Title: tho considered orthodox - must be Challenged and indeed refuted
Post by: marie glen on February 03, 2017, 05:32:33 PM
This site looks interesting.. which I don't think I've come across before, but perhaps others have..

http://www.auburn.edu/~allenkc/etpunish.html (http://www.auburn.edu/~allenkc/etpunish.html) - this is a page of their site "ETERNAL PUNISHMENT - Is It Really of God?"

This is the headings or list of the paragraphs on that page:

THE CONCEPT OF ETERNAL PUNISHMENT though considered by many to be orthodox Christian doctrine, must be Challenged and indeed refuted. Some of its destructive implications are:

- The character of God is maligned.
- The devil is exalted and Jesus Christ is made a failure.
- Numerous plain statements of scripture are contradicted.
- Teachings of some of the most respected church fathers are contradicted.
- Like a corrupt tree, it brings forth evil fruit

I haven't had time to read it yet, but.. looks promising..?

oh.. it's the ULC - Universal Life Church (i got my certificate from them to be able to marry my son and my daughter in law last summer.. certificate says I can start my own church - but they include paganism as you can see - And I think now, that I have come across that above article.. forgot to go back and read it.. It still looks excellent!

ULC Interfaith
ULC Interfaith Listed in:
Home > Religion & Beliefs > Universal Life Church
Manager: mindysebastiani
A collection of Interfaith ministries, churches, and organizations arising from the Universal Life Church. Members come from a variety of faiths, including Christianity and Paganism, yet all embrace a view of Universalism: that there is truth in all of our faiths.

..well at least they're universalist.. (I do think there are one or two threads of truth in most faiths.. but definitely not ye olde hellish beliefs! among others)

:Chinscratch: I wonder who "True Grace Ministries" is.. no time to google them now tho..

An awesome article! -- http://www.auburn.edu/~allenkc/etpunish.html

I can't quite figure out the site though. I thought it was articles posted on their site.. but "True Grace Ministries" (I think) is ULC - Universal Life Church..

Which is "A collection of Interfaith ministries, churches, and organizations arising from the Universal Life Church. Members come from a variety of faiths, including Christianity and Paganism, yet all embrace a view of Universalism: that there is truth in all of our faiths."

Quote
True Grace Ministries is an interdenominational Christian ministry and one resource among many for disciples who seek ever more intimate communion with Christ within the household of faith, and who seek to engage the world in loving witness as ambassadors of God's Kingdom (Heb. 3: 1-6; John 17:20-26; Col. 1:23,13).

We believe the authenticity, genuineness, and inspiration, of the Holy Scriptures; that both the Old and New Testaments contain the revealed will of God and that the Bible is the supreme written authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

We believe that there is one God, whose nature is love; revealed in one Lord Jesus Christ, by one Holy Spirit of grace; that Jesus is the Son of the Living God. He came in the flesh, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.

and, it says also -

Quote
"in essentials unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, love."

The Rev. Carol E. Parrish, speaking of "Interfaith Christians," has stated it this way:

"An Interfaith Christian stands clearly within one's own faith, but respectfully honors all other world religions for contributions they make to the lives of humanity.
Building upon the area of sameness, we discover that, rather than amplifying the differences, we grow in an appreciation of the different histories, art, music, and culture.

We realize once again God loves to garden and creation blooms in a wide variety of ways."

I don't really disagree with any of that.. The information things they sent me when I got a certificate (to officiate my son's wedding) included suggestions for pagan weddings and gay weddings.. So it's possible I got the wrong idea about them, I personally wouldn't officiate at either of those.. in case of another 'god' being involved :O ! (I have gay acquaintances I love very much, but I wouldn't want to officiate at their wedding.)

Well, I've blathered on long enough..

The article I read was very extremely excellent..
What do you think? About this group "Universal Life Church"?
Does anybody else know much about this group?
:Peace2:

The article by Lee Salisbury at your link to Auburn University archives is from True Grace Ministries, not Universal Life Church. Excellent article.

True Grace Ministries appears to be an online clearing house for links for Christian Universalism  and has a lot of good resources...

Universal Life Church is a place where anyone with 40.00 can get certified to do marriages. They are universalists of the "all-faiths" type- displaying the icons of all the worlds major religions. That's all I kno about ULC.

I remember the Universal Life Church back in my Libertarian days, the 1970's, and it was a <nudge, nudge, wink, wink> tax dodge.  I figured they were going to get nailed by the IRS, and they did.

awesome resource.  I was stumbling across a lot of books from the 1800s that deal with some of the issues that I think make the most convincing argument which is how aion was understood and translated in extra bibilical resources like Plato and Aristotle.   I can say I am surprised at so many UR books from the 1800s.  The problem most people have with UR is that they think that all UR people believe that there are many ways to God when in fact most believe that there is only one way through Christ.  It is just a matter of when will all arrive at the door of Christ and go through.

Yes, this is a problem.... it will be a problem as long as Christ centered universalists expect people to recognize what they are- when those people have no knowledge of what we believe, and we share a "name" with a group that is very deceived. I prefer to use the "salvation of all through Jesus Christ" whenever I can, to disarm that, but it will always be a problem I think.
