Title: Praying in Tongues
Post by: MusicLover123 on February 13, 2019, 09:21:07 PM
Can anyone explain the benefits and purpose of praying/speaking in tongues, over speaking in English? How to speak more words, and if it is praying for multiple things at once?

As for me, I'm not sure.. except I think of it as a means of clearing the mind.. or praying via the Spirit.. which I don't think requires tongues but can include..

I don't think of it as any sort of proof.. which I think was popular thinking in some circles in the 80's - though may span much more time than just the 80's,  :dontknow:

By the 80's I'd pretty much given up on the churches.. And as far as the Bible's concerned it seems like some believers back then, in Paul's day, too were elevating it, or attaching too much importance to it.. Which I guess can be a sort of 'look at me, how holy and blessed by the Spirit I am'.. Whereas the fruits are actually, imo, much better evidence or fruit. And Paul also wrote to desire the better gifts, meaning better than tongues! Because tongues edifies self.. but other gifts edify others.

:Chinscratch: So.. tongues edifies our self.. that's why Paul advised praying in tongues quietly keeping it to ones self for the most part.

We're not to forbid gifts. Or let them puff us up..

So praying in tongues, imo, quiets my mind.. thus edifying, or building up my spirit.. like air to a fire.. ... !"tongues of fire" was the first manifestation of it..

in the day..there were many people from all around that spoke different languages..the gift of tougnes was used to testify of the gospel

to those who spoke a different language. That is why if you uttered in a foreign language..and no-one was present to declare what was said

[or who understood that language]they sat done.It was to build up in comprehensible understanding by this'miraculous gift'of theHoly

spirit. Unbelievers heard the gospel declared in a language they understood and believed the gospel!!

now, satan also has authority over tougnes...and will babble on and on incomprehensible things.Ionce heard about aperson that

made utterance in tougnes..and there happened to be a Japanese man passing through....and he was shocked..becaused filthy perverse

speech was being spoken in japanese.!so every good gift God gives..satan has his own imitation evil contrast.my  :2c:

Just to clarify, I'm referring to praying in tongues(personal spirit prayer language) and not gift of tongues(giving Spiritual truths in any language.) Though the second I am interested in if I was evangelizing fo a foreigner.

1 Corinthians 14
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

I can pray in tongues, though it isn't that complicated sounding yet, or know much words. I cannot interpret them either yet. I'm trying to do it faster too.

I try to slow down.. almost Native American like.. but it's only a seldom thing.. tho I've done a faster one as joyful expression talking to a new grand baby before :girlheart:
:Chinscratch: I've always thought of the prayer tongue and other language(s) tongue as the same gift, manifested differently for the occasion or need.. :dontknow:

well, people think their drunk when they pray that way.the priest thought little Samuel's mother was..and the believers baptized in Holy

spirit were accused of it,too. Of coarse, winebibbing accusations put us in good company. It's only happened to me twiceandIhave

noidea.whatwas spoken..I remembered one word'ishi" and looked it up when I got home. :dunno2:some things are not lawful to be uttered

like Paul spoke of,maybe?I prefer when He speaks plainly.I didn't try and do it,it just happened. Ican't help you there ML  :girlheart:

I've never experienced the drunk in the Spirit yet. There are experiences described as "waves of love" that I sure would love to have. I do get a bit of heat at times around my stomach area when praying in tongues.

Maybe praying in tongues is manifesting the gift of tongues, by speaking God's language?  :dunno2:

Amen.. I think I've read that in the scriptures.. "God's language" or language of angels..

...I think I've been 'drunk' in the Spirit before..  laughing and crying at the same time sort of thing.. or whoo-hooing because the joy was so strong.. sometimes if a truth deepy impresses feeling like I might fall over.. just simple things really.. overflowing joy is all I mean..

And I think the door or window of that is the "resting in Him".. truly not worried but just trusting Him to do His work.. feeling no pressure.. just a joy of living.. Not that life has to be all rainbows in order for the peace and joy to rise or be real.. Truth sets free.. A joy of assurance.. Knowing what we believe and Who we believe.

I think it's that UR peace and joy keeps multiplying and growing.. and sometimes just has to burst forth into song or dance.. or poetry or something..Into praise and thanksgiving..

In hard (or dry) times I try to remember the verse about entering His courts with praise.. I know it means come into His house and worship and give thanks.. but I've always had the sense that it also means thanksgiving, like praise and worship / love poured out, will part clouds of gloom, or stress.. anger.. frustration.. lack of joy, etc.. That when we praise and give thanks, we enter his courts.. we approach His Throne..

Light streams through clouds..

The idea of tongues has sometimes turned me off, as I don't like any sort of sensationalism.. (but hysterics is worse.. lol)

I have had very little contact with speaking in tongues. I have seen people do it, in churches and in Christian outreaches/coffeehouses, etc.

When I first saw it being done, I felt uncomfortable. I don't feel that way, anymore.

I was a Roman Catholic for 47 years, and a Lutheran for about 16 years, and neither of those denominations speak in tongues, or at least in the Churches I have been in. I do often go to different churches, though.

I have never attempted it. Perhaps, never will, but I will leave that decision up to the Holy Spirit.

Someone who does speak in tongues told me the sound starts/originates from the stomach. Or something similar to that.

I think speaking in tongues is always the gift as mentioned in those verses. Ask yourself; where did you/anyone learn it? It wasn't from language course you picked up in the local library. I assume you are serious about this and didn't cook up your own fantasy language.
So were does it come from?
I think you meant to say your speaking is less skilled that mentioned in those verses. ?
I look at it this way, Jesus had the Gift of Healing. That comes in many gradations. For some healers it takes fervent prayer to heal a sore throat, for Jesus it took a few seconds to heal a blind, lame, etc person.
The gift is exactly the same, the power level isn't.
Many people play some sort of sport. Only a few are world champions.

So 9 gifts, limitless power levels. And it's not you who determines that maximum output of your gift. But I think you can block development by rejecting it.

Well, when I had the baptism of the HS(I was doubting it before it was, but someone said you don't have to be perfect for it/be at a certain knowledge point for it) I felt a burst of heat in my stomach and chest, and smelt a "fireplace." I had never heard anyone speak in tongues before, so I only knew about it. I had the idea to just open my mouth and speak, and then the sounds of tongues came out. Not to mention the great amount of heat on and in me.

Many seem to describe feeling the ecstatic joy and love, a great/overwhelming amount of it, at this event. I still have not unfortunately, that is why I was doubting the experience. Along with no spiritual experiences(good ones anyway) despite asking for them. I guess I have to trust He will in perfect timing.

I was listening to someones dream from this year on "being caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air" event, and they described in the dream this overwhelming amount of joy. But she said that even then, God gave her the impression that it is merely a taste of what we will experience, the human body cannot handle that much. Not to mention the increasing joy and love we will feel, it will always be increasing without end.

There was a time I'd have thought all this stuff very odd...  :Chinscratch:

But... I had a telepathic experience once...
...It only ever happened once...
But I just want to say that it really happened...It shook me up...Still does when I think about it.
It made me ...'uncomfortably amazed' because telepathy was something i just did not believe in at all.  :dontknow:

I remember in the past; myself and family members would sit holding up cards from a deck and try to 'telepathically' communicate what the card was to the other person....
...It never worked, so I had long ruled telepathy out as something that was impossible.

I don't believe I could ever 'evoke' such an experience at all like I have some 'power' to do it...It just happened...
It actually occurred when a family member was on their death bed and I believe it was because it was the only way he could communicate now...
...He spoke telepathically to me and would move his arms in different gestures to prove to me that what he was telling me in my mind was real.
He did this three times so as to cast away all my doubts and told me he would die soon (and gave the day) (and he died on that day (yet I'd expected him to live a lot longer)) and he told me some other things which I shouldn't repeat as they were personal to the family.
Btw he also told my parents later on he had seen Jesus (he wasn't religious) and that his mother and father had been to visit (who had long since passed away).

I used to think earth life was just 'born', 'work' 'die'...Nothing could have prepared me for all this stuff lol!

I love the mystery...I never pray for too much revelation because I 'revel' in the mystery...I function better when I wonder.  Sometimes I feel 'piles' of information (revelations) come upon me though...I have to write it all down before I lose it spiritually...and often I do (forget the information before I have time to write it down) and I can never find words to repeat what I learned...It's like losing a piece of gold...  Somtimes i even read back what i wrote and it doesnt' make as much sense because I lost the spiritual understanding i had earlier when i wrote it and i have to get back to where i was again...

Anyway...Off topic but...   :laughing7:

Love your   personal experiences  , Thanks for sharing them ,

Its spiritual growth  and we all love that   the Lord Jesus  personal touch from the Holy Spirit /Father  , living Words   from heaven  full of Life   and come to you:HeartThrob:

I had the groaning of the Holy Spirit  speaking the  heavenly language  over my sick child  , So I know you bowed  down low and humbled yourself  ML , but the Lord gave the interpretation in understanding what to do next for healing .
We just are vessels  or instruments  for the  working of the Holy Spirit by being connected in Christ body and making the substance of faith  a thing hoped for as done before our very eyes .

It usually is by a request for healing  of sorts  , be it  the church , body of Christ as a whole or  a certain  thing particular ,as a miracle  . or works of the Holy Spirit  edifying and making  our faith even stronger  in the works of God as the impossible is done with not being possible with  just mans desire .

When it is true ,  its done , and a binding up  of broken  and scattered things making a whole ,a coming together in Truth  but there are the false  also before man  for show , I have seen both  apply  sadly   as the lying signs and wonders  of satan appearing as an angel of light :sigh: a discerning of spirits  , and cannot deny  what you have seen  for the better or for the worse .

speaking in tongues is the same Spirit of prophecy , the testimony and witness  of heaven and earth coming together , no doubt there is a heavenly court  in session and granting  favor  and reprieve   in mercy  and the binding  of evil  that they are stopped /staunched  and loose that  power  to destroy any longer,  perhaps with the same fire of the Holy Spirit . binding on earth what is bound in heaven  and loosing on earth what is loosed in heaven  , being mercy  on our lives /souls of affliction .

God is making believers  out of us all   , He is in the miracle business

a sign, mark, token

that by which a person or a thing is distinguished from others and is known

a sign, prodigy, portent, i.e. an unusual occurrence, transcending the common course of nature

of signs portending remarkable events soon to happen

of miracles and wonders by which God authenticates the men sent by him, or by which men prove that the cause they are pleading is God's
God is separating  the truth from lies  all the time and every where and in everyone  , especially in those that believe already  , because we are waiting on the Lord and rest in hope   till  the Lord  comes to bring it to light and openly  before all  to see .

God bless  , I have no answers, but   you will know  in your heart when God does answer  your request/plea  .

I could not find anything called ayla in Strong's but this webpage includes ayla as meaning gazelle in Hebrew? I don't know how or why it means gazelle, if Strong's doesn't mention the word...

https://www.babynamespedia.com/meaning/Ayla

And eloh, could actually be spelt "eloah" for Hebrew, and the hebrew meaning here. "Mighty, powerful One"

https://www.hebrew4christians.com/Names_of_G-d/Eloha/eloha.html

If it is actually spelt "aiyla?"
http://www.babynamewizard.com/baby-name/girl/aiyla

"A beautiful girl who is strong a fighter and is so easy to fall in love with..."

I'm no girl, and don't know if this even applies here, unless it is a person to meet. Reminds me of the "warrior of carol, truly a patron" dream I had last January.

Post by: marie glen on February 20, 2019, 05:04:25 PM
This may be a little crazy but to me, your phrase fits what has been on my mind.. :2c:

Eloh.. Eloah.. Elohim.. in the kingdom of animals.. or plants, there's many but in the Kingdom of God there is Father and Son, Elohim.

Ayla.. woman..  :Chinscratch: how to say this.. please bear with me..

This morning during prayer and study, i was thinking about two bits of scripture.

Nebuchadnezzar's being given the heart of a beast for 7 times - a shadow and type of humanity's having the heart of a beast for 7 times - 6000 years plus the millennium is 7000. And Nebuchadnezzar after the 7 times comes to his senses. Just like (I think) after the millennium comes "the judgment" wherein I believe all not yet saved will be resurrected and over the course of the judgment, come to their senses - in the words of the Psalmist "all the ends of earth will remember and turn to the LORD and all families of the nations will worship before Him". (22:27)

And the second bit of scripture was "the Stone of stumbling.. the stone (cornerstone\foundation stone) the builders rejected.." Why does it cause one to stumble? Ego! Nebuchadnezzar thought he was all that! (As the saying goes.) So he was given the heart of a beast.. as was humanity.. why are kings and ruling powers called beasts in scripture? Not hard to figure out. (The modern day fascade of generous benefactor is not a true face.. can change in a moment..)

When I opened my tablet I got a news headline about a Hamas related meeting and banquet, which the new Congresswoman of Mn. is going to speak at. And it reminded me of the vision of Zechariah chapter 5, a basket of wickedness carried aloft by women.. to be "put on a pedastal in (mystical) Shinar."

Every so often i get a sense of things moving quickly on the world stage... ["After 2 days, He will return.." so I feel relatively safe saying not until the early 30's / late 20's for perilous times around here. :2c: :dontknow: ..but sometimes sense that quickness.. but with God, how soon is soon anyway?

The next thing I saw was an image.. you know ads on the side and all. It was an image about kabalah a mystical, magical type belief of Torah Hebrews.. a cult.. The image showed all the world's (major) religions.. how the outer crust of them - the literal - was for the less enlightened, but the inner mysteries and wisdom, only the few enlightened were aware of/initiated into. And included in this image and list was Christianity. Gnosticism was of course the inner wisdom of the few enlightened and more wise ones.. and the literal understanding like a crust you could safely throw away-(tho I may be exagerrating a tiny bit for emphasis, :laughing7: )

I immediately thought of the imagination i'd had of the women - to my mind, that they were wearing white (sacred, among other meaning) putting wickedness on a pedestal.. The ancient  mystery religions of the nations were 'goddess' / feminine in essence (fertility rites, unwanted babes sacrificed to Molech). I don't know if others have noticed the return, so to speak, of the goddess in today's world..

My thoughts returned to Nebuchadnezzar... how manking, oops, mankind, i believe, will create a human governing body to be 'god'.. And watching the wind blow snow out my window, the thought came to mind, a beast will hide in the thickets, until he gets the chance to pounce and catch his prey.

Then i got back to the tablet and came to this thread and "Eloh ayla" registered to my mind as great or mighty feminine - promoting wickedness on a sacred pedestal.. Earlier this morning i had said a short spontaneous prayer, how do i leave the message of urgency (to not disregard bible prophecy altogether..) at tentmaker.. and then move on, be done with it.. the message of urgency one day.. for days of our kids? grandkids? (I truly do not want anyone to say to me, why? Didn't you tell us?)

And one other thought i had this morning.. Will gnosticism swallow up the faith after all?
:Peace2: ..might all be just me, of course..  :2c:    :HeartThrob: God bless..

Just as a warning, I've heard the Kabbalah is basically black magic, so stay away from that stuff.

Quoteand the literal understanding like a crust you could safely throw away-(tho I may be exagerrating a tiny bit for emphasis, :laughing7: )
Stuff like new age and satanic cults, along with the eastern religions love symbolic stuff and twisting Scripture. Like calling Jesus the first "enlightened" spirit master, that He "realized" He was god. I watched a testimony of one person who had a "new age Bible" that twisted verses to support all the blasphemous practices.

QuoteAnd one other thought i had this morning.. Will gnosticism swallow up the faith after all?
You can basically say gnosticism ties into Babylonian mystery religions, which ties into new age, which ultimately ties into satanism. New agers are just dishonest Satanists.

And what about the lukewarm church? How many churches have spoken against abortion, or the times we are living in? Most of the churches are more concerned about getting money in than getting the Gospel out.

I tried one more tongue word I've said called "atai." In Hebrew it apparently means "moments, timely." I don't want to look deeply into this, as I know it would be used in a bad way, but interesting to note how some of the words have been Hebrew, and I've never heard of them before.

Just tried one more I pray in tongues with, called "ataya." Never heard it before either. In Hebrew means "God is my helper."
