Title: Help with Col 1:20-23
Post by: God Chaser on October 07, 2013, 07:26:29 PM
Hi all,

Can I have your thoughts on this please, am I correct?

"which was preached to every creature of which I Paul became minister" Col 1:20-23

If the Bible WAS preached to all creatures, then wouldnt that mean All are already discipled, and that Paul was the minister! That doesent seem right, should it be past tense?

2784 kērýssō – "to preach". "to preach"  would change everything!

Also, does the word "things" belong in that scripture? It is used 3 times in Col 1;20-23 but I dont see it in the Greek interlinear...

Thanks!

The word "things" is used by some to falsely claim mankind is not intended. You're right that it's not in the Greek. That's why it shouldn't be in the English translation. See the attachment.

"20 and through Him to reconcile all to Him (making peace through the blood of His cross), through Him, whether those on the earth or those in the heavens.
21 And you, being once estranged and enemies in comprehension, by wicked acts, yet now He reconciles
22 by His body of flesh, through His death, to present you holy and flawless and unimpeachable in His sight,
23 since surely you are persisting in the faith, grounded and settled and are not being removed from the expectation of the evangel which you hear which is being heralded in the entire creation which is under heaven of which I, Paul, became the dispenser." (Colossians 1:20-23)

"20 Just as His glories in creation take us back to the very beginning, so the greater glories of reconciliation take us to the very consummation. The universal reconciliation cannot be fully accomplished until the close of the eonian times, when all sovereignty and authority and power and even death are rendered inoperative (lCor.15:24-27) and when all mankind are saved (lTim.4:10) and justified (Rom.5:18). This takes us far beyond the new earth portrayed at the end of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, for there He still reigns, many of mankind are still lost, and death is not yet abolished.

21 At present reconciliation includes only those who, like the Colossians, believe in Him and have not lost their hold on this great truth (or indeed, have never heard of it). Salvation depends only on the work of Christ and is not affected by our moods: reconciliation depends, on our side, upon our enjoyment of His favor.

23 The scope of reconciliation is not confined to mankind: it is as broad as creation. Its proclamation was made to every creature under heaven. It is God's loving purpose to bind all His creatures to Him with the cords of affection. To accomplish this purpose demands suffering—not only the essential suffering of Christ on the cross, but those of His afflictions which He endures in His members in the course of its dispensation." (Concordant Commentary on the New Testament pages 303,304)

The gospel having been proclaimed to all would not mean all men hav been discipled in any case, because not all men accept the gospel.

"If any man receive not our gospel it is because the god of this world has blinded their eyes that they might not see the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ."

hi!

I like how an interlinear I have says these verses, and I notice the word "things" is in parenthesis which means it's added, I think.. and thought of as implied? which means - added.. (1 Colossians 1)

20 and through him to reconcile the all (things) into him having made peace through the blood of the cross of Him, through Him whether the (things) upon the earth or the (things) in the heavens.
21 And you sometime being having been alienated and enemies to the mental perception in the works the wicked,
22 now but He reconciled in the body of the flesh of Him through the death, to present you holy and unspotted and unaccusable down in sight of Him,
23 if in fact you are remaining upon, to the faith having been founded and settled and not being moved elsewhere from the hope of the good news of which you heard, of the (one) having been preached in all creation the under the heaven, of which became I Paul servant.

"in all creation under the heaven" seems to have a sort of Greek drama flair to it to me.. Greek language and times, was very dramatic..?
