clutching a small bottle of water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat, and chanted: "You were born a deer, and raised a deer, but now you are a walleye."

I believe the Word of God. When He says "ALL THINGS", He means, "ALL THINGS (Gr. pas)".

Col 1:16-20  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:  (17)  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.  (18)  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.  (19)  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;  (20)  And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

πᾶς
pas
Including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole: - all (manner of, means) alway (-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no (-thing), X throughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.

Which of the "all things" did he not create? Over which of the "all things" is He not pre-eminent? Which then, of the "all things", will He not reconcile, "who works all things according to the counsel of His will"?

All things created, All things reconciled.

However, the Word of God is true. Therefore believing the scripture cannot be proved to be false. A belief that you can fly is not true, and therefore would be proved false.

As I said, if you believe FineLinen misunderstands scripture is one thing. HOWEVER, FineLinen did not explain the scripture. FineLinen simply said she BELIEVED the scriptures. What, do you NOT believe the scriptures she quoted? Ah yes, you will probably say you believe them only that you have a different interpretation.

However, you did not challenge her interpretation. You challenged her belief in the scriptures themselves.

You inadvertently compared a belief in the Holy Scripture to believing that which is not untrue (that you can fly) which can be proved false. Oops.

The problem is you didn't make that comparison. FineLinen said she simply believed the scripture she quoted. You believe them too don't you?

However, you compared her belief to those scriptures being true as believing something NOT true.   :laughing7:

It would have been better for you to have said that you believe those scriptures too, only that you have a different interpretation, rather than comparing the belief itself in that which is true to believing something not true.

Hi there Eagle, and thank-you for your excellent post. All radically means all! In this particular case, however, all is ta pavnte which literally means the all.

#1 -Rom. 11:36

"From Him everything comes, through Him everything exists and in Him everything ends."

Ta pavnte= the all things.

Ta pavnte = in the absolute sense of the whole of creation, the universe. Of everything in heaven and earth that is in need of uniting and redeeming. From Him ta pavnte comes, through Him ta pavnte exists, and in Him ta pavnte ends.

#2. -Eph. 1:- 9-11

"He has made known to us the secret of His will. And this is in harmony with God's merciful purpose for the government of the world when the times are ripe for it--the purpose which He has cherished in His own mind of restoring the whole creation to find its one Head in Christ; yes, things in heaven and things on earth, to find their one Head in Him. And you too, who in Him were made heirs, having been chosen beforehand in accordance with the intention of Him whose might carries out in everything the design of His own will."

The all things in the heavens, the all things in the earth, and you who once were dead in trespasses and sins. That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one, the ta pavnte en/in Christ.

Ta pavnte = in the absolute sense of the whole of creation, the universe. Of everything in heaven and earth that is in need of uniting and redeeming.

#3 -Col. 1:20

"God purposed through Him to reconcile the universe to Himself, making peace through His blood...to reconcile to Himself through Him, I say, things on earth and things in heaven. And you..."

The all things (the ta pavnte) in the heavens, the all things (the ta pavnte) in the earth, and you who once were dead in trespasses and sins. God has purposed to reconcile the universe (the ta pavnte) to Himself. The ta pavnte/ the all, encompasses the ta pavnte on the earth and the ta pavnte in the heavens. The ta pavnte= the all, the whole enchilada.

Ta pavnte = in the absolute sense of the whole of creation, the universe. Of everything in heaven and earth that is in need of uniting and redeeming.

Finelinen never interpreted any thing. He merely quoted scripture. Scripture that clearly shows "all" means "all". And said he believed it.

Do you believe the scripture?

Most believers have no problem believing the first part of the verse that says "through one man all are lost" that one man being the first Adam,, but that same verse goes on to say that through one man all will be saved,, that man being Jesus.  All contained within the same verse.  Not taking anything out of context.  One full verse saying that there are two men. The first and second Adam.  One fell and took the whole human race with Him, the other was crucified and paid the price but only took a handful of the whole human race with Him? Why do you believe the first Adam was more powerful than the second Adam? The first could take the whole human race but the second couldn't? Scripture clearly states that "all" was on the cross with Jesus. The all in the first part of the verse means exactly the same as the "all" in the second part of the verse.

Also there were only TWO men.  The rest are "mankind".  The first Adam was the first man. The second adam was the second man. All were in Adam when he fell. All were in Christ Jesus on the cross.  Mankind , all of mankind fell and all of mankind received life.  The first Adam was not more powerful than the second Adam.

Do you believe the blood of Jesus was sufficient to save the whole human race? The whole of mankind or do you not? Do you believe Jesus had the victory ? If only a few are saved then how is that Jesus having the victory?

MORE, MUCH MORE

QuoteBut not as the offence, so also the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. (Romans 5:15)

Interesting to observe that while all Christendom will acknowledge that by one man, and his offence, death passed upon all men, yet they cannot accept the glorious fact that much more the grace of God shall abound unto all men. That one man's offence could cause such devastation of the human race, because death passed upon all men, does not provoke an argument, for the evidence is all around us. But when one man, Christ Jesus, releases the outflow of grace, through His obedience to the will of God, then people find it hard to believe that this shall have the same coverage, for ALL men.

Yet there is also a MUCH MORE to be brought into account here, for the FREE GIFT is not the same as the offence. One act of disobedience brought the judgment unto condemnation. But by the time the free gift came on the scene, there was not just one offence to take care of, but now it must cover many offences and a multitude of sins. Therefore, how much greater is this free gift, able to go beyond all sin and gain the victory, until ALL shall receive His life.

"For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ," (Rom. 5:17). There is no need to describe to what extent death has reigned. But there is a realm, which is greater in its dominion, as we much more reign in life. Death cannot keep its prey, for LIFE is greater than all death, and Jesus Christ is Lord, both of the dead and the living. He hath the keys of death and hell, and when He opens the gates of death, every captive shall be set free, and shall come forth into His life. "Where sin abounded, grace did MUCH MORE ABOUND," (Romans 5:20).

Much more than all the sin and strife,
We see in Christ abundant LIFE.

-Ray Prinzing-

No more let sin and sorrow grow, nor thorns infest the ground, He comes to make His blessings flow, far as the curse is found. Far as the curse is found.

I believe

I believe "the Lord of Hosts will make for all people a feast of choice pieces, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of well-refined wines on the lees. And He will destroy the covering cast over all nations and all peoples. He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord will wipe away all tears from all faces." -Isa.25-26

I believe Jesus Christ "ascended higher than all the heavens so that He might fill the entire universe with Himself." -Eph. 4:10

I believe that Jesus Christ is destined to reign until God "has put all enemies under His feet." -1 Cor. 15:25

I believe the end consummates in "abolishing every kind of domination, authority, and power." - 1 Cor. 15:24

QuoteI cannot tell how He will win the nations,
How He will claim His earthly heritage,
How satisfy the needs and aspirations
Of East and West, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory,
And He shall reap the harvest He has sown,
And some glad day His sun shall shine in splendor
When He the Savior, Savior of the world is known.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship,
When, at His bidding, every storm is stilled,
Or who can say how great the jubilation
When all the hearts of men with love are filled.
But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture,
And myriad, myriad human voices sing,
And earth to Heaven, and Heaven to earth, will answer:
At last the Savior, Savior of the world is King!

Hymn -Abrahamic Covenant-

The Abrahamic covenant all people embraced,
By it all who fell in Adam are in Jesus replaced;
For Jehovah hath sworn, and he will not recall his vow,
That in the name of Jesus every creature shall bow.

From his kingdom shall Christ remove all things that offend,
He will finish trangression and bring sin to an end;
No place for the devil nor his works will be found;
Where sin once abounded grace more shall abound.

Oh then shall the glorious restitution take place,
The reconciliation of all Adam's lost race,
Which Jehovah hath promised and announced unto man,
By the mouth of all his prophets since creation began.

To Zion the ransom'd of the Lord shall repair,
The Jew and the Gentile, bond and free shall be there;
All people encircled in the Saviour's embrace,
And sighing and sorrow to thier songs shall give place.

On the mountain of Zion God a feast shall afford,
And all nations shall flock unto this feast of the Lord:
The songs of salvation shall employ every voice,
Christ shall see the travail of his soul and rejoice.

Every creature in heaven, on the earth, and beneath,
Shall celebrate the triumph over Hades and death:
All rule, and authority, and power overthrown,
And God all in all, the whole creation shall own.

Hi there L.D.

Let's also ask 37/100 a couple of additional questions...

1 Peter 3:18-20

QuoteChrist once for all died for sins, the innocent One for the guilty many, that He might bring us near to God, being put to death in physical form, but His spirit entering upon new Life. By which He also went and preached to imprisoned spirits which sometimes were disobedient and refused obedience long ago when the longsuffering of God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the construction of the ark, wherein few, that is eight souls were saved through passing through the waves.

Questions:

1. Why did Jesus Christ preach to the disobedient dead?

2. What was the outcome of the ministry of Jesus Christ to the spirits of disobedience?

3. What did many of the earliest church fathers believe transpired when Jesus Christ ministered to these men of disobedience from the days of Noah?

4. What does zavw (zao) mean in Koine?

Pray To Love

The story has been told of when John B. Gough, the great temperance orator, was entertained by some friends in an eastern city, the mother of the household called him aside and asked him to go to her son Edward and have a talk with him. She said that Edward had been a wayward son; in fact, had gone so far in disgracing them that the father forbade him to enter the house. She said that she had pleaded with the father and had prevailed, and that the father had consented to permit Edward to have a room where he would never have to see him.

She said, "Mr. Gough, Edward came home intoxicated a couple days ago and is still in his room. I have been caring for him. Will you not go and have a little talk with him?" Mr. Gough said, "My dear mother, if you with all your love and patience can not do anything with him, I scarcely think that I can."

With a mother's persistency she finally persuaded Mr. Gough to talk with her son.

He knocked at the door and entering found Edward. Mr. Gough said, "Edward, aren't you tired of the kind of life that you are leading?" Edward said, "Yes, Mr. Gough, I am sick and tired of it." "Then why do you not quit it?" "Quit it? I can't, Mr. Gough; I am bound hand and foot with an evil habit." "Then why do you not pray, Edward?" "Pray! I don't believe in prayer; I don't believe in God; I don't believe in anything." "Oh, yes, you do, Edward," replied Mr. Gough. "You believe in something. You believe that your mother loves you." Edward replied, "I do not believe anything about it, I know she loves me."

"Then, Edward," continued Mr. Gough, "you believe that there is such a good thing in this world as love, and I am going to leave you here and I want you to promise me that after I go out, you will get down on your knees and pray to love." "Pray to what?" said Edward. "Pray to love, for that is the only thing that you say you believe in." After much persuasion Edward promised.

He afterward said that he felt very foolish when he knelt down to pray to love, but he had promised, and he tried to fulfill his promise. He kneeled and cried, "Oh love, love help me"; and straightway, as if through the cleft heaven, this text sounded as a voice in his heart, "God is Love"; and, still looking up, he said, "Oh God!" and there came to him the verse that he had learned years before, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." And he cried, "Oh, Christ!" - and it was done. He rushed out of his room to find his mother, and, when he did, he threw his arms around her neck and said, "Mother, I have found the Christ!"

Our poor, lisping, faltering tongues cannot proclaim the Gospel as we would like; but we have God's Word that is true for the present time, and for all the times of all the ages. God IS LOVE! IS - unchangeably! IS - eternally! God is love in heaven, in earth, in hell! IS - everywhere! And the great practical consequence is for you and me to respond to that God and to that love, to become filled with that love, one with that love, the embodiment and manifestation of that love to all men in all realms.

The best and most wonderful word in the universe is Love. For God is Love. And the best and most wonderful word in the inner chamber of our heart must be - Love. For the God who meets us there is Love. What is Love? The deep desire to give itself for the beloved. Love finds its joy in imparting all that it has, to make the loved one happy and fulfilled. And the heavenly Father, who offers to meet us in the inner chamber - let there be no doubt about this is in our minds has no other object than to flood our hearts with His love.

But the spirit of love is not in you till it is the spirit of your life, till you live freely, willingly, universally according to it. It knows no difference of time, place, or person; but whether it gives or forgives, bears or forbears, it is equally doing its own delightful work.

The spirit of love does not want to be rewarded or honored; its only desire is to become the blessing and happiness of everything that needs it. The wrath of an enemy, the treachery of a friend, only gives the spirit of love an opportunity to be more triumphant.

The rebellion of Adam but opened up avenues for mankind to experience and know the incredible depths of the love of God! God IS LOVE! And His SONS are of His own nature. The Sons of Love! What a blessed title! Little wonder, then, that the whole vast creation, sold under slavery and bondage to sin, sorrow, and death GROANS for the manifestation of THE SONS OF LOVE!

I Believe In The Restitution Of All Things

"Through the Son God made the whole universe, and to the Son he has ordained all creation shall ultimately belong."

QuoteHe has made known to us the secret of His will. And this is in harmony with God's merciful purpose for the government of the world when the times are ripe for it--the purpose which He has cherished in His own mind of restoring the whole creation to find its one Head in Christ; yes, things in heaven and things on earth, to find their one head in Him. And you too, who in Him were made heirs, having been chosen beforehand in accordance with the intention of Him whose might carries out in everything the design of His own will.

Dr. Arthur Tappan Pierson -The Bible & Spiritual Life-

"This view (Restitution of All) is so clearly scriptural that the only surprise is that it has not been more definitely and widely held. It adds immeasurably, both to the glory of Christ as the coming King, and the Father as the former and framer of the ages. It is the period typified by the eighth day of the Mosaic Code: the perfect glory of Christ, reserved for 'the morrow after.' The millennial 'Sabbath.' And while the millenial period is limited to a thousand years, there are no definite limits to this final age of glory."

-Dr. P. B. Fitzwater- (Professor of Systematic Theology- Moody Bible Institute) Christian Theology P. 407

"Then there is the Universalist who declares that the redemption provided by Christ avails for the salvation of all men. This means that what God has done for the salvation of sinful men accrues to the benefit of all men. This view of Universalism is quite widespread. Many leaders in the evangelical church hold to this view, even though they have not dared to declare it."

From the Lutheran ELCA website......

"The Christian hope for salvation, whether for the believing few or the unbelieving many, is grounded in the person and meaning of Christ alone, not in the potential of the world's religions to save, nor in the moral seriousness of humanists and people of good will, not even in the good works of pious Christians and church people. ... There is a universalist thrust in the New Testament, particularly in Paul's theology. How else can we read passages such as 'for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ' (1 Cor 15:22)?" (See also Colossians 1:15-20, Ephesians 1:9-10, 1 Corinthians 15:28.) -Carl Braaten-"

The universal scope of salvation in Christ

ELCA Lutherans will say with Braaten,

"Salvation in the New Testament is what God has done to death in the resurrection of Jesus. Salvation is what God has in store for you and me and the whole world in spite of death, solely on account of the living risen Christ.

... The universal scope of salvation in Christ includes the destiny of our bodies together with the whole earth and the whole of creation. This cosmic hope is based on the promise of eternal life sealed by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Through raising Jesus from the dead, God put death to death, overcoming the deadliest enemy of life at loose in the world. This hope for the final salvation of humanity and the eternal universal restitution of all things in heaven and on earth ... is drawn from the unlimited promise of the Gospel and the magnitude of God's grace made known to the world through Christ."

"A Survey of Bible Doctrine" by Charles Ryrie, Professor of Systematic Theology: Dallas Theological Seminary.

In the section on future things, he dismisses the Restitution of all things which he refers to as "Classic Universalism" as unbiblical.

However

In his K.J.V. Ryrie Study Bible, which was published a few years after his doctrine book, he says a very interesting thing in his footnote on Colossians 1:20

Col 1:20 .... to reconcile all things unto himself. Christ is the remedy for alienation from God, and eventually all things will be changed and brought into a unity in Him, even though this will involve judgment.

Seth,

The meaning of my analogy is your faith is only as good what you put it in. If I believe I can fly and go to my roof and jump, I will soon found out my belief was false.

true you would fall, are you implying that the scriptures are not true? :sigh:

I Believe

I believe that Jesus is "able to subdue all things to himself." -Phil. 3:21-

I believe that Jesus came "that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are in earth in Him. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His own will." -Eph. 1:10,11-

I believe "the Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.' -2 Peter 3:9-

-to be continued-

Seth,

Your missing the point. Believing in a interpretation of scripture that is not accurate is the same as me believing I can fly...splat. putting your faith in  something that is not true profits you nothing.
what makes you think you "interpretation" is correct. When I first read about UR here at tentmaker i was skeptical and I prayed for the truth to be revealed to me every time I doubted, I was given a confirmation in the scriptures  every time.

He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—he is supreme in the end. From beginning to end he's there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the cross.
