I have a big addiction to an earthy thing that i don't think i will ever overcome in this lifetime. It's so extreme that lately i have been hoping that i will be reunited with it in heaven because i love it so much. It's been a huge part of my life since i was around 8 years old and i have tried to leave it behind but i cant.
It's Jeeps... I am a huge jeep fanatic and I'm not posting this in a cute way i seriously have a problem. When i was 8 may dad bought a 1977 CJ7 and i loved it it was fun to go driving around the woods in. I could not wait till i turned 16 and got a jeep of my own. Well i did, when i turned 16 i had a good job making good money and i bought a jeep (more than one over the years but currently only have one). I got so much enjoyment out of working on it and modifying it and learning how to repair them. Jeeps were a huge part of my life but i quit messing with them for the last 7 years because of reasons.... I recently pulled my old jeep out of storage and started fixing all the little things that needed fixed. And I'm starting to fall in love with it allover again.
I know it's stupid but this jeep was such a huge part of my life that i really don't want to be without it. What is tentmakers thoughts on this type of thing? Is there a possibility i still might have my jeep in the next life? Is it a sin to be so attached to a earthly object?
When does an enjoyment, which is innocent, become an obsession? I am not sure.
I guess our barometer must always be the question, "Does it interfere in anyway with putting God first?" Or, we can also ask ourselves, does it make me less loving towards God and our neighbor, whomever that might be.
There is no guide to measure that. We just have to examine our thoughts and actions, and put them before God, to see our hearts.
1 Corinthians 2:
6Among the mature, however, we speak a message of wisdom—but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7No, we speak of the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God, which He destined for our glory before time began. 8None of the rulers of this age understood it. For if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9Rather, as it is written:
"No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no heart has imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love Him."a
10But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
14The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone's judgment. 16"For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him?"b But we have the mind of Christ.
Blessings on your search and discoveries.
We all have our own 'jeeps' to discern.
One of my favorite quotes:
I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess. Martin Luther

On top of dandelion's sound advice, I'd say you'd have a problem if you melted down some gold and built yourself a golden jeep to worship. I think you have a cool hobby and i can totally understand the appeal.

There may be a Jeep or two in heaven. I would never dispute that.

In the past it was an obsession it interfered in my relationships with friends and family. I put my jeep's #1 and i spent all of my time and money on them. It's not like that anymore but now that im working on it for the first time in 7 years im thinking back to when i spent all of my youth taking it offroad breaking it and replacing the parts i broke to make it better. I was an atheist back then and now that i am a Christian and i have learned some valuable life lessons it's not like that anymore. I just find myself thinking about how when i die i wont have it anymore and it kinda makes me sad lol. I feel stupid for feeling that way about a hunk of metal but i invested all of my youth in it and spent all of my time in it going camping ect... I used to say i wanted to be buried in it and i was kinda serious...
I keep trying to make excuses that earthly things are like status symbols that make the person feel they are important and rich like high end exotic cars and not a old jeep with duct tape and bailing wire holding stuff together. I have no idea why i would need my jeep in heaven because im pretty sure no one drives cars there. But i have this hope that maybe heaven is kinda whatever you dream it to be because everyone has different tastes. To me heaven would be a log cabin in the woods and my jeep, but then again Heaven is perfect and my jeep is far from it lol but i like it's imperfectness.
idontknow,
I think it is great that you have a love for Jeeps. I think you should enjoy them, and thank God for them.
I have done quite a bit of mechanical work, as others on this forum have (i.e. Bushy is an aircraft mechanic in rural Alaska!). I find that with the experience that God has given me, I often use those abilities to help others with their mechanical problems (I'd bet you do also). It's kind of cool if you think about it as a gift from God. As much as I can, I let people know that it is His doing, not mine!
One other thing, in Ecclesiastes 3:3, I'm sure the writer is speaking about Jeeps when he says:
1 To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up [that which is] planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; [Ecc 3:1-3 KJV]

Amen! to these responses..!
The only thing I might think of to add would be I believe heaven comes to the earth.. because Jesus returns here and here (imo) is where His millennium will be.. then later, God's throne comes to the earth.. And God will "tabernacle with mankind" - which tabernacles was in large part, a week long camping out..
I believe heaven will be much more earthy than many currently think.. Hey, even Yahweh traveled on a flying platform.. (Ezekiel 1)
I hate to be a downer, but you are all forgetting the following verses:
"A man shall not look at a jeep as one would look at a woman, or that man shall be smitten in more ways than one..." (2 Addendums 4:20)
"And I saw a vision, a great jeep, driving through the streets of Babylon in third gear..." (2 Caveats 3:26)
:LH: :LH:
that wAs meant to be funny wasn't it? :mshock:

lol
here is a picture of my jeep from back in the 90's when i was still a teenager. it's nothing special there are better jeeps but i had a lot of fun with it. I know there are a lot of "car guys" and most of them like classic muscle cars and such as do i... but i love my jeep it's weird even though its really not worth that much money, to me it is priceless and has so much sentimental value i cant let it go.
