I read the NASB growing up for years and still did till a couple of days ago. Let me explain.
I was reading Proverbs, now I have read Proverbs many many times in the NASB. But this time I was reading it in a KJV, and all of a sudden I got new insight, which I have never received from the Proverbs before. It was quite profound and I was truly surprised at the difference - beings as I got something very useful from the KJV, and something that is almost very common knowledge from the NASB
Let me explain:
(NASB)
Pro 5:1 My son, give attention to my wisdom, Incline your ear to my understanding;
Pro 5:2 That you may observe discretion And your lips may reserve knowledge.
Pro 5:3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey And smoother than oil is her speech;
Pro 5:4 But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.
Pro 5:5 Her feet go down to death, Her steps take hold of Sheol.
Pro 5:6 She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.
Pro 5:7 Now then, my sons, listen to me And do not depart from the words of my mouth.
Ok, so here is what I get, and have always got from the NASB. An adulteress's (regarding sex) ways are seductive and her ways are unstable and she does not ponder the path to life and does not know it. Note verse 6. Good advise indeed, but lets take a look at the KJV
(KJV)
Pro 5:1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
Pro 5:2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
Pro 5:3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
Pro 5:4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.
Pro 5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
Pro 5:6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.
Pro 5:7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
Now from the KJV, I perceive that we are talking about teachings outside of the bible, any teaching that does not line up with the written Word is not from the Holy Spirit, but from the enemy, the strange woman, the adulteress, Babylon, the whore.
These were not Solomons words exactly, but the Spirit of Wisdom's word's, whom laboured with him.
Lets look at the good advice and insight it gives on the way of the enemy in verse 6, notice that in the KJV she is trying to keep you from finding the path of life through her shifting ways and variances, basically saying that her doctrine moves in every direction, whatever is necessary for the moment to malign you, keeping you from the way to the Tree of Life.
But in the NASB, it merely says her ways are unstable and she does not know that path to life.
Another think I perceived from the proverbs in the KJV, that I did not perceive using the NASB - that the Proverbs speak truth, and it is like Jesus Christ speaking himself through her (the Spirit of Wisdom) in the proverbs - that is the way to the Tree of Life - Repent, accept remission for your sins through Jesus Christ, living in grace when make a mistake, do good when it is in your power, help the poor when you cross their path, help the widow and fatherless as well as God present you opportunity when they cross your path, depart from wicked ways, don't despise the poor in your heart, break the bonds of sin - and all in faith, through Jesus Christ indwelling whom guides our steps when we take these things to heart, know that God rewards those whom do well and seek to please him, and sets a snare for those whom are wicked and do not take him or his ways into account. And in this process we are afforded grace and longsuffering while we grow.
Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
Psalms 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Huge difference. Its enough to make me never read my NASB again.
Anyway thought I would share, as the way is being seriously maligned is this time of increased iniquity.
