Title: Plagiarism ?
Post by: AJ on January 31, 2008, 09:26:40 PM
PLAGIARISM =
1.  stealing somebody's work or idea: copying what somebody else has written or taking somebody's else's idea and trying to pass it off as original
2.  something plagiarized: something copied from somebody else's work, or somebody else's idea that somebody presents as his or her own

Okay folks,  here's a scenario.

In the Secular world:
If woman 'A' makes up a recipe for "Blackberry soup"  then woman 'B' takes the recipe and puts it in her recipe book to pass on, but doesn't give credit to woman 'A' – then that would be plagiarism, because woman 'A' is the author of the recipe.

Now here's a different scenario.

In the Kingdom of God:
Abraham Lincoln said word to the effect, "All I want is to be a pipe for my Lord."

If God pours some of His 'liquid gold' in pipe 'A' (a revelator thought) and pipe 'A' puts it down in writing, then pipe 'B' reads it and passes it on without giving credit to pipe 'A', is that considered plagiarism?

Does pipe 'A' have a right to expect that pipe 'B' give him credit for the 'liquid gold' ?
Isn't God actually the author of the 'liquid gold'?

Do you see where I am going with this?

Whether it's a revelator thought...or a song.... or a poem ....or like Peter at the gate Beautiful, telling the lame man to get up and walk....
what would we think of Peter if he instructed the healed man to make sure and give HIM credit for something that God actually did?

While its true the lame man never would have been healed....if Peter hadn't done his part...but does that give any man a right to expect credit for something that actually was authored by God?

I remember reading of song writers of yesteryear, that they would use alias names and not their own, to keep away from getting credit for it.

Actually, I found some of my writings, posted by other folks without any recognition for myself ...and quite frankly, I was happy to see it being used.... and smiled about.

What's happen to Christian believers today?

It seems we live in a 'me,me,me' 'mine, mine, mine' 'pat me on the back'
'I need an atta boy' 'give me my credit due me'  mentality.

If God is the true author of something....then why can't believers just be happy that God's truth is getting out....stop all the fussing?

YOU  AIN'T  the author, .....you are just supposed to be a PIPE that God is using.

Well that's my rant today,
Any thoughts?

Peace, AJ

I agree. Although in academic circles theological texts should be cited and all that, but when it comes to claiming certain revelations, it's silly to think it's yours alone to give the to world and that you're more special than the next person because you happen to be able to hear God better than they.

I agree  :laughing7:

What if John or Paul decided since they got the revalations that they should get credit or money  :mshock: I dont think the gospel would have gone far....

I think this is something God desires to work out of us... if we are HIS VESSEL then what comes out is HIS..... Just like Jesus said - I only speak that which the Father tells me. Jesus never wanted credit.

Now - how about if I design a piece of software, not kingdom related, and someone steals the code and uses it and knocks me out of business - what then?

Is there a difference between things of the Kingdom and our "work" to make a living  :dontknow: :dontknow:

:cloud9: Amen. The first few words of the book of Revelation are "The Revelation of JESUS CHRIST". Anything that is revealed then, is ALL, HIS revelation, because it's His Spirit that has the job of revealing, which settles any false illusions of ownership, does it not?  :mshock: Men think they can lasso the wind, don't they?  :laughing7:

When I was first ordained and serving as an associate minister (whatever that is) in a large non-denominational church the senior pastor (whatever that is) was going to record his first album of songs. I was given the assignment of getting copywrite permission from all of the song writers whose material we were using. Typically I was told by the song writer's staff to talk to their publicist and they would tell me what we would have to pay to use the material.

There was 1 notable exception and this was in the mid-eighties. I called Phil Driscol's office and told the receptionist that I needed to find out who to talk to for permission to use a song that Phil had writtten. A minute later, a man came on the phone and said that it was Phil Driscol. I told him what I needed and he just asked if I was a praying man. I said that I was and he said then ask the Holy Spirit if you can use it as He is the One who wrote the song. He ended by saying "whatever is okay with the Holy Spirit is fine with me".

Way cool and it left a great impression in the future of the way these things should be handled.

Ecc 1:9  That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, "See this, it is new"? Already it has existed for ages Which were before us. 11  There is no remembrance of earlier things; And also of the later things which will occur, There will be for them no remembrance Among those who will come later still.

Yes, there is nothing new under the sun! Someone has already been there and done that!  :mshock:

I'm glad you told that story, John.  I went to one of Phil's concerts once.  It was amazing.  I was not a "fan"of his music. I don't even remember the circumstances behind my being there but as he played upon that trumpet, I felt like I was on the verge of being transported- somewhere.  Whew!

Im glad you guys feel this way!

I'd already passed on some of the beautiful pics from Hollys blog to some friends that needed cheering up. Theyre not all that Christian so I just called the email nature's beauty.  Also I've used Brians words about Romans 6:7  being a "little nugget" to spark an interesting discussion on another board, and I've relayed the great story from SeekerSA about angels in Russia.

Didn't credit anyone here on those occaisons, allthough I do link back here sometimes.

Plagiarism is good when its spreading the love!

I agree, because online I copy and paste so much great stuff that I could NEVER say better that I forget to post links and say who it's from so many times I'd be in jail for "stealing" the rest of my life!  :mblush:

When it comes to the Truth, especially UR, US/ etc, I really don't feel all that guilty about copying and pasting, in hopes that someone will see the Light of the Scriptures and how others feel about the subject.
