There are examples of dream interpretation in the Bible and almost countless other examples in other culture. However, medical science has seem to demystified dreams and Freudian and Jungian views of dreams have fallen out of favor among most psychologists. I believe it is possible for God to send dreams if he wants to, but when he does send a dream, should it still be necessary to interpret it? Given what scientists and doctors say about dreams nowdays, does anyone here believe that any dream can have meaning beyond one's brain consolidating information?
I don't know but I sure have dream some wierd ones! :omg:
Tell me about it. Those dreams in which a character appears and acts completely out of character are sometimes the strangest.
Absolutely God gives dreams, but so does pizza! :laughing7: The mind itself is amazing as well. I have had symbolic dreams which have helped me understand things that are SO FAR beyond my conscious intellect.
- byron
We have so many examples in scripture where God sent dreams. The dreams that had no readily available interpretation were followed by a desire of the dreamer FOR an interpretation and an interpretation was given.
It was also prophesied by Joel that dreams would be given when God poured out His Spirit upon all flesh.
God has used dreams in my life in tremendous ways. When it is a dream that it supposed to minister to me in some way, there is a certain "knowing" that it is from Him.
I believe any dream or any THING can have meaning if God GIVES it meaning.
I haven't felt led to delve into any sort of dream science/psychology though.
:HeartThrob:
I think God can speak through dreams and send messages but I believe the majority of dreams today are just the result from our activities of the day. If you notice, in the Bible all the dreams had to do with something great that was about to happen.
CHB
:cloud9: ABSOLUTELY He gives dreams. And I agree with your comment Bryan. That's EXACTLY what He has done with me. Before you go to sleep, submit yourself to His Spirit, especially your carnal mind, command it to go beneath His feet in you, as every enemy should, then watch what happens.
Our carnal mind is easier for the Spirit to bypass when we are asleep. It is His enemy, and will reason you to death, literally. Saul's name runs into a meaning of reasoning, and that is an apt description of what the carnal mind does to try to circumvent the Spirit of God in our lives.
There are also such things as night visions. He can open your eyes to see things spiritually, when you are asleep. They seem like dreams only because you are asleep, but your mind could not see this way. Most normal dreams are dimly lit; a night vision from the Spirit of God is just like you are looking outside in the noonday sun, for brilliance and clarity. Yet you are asleep.
When Paul said, whether in the body or out of the body, I know not, it was because with any true vision, awake or asleep, it is so real you are not sure if you weren't there bodily, or not. I had no one to teach me these things; the Lord had to teach me what I was experiencing and where it was in the Word. He is awesome. Blessings to all....
PS. Interpretation of dreams is also a function of the Spirit of God. What He gives, He will interpret, either to you directly, or thru someone else that gift operates in. It is part of the prophetic giftings.
Wow, thanks for the awesome replies, guys! I recently had a dream in which I was standing in a place with "the noon day sun" sort of light. There were five guys standing on the edge of a brilliant green hill facing a light. The light was brilliant. The guy in the middle turned around, looked at me, and smiled as if he was happy to see me there.
Before I fell asleep that night, I submitted my flesh to God by imagining myself "putting on the armor of God," so to speak so fleshly dream stuff has a minimal (if any) chance of mucking up the message.
:cloud9: Well, you pray about it, but what hit me as I read your dream, was the middle of the five fold is the evangelist portion of Christ in us. If you look at the natural hand, which is a representation of the spiritual hand of God, ie. the manifestation of Christ AS the 5 fold, this is what you see. (And green is the color of life and covering.)
Thumb = apostle. The rest are enabled and strengthened by this one.
First finger = prophet. The "pointer". It points to error, both tears down and builds up.
Middle finger = evangelist. He goes "out" farther than the rest.
Ring finger = pastor/shepherd. He is wedded to the flock.
Little finger = teacher. This is the smallest because it goes into the ear the easiest.
As He raises up this portion of who HE is in you, one of the things you may find, is Him sending you places you would not normally go, for the purpose of Him sharing what He has made life IN YOU. Blessings to you.......
Thanks! I'll pray on it...
One principle that I have found trustworthy is that the dreams that are given by God do not fade like those given by late night pizza. LOL. Corinthians says that the things that are seen are temporary and the things that are not seen are eternal. Spiritual things have longer life span than do natural things.
I am reminded of Mary when the prophet and prophetess spoke to her of Jesus at his presentation in the Temple on his eighth day. She hid these things in her heart until the appointed time.
When I wake up having had a very visually clear dream that does not quickly fade from my memory upon waking, I make note of it and often will share it with my wife. If like Nebechanezer, I find that several days later the dream still troubles me, I will begin to seek God for the interpretation of what He is trying to speak to me.
However, if it fades with the daylight, I don't give it any more thought.
John
:cloud9: Good point, John. That's essentially what I do, too. Some there is no question at all. Some I think are Him using the soul to communicate things that need to be dealt with in that realm. Blessings to you and Happy New Year!
QuoteHowever, medical science has demystified dreams ...
I'm not aware that dreams have been demystified. It could be that new information about dreams have come along, but last time I looked, they were still a mystery.
When we dream, our brain EEG looks as though we are awake, our eyes move rapidly as though we are seeing something, yet our bodies are somehow deactivated as though we are asleep (except in rare cases of sleepwalkers). It strikes me as irony that while awake we can be more asleep than when sleeping. Oftentimes in sleep, we are awake sleepers. Many great scientists, composers, and inventors have received that moment of clarity in a dream. Of course people have all kinds of theories about dreams, but no one really knows why we dream, and every theory I've seen about it is not particularly compelling. Dreaming remains a mystery.
Cardinal, a lot of people here reference the 'five-fold,' but I've never had that teaching. Could you give me a little background in what that refers to? Thanks.
:cloud9: What He has taught me is different what most teach regarding this. I listed the 5 fold ministry portions of Christ, that we enter into thru the baptism in the Spirit of the inner court realm, above. He apportioned Himself to us, for the HG to do the works thru us, in line with the portion that was "deposited" in us on our own personal day of Pentecost. There is a lot more, but this is it in a nutshell. Blessings to you.......

Well, demystified as far as many in the general public are concerned. Many people think, "Well, science gives this explanation as to how things work, then there must not be any spiritual significance to it at all!"
I guess I need to change that to "seems to be demystified" in the OP.

I was blessed by this explaination, Cardinal. Thanks for sharing it. :HeartThrob:
:cloud9: That is something that I was blessed with about 19 years ago, when the Lord specifically told me I could listen to a man's tapes (I had been alone with the Lord for a year or more at that point, while He taught me) that were offered to me. I had refused them 6 months before, because He made it plain to me one other time that He was my teacher, when He chastised me for going in a Christian bookstore to buy some books. He wanted to lay the foundation in me, and I was wanting to take a "shortcut", LOL.
So imagine my surprise when 6 months later, He tells me to get those tapes. I did, and the Lord used them to confirm what He had taught me about the sons of God, and the spiritual application of the feasts. I was over the moon with joy, when I listened, literally crying and praising God on my living room floor, because this was the first time, I became aware that anyone, anywhere, was hearing this message from the Lord. The man's name was Peter Demetris, and he had a church in NY at that time. We serve an awesome God, ever faithful to feed us our daily bread, just when we need it, and not a minute sooner or later, but always right on time. Blessings to all......

Some dreams do not fade no matter how many years have passed and so I have often pondered this that many if not most of our dreams originate in the natural (carnal) mind while other dreams seem to be apart from our natural mind like they were given to us for a purpose that we may not and usualy don't understand in our natural concious mind without being given spiritual
revelation as to the sender of the message received weather carnal or spiritual.
In bringing this up there were two dreams
I had at five years old (almost 6years old) one happened while in the hospital under ether while having my tonsils removed,
the second dream was three days later while recovering at home, these two dreams are vivid in my memory after well over 60 years and have since had the connection between the two dreams revealed, to put what I dreamed into words is no problem, however to say what has been revealed to me regarding those two dreams is another thing, every man born of spirit receives revelation into spiritual things and to quote Paul "sometimes is unlawful to speak lest we become exalted beyond measure" and possibly because it edifies no one except the one receiving the revelation pertaining to his personal walk by faith, the journey we all take as strangers passing through a foriegn land.
These two dreams very early in my day are not the only vivid dreams that have never faded that I have had but are the earliest in my life that I can remember.
It appears God does send man messages via dreams of which the meaning may not be fully revealed for many years while other dreams originate from our carnal mind and are soon forgotten, fading away.

Fire Walker

You triggered an old memory for me FW. I had my tonsils removed at seven, and just before fading off into unconsciousness I saw two skeletons gleefully square dancing together :mshock: (no joke). I remember thinking "this is not a good sign"

I was recently introduced to a man that calls himself "Snowman" on a forum of his, that is
really "good" at intrepreting dreams, probably about the best I have seen, at least what I have read. I have found myself that God intreprets mine to me, but that I need to be quite a while
and not think that I am instantly going to understand, like FW, it takes yearsl.
There are some other things posted there on that site I'm talking about
that one would have to overlook, be still
about, and skip, but if anyone wants to know, I can give it here........or tell him to come on
over and invite folks..........whatever is God's will.

It must be wonderful to remember your dreams....I rarely do. And the few dreams I do remember are more on the nightmare side....lots of running, fear, terror, dark and dank places. I wonder what that is supposed to say about me?
Shibb, do you ever take vitamin B- complex? Try it and see if it helps you dream more happily!
:cloud9: That's what most, but not all, of my dreams were like before coming to the Lord, AND, Him teaching me to bring my mind under submission literally by commanding it to go beneath His feet in me, daily. Try it. That's one prayer I KNOW He wants to answer, as the carnal mind is His enemy. Blessings to you......

I take about 15-20 vitamins pills daily. Should I take 2 of the B-complex maybe?...one in am and one in pm? I never thought vitamins could affect dreams.
Cardianl....I just don't remember my dreams at all. I know we all dream, but I just don't remember mine. It doesn't matter if I have a restful sleep or a restless sleep; I just don't remember my dreams except for the few that have been terrifying.

Many people who start taking B- complex report having more vivid dreams. I occasionally increase my B vits if I'm feeling unusually down. I'm a big vitamin/mineral fan because they have helped me so much.

It says you are passing through the valley of shadow like the rest of us, and headed victoriously out of the gates of sheol. (edit: ooops, and from the looks of the posts above - possibly suffering from a lack of vitamin B?)
I'll also add that in my younger days (both physically and spiritually) there were a lot more dark encounters/experiences. Definitely not saying I've 'arrived' but facing and conquering fears have dramatically reduced, or really eliminated what I will call 'senseless/apparently meaningless' fear.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Card,
Those two dearms many years ago? yes they were of the spirit though I could not have said that at the time of the dreams, no other dreams can I recall in the bank of memory other than around seven , maybe a few more vivid brilliantly lit dreams in my memory, all other dreams have faded. In these dreams there was like an unwritten instruction or guidance given while the dream involved being drawn with two optional directions available to remain or leave the world at that time, I did not see this at such a young age, the spirit was with me no doubt to stay here when a voice in the dream said "no not here go over there"
so as I turned to go over there the same voice repeated as I faced another direction the voice said " no not here go over there",
I was standing in the center of a ring of pyramid and a spinkx every other one all the way around me on the outer side of the ring, at that age I did not know the meaning until many years later.
After that dream in the hospital then three days later I had another dream that was related to the first while recovering at home, while I slept on the bottom bunk during the daylight that day, in the dream a child about my age appeard on the top bunk and rolled the mattress back and looked down at me and said" come with me,
come with me" and I said "no not now I need to stay here" the upper bunk turned into it seemed like a cloud and then the dream ended.
There is a purpose that God has for us to remain in this world until his work in us is finished here, some do return to the Father
earlier it may seem, yet we ourselves can't speed up nor slow down his purpose in us here in the temporal world, we can't add or take away one day of our journey from over here to over there, from begining to end, to believe so appears to be all vanity, it is all of the author and finisher of our faith Jesus Chirst, not us walking in a faith of our own.
Much of the spiritual guidance and inner instruction comes via dreams and visions weather we are even conciously aware of the instruction at the time of such dreams, that may come many months or even years later when we then see we had already followed the things we were guided and instructed toward weather we were even aware during the course, it is appearing more clearly now that these instructions on our course through this world are written within us and we are waking up to them one day at a time..
Peace,
Fire Walker
:cloud9: Amen, Firewalker, that's true. I believe from what He has shown me, that the sons of God that are the firstfruits company He is raising up IN and AS the firstfruits, were chosen in Him from the foundation, for such a time as this. The dreams and visions aspect of the Spirit are one way He communicates with us before we even know Him, or His Word, because it's easier for Him to bypass our carnal minds that way. The Lord called me as a child of ten in my first dream/vision, but I didn't know who it was that called me, and didn't find Him until I was almost 30. Then He revealed to me Who it was that spoke to me.
He gave me this dream in symbols a child could understand. In the dream, I saw a man in a white gown, with a silver colored long vest like garment over it. The clothing seemed lit from within. He had glasses, and was bald except for white tufts of hair that seemed to circle all around his ears. He had a book in his hands and he was flipping thru the pages, never took his eyes off it. He was standing in a flying saucer doorway, and all I knew was he was going up to the heavens and I wanted to go with him.
I was crying so much, I soaked my little girl's flannel gown during the lengthy dream, begging this total stranger to take me with him into the heavens. I heard the most loving voice that I ASSUMED was him speaking to me as I begged, saying to me, "No, not now, I'll come back for you when you're older. No, not now, I'll come back for you when you're older." I was sobbing, telling him, "You can't leave me here, I don't belong here."
It was so real, after I woke up, I literally went to the window to look outside to see if he was still there, and I was going to go out the window if he was, LOL. After I was fully awake, I was confused as to why I would say, "I don't belong here", and why I would want to go, in the first place. I remembered the dream my whole life, like it was yesterday.
Nineteen years later, and 3 months after meeting the Lord, I was told by the Lord to call a girl I had gone to high school with to witness to her. I did, and she ended up sending me to another girl, or so I thought. I ended up with an appt. with the girl's father first, who wanted to meet me, who I was told was a minister of some sort in a town 45 miles from here. We spent 4 hours talking and I felt so much of the love of God from him and for him. At the end, he asked to pray together before I left and I agreed. He sat in front of me and we held hands to pray.
In an instant, as soon as he finished, I was caught up, no longer hearing or seeing anything around me, including him. What I was seeing, was the dream I had when I was 10, and with a shock of recognition, realized that it was the man in my dream that had just prayed for me! I heard the now familiar Lord's voice say to me, "See? I told you I'd come back for you when you were older."
Imagine his shock at seeing me like I was in a wide eyed coma for a few minutes, unresponsive to him talking to me, to me coming out of it, and tears streaming down my face, for no apparent reason. He asked me what had just happened to me, and I was thinking, I so hate to tell him, Lord, because he'll probably think I'm a nut case and throw me out of his office......but I said, I have a dream to tell you about. I had it when I was 10.....
To his credit he listened, and at the end, told me if I had come in 2 weeks earlier, he wouldn't have believed me, but 2 things had happened in the previous 2 weeks.
1) a woman he was counseling had a dream of him in the identical robes and the Lord told her they were Moses robes (he was a deliverance minister), and 2) the church had received a word 7 years before that had not come to pass yet. That week, a word came that on that day's date, the word would come to pass. He showed me where he had written it down on that day's date. The day did not end there, but this is all that pertains to the dream.
Now it is all amazing, anything God does is amazing, but I had never seen this distinctive looking man in my life. I actually grew up 200 miles away from him, so there was no way I ever saw him as a child.
So the point is, God is giver of dreams; it's the Joseph part of the experience of consuming the shewbreads, that as spiritual priests we now "eat" or have formed in us by the Spirit of God. Joseph was a dreamer of dreams. Once He has made that life in you, it is just another way of Spirit to spirit communication, and He is faithful to speak to His children. Blessings to all.....
I have been part of a dream interpretation group for a year or so. It is really interesting. I have gotten some great insights about myself by analyzing my dreams with the help of others, and a professor who has experience in dream interpretation.
In my experience, some dreams are just consolidation. Most are trying to send messages. A few are precognitive.
Whether God sends them or not, I don't have an opinion on that.
Giz
I personally believe that anyone who claims to have a dream interpretation "ministry" should be avoided, too close to fortune telling IMO.
Should God give you a dream with a message, I would imagine that He will give you the interpretation too and should be backed by a 2nd witness. Personally I prefer to hear God's voice in my waking hours, He speaks clearly enough once you learn to discern His voice.
Joe 2:28 And it shall be afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; your old men shall dream dreams; your young men shall see visions.
Well if you are relying on dreams you must be old LoL.
Dreams usually occur at the point of waking and what seems a long time is generally short in duration, even a few seconds at most. Ever wondered why you wake up after a dream?
I think too much mysticism has been placed on dreams with the aforesaid scripture. Maybe in the times of Joel, w/o the benefit of literacy, maybe this was a way God communicated.
Anything prophetic will have the Lord revealing the meaning, if not, let is slide.
Dream Research, Sleep Disorders & Science of Dreams
In 1953, Eugene Aserinsky of the University of Chicago noticed that the eyes of sleeping babies moved beneath their eyelids at certain regular intervals. This led to the discovery of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep periods, which occur at roughly 60-90 minute intervals throughout the night and which contain the dreams which are the most vivid and most often remembered. Since then, EEG (electroencephalogram) recordings, which monitor brain activity during sleep, have been used to map the various stages of sleep. These states are classified roughly into sleep onset (hypnagogia or stage 1), non-REM sleep (deep sleep or stages 2,3, and 4), and REM (or paradoxical) sleep.
Nightmares, Anxiety Dreams & Recurring Dreams
Almost everyone has experienced one or more dreams that contain anxiety or outright fear. These experiences can be quite traumatic or become recurrent. For some, unpleasant dreams or nightmares repeat in actual content. For others, the content may change while the theme remains the same, such as scenes of falling, or of being pursued or attacked, of being late or unprepared for class, a presentation or an exam. Some people even dream of being stuck in slow motion and unable to move, or of being naked in public, to name a few common themes. Research has shown that most recurring dreams are described as being unpleasant. Furthermore, many dream theories converge in their view that this type of experience is associated with lack of progress by the dreamer to recognize and solve related conflicts in life.
Fear of nightmares from early in life, or other anxieties or misguided beliefs about dreams and the unconscious can block dream recall, but this can usually be overcome by learning about the useful nature of dreams and by recognizing that many nightmares, like a bitter but quite necessary medicine, represent opportunities for healing and insight, and can warn of psychological imbalances that we need to remedy, or of current behaviors or decisions which may soon become detrimental unless we change them, as exemplified in this dream by Stanford University pioneer sleep researcher Dr. William Dement:

I think a second witness is a good idea when dealing with major life changes or decisions based on a dream. I've seen people claim a dream as their authority to do something really off the wall. But then again, there are plenty of folks who would say that WE are off the wall!
:cloud9: Amen. There is ALWAYS a counterfeit for any original of God, that's true. But when it's God, He will make it known, with confirmation and revelation, one way or another, even if it takes 20 years.
I personally don't care when He speaks to me, asleep or awake, the important thing is that He speaks at all, lest I have created an Ishmael and like Abraham's experience, He stops talking at all for about 20 years. :sigh:
There is no "ministry" of dream interpretation, and hopefully no one thinks there is. The Spirit of God is the interpreter of anything God does. Forgetting this fact, and not realizing that God has His own way of witnessing to the veracity of the message, is why I heard many a sickening, condemnation filled, interpretation of tongues, when I was visiting the Spirit-filled churches.
On the other side of the coin, there is a tendency to put God's Spirit in a box, thereby throwing out the baby with the bathwater, which is why there is little life of it left in the churches. My personal favorite "truism" about God's nature is this; He can do what He wants, with who He wants, anytime He wants, and doesn't need our approval, and especially our own understanding, to do it. My :2c:. Blessings to all.....
Book of Job tells of God "speaking" in "dreams" yet man perceives it NOT.
Sometimes tho, man sure perceives it, right? Cardinal?
Your dream when you were a young child was beautiful.
I do think God should intrepret our dreams to us, and I have learned to NOT tell mine right
away lest I get or think the wrong intrepretation. I have been given some understanding '
"this" year about some dreams I had in 1992!!! It is not that God is slow, it is ME! ha
Joseph also told his dreams, and they put "him" in the pit for it! ha
Remember, Jesus Christ is "a man of sorrows" "disallowed indeed by man" but to YOU, He
is precious.
:cloud9: Yes, it was beautiful of Him to do that. I may be the only one who needed to "hear" it this week, as I have not thought about that in years. He used it as a sort of witness to many in my family who were alive then and some close friends, as I had already shared the dream with them before I came to the Lord, and then I got to share what happened when He sent me to that man.
My mother came to the Lord as a result of it, and what happened to me in the church later that evening, and was slain in the Spirit in that church that next day, as were 2 of my best friends. None of us had any idea there even WERE gifts of the Spirit or that the Spirit was that REAL, so God used that to draw many into the reality of His presence.
And I heard that about 1992, LOL! Sometimes He has to hit me with a brick to get thru, I think. Then sometimes I have forgotten some, and when it comes to pass, He reminds me, He gave it to me way back then, and I didn't get it. Others I have remembered, pondering what He was trying to tell me, and just have to walk it out, until He is ready (or has me ready to receive it more like it) to reveal it. It's all God, and it's all good, Amen? Blessings to all.....
Thanks for all the replies to this thread, guys. All the different viewpoints have given me some things to think about.
Lately, my dreams often consist of being confronted by either Satan, or some other evil person, or by a catastrophic event. In every case, I come out the winner.
Just last week, I had a dream that I was somehow mixed up in the underworld. A Mafia Don had given me the "Kiss of Death". At first I was tempted with fear, but then my fear turned to anger, and I started to strangle the Don, after which he suddenly disappeared.
Several months ago, I had a dream where I was standing on a sidewalk, the sidewalk started to collapse under my feet into some kind of sinkhole. However, instead of being pulled down into the sinkhole, some external force picked me up, and carried me across the collapsing earth, until terra firma was found, and then I was placed gently down back on earth.
Then there was a dream where a street gang was chasing me, and then I was cornered into an alley. With no way out, I looked up into the sky, stretched my arms upward, and suddenly I started ascending, and the next thing I knew, I was actually flying, somewhat like Superman, but not as fast.
I suppose the interpretation of these dreams are generally around the notion of being delivered from evil.

:cloud9: And you won't have until it's already done. He told me that that is the reason no man knows the hour or the day, because if we had any inkling of the Word that is coming that makes the final change life in us, our carnal minds would corrupt it before He could raise it (Christ as the Word in us) up. And since He won't give His glory unto another (image).....Blessings to all....
