This scripture made no sense to me.
Why would God choose the serpent for Moses to lift upon a pole?
It is like giving glory to the serpent.
But this thought came to me.
That the devil defeated himself. Since he decided to crucify Jesus the son of God. He mistakenly sealed his own fate.
Also the scripture came to mind which is, if satan cast out satan, how can his kingdom stand.
I believe this is a prophetic word from God is to show one of the ways that Satan will be defeated and that is civil war in his kingdom.
On the cross, one of the demons tempted Christ to come down form the cross and save himself.
But the other princes wanted to crucify the Son of God.
So here we have war in the devils kingdom already at this point.
maybe God chose the serpent on the pole as an example of God ordaining something and man corrupting it. Eventually the Israelites were worshipping this image and it was removed with the ark IIRC. (although it could have been any symbol I guess and they likely would have worshipped it) But the serpent represents our carnal mind, and of course self is the greatest idol of all.

This serpent of brass is a prophesy of Jesus Christ on the cross JN.3:14-15 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Now why would Christ be shown as a serpent? We find the answer in RO.8:3 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son
in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Jesus bore the likeness of sinful flesh , the likeness of the serpent, 21For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2CO.5:21.
