Title: Cursing
Post by: Eduard on June 18, 2013, 03:42:12 PM
Now, some priests, at least from what I've witnessed, say we shouldn't curse and especially not mention the devil or hell because that would mean we love the devil. Well, I disagree. If a Jew mentions Hitler and the Holocaust often, does that mean he loves them?

When I say "What the devil just happened?" I mean to say that what happened is so despicable that it may as well be the devil's work, not that I approve. Also, Paul mentioned handing a pair of believers to Satan so that they would learn not to speak blasphemy. In Romania we have a common "swear word" that translates as "May the devil come to you"

The reasoning(IMO) is that any swearing is disagreement or dissatisfaction with what is occurring or has occurred. It implies that the person swearing does not believe God is in control and is working out his perfect plan according to his perfect will.
If we are to treat all as if Christ himself was standing next to us and/or in us, would we swear at or belittle any that the Lord loved? (and He Loves them all)

That's a good point, but I never swear to express disagreement with God's will. Nevertheless, there are others who do...

I never heard that before! About not saying the devil, or hell (or, h, e, double toothpicks?) :laughing7:

that it would mean you revere them! do people sit around just dreaming up new commandments?

or maybe it's a clever way for (you know who) to get no one mentioning 'him' the less folks hear of u no who, the better.. Talk about clandestine!

Good point.  But I wouldn't carry it too far.  Don't want to be a moral robot.  What does God care if I say dang, darn, or damn?  It's all the same.  If one is OK, they are all OK.  If one is a sin, they all are a sin.  We need not confuse good morals with good etiquette - that will lead to Pharisee-ism.  I don't believe in bad words.  Only bad language usage - you know, when use words to hurt others, to build your self up, or for dishonest gain.  In my opinion, slanderous gossip is a sin - saying a cuss word not.  But if you are going to cuss, you must be able to do it in good faith, not believing you are sinning. :2c:

my point was that if swearing is an expression of dissatisfaction with what is, then it is sin.
Ask yourself, can I even imagine Jesus talking or acting in this way?
(He is our model and if inside us as He is in all true believers, is what we said or did contrary to Him?)

I understand.  What I was saying was basically the same thing, only I applied it to how we use language.  I agree, to use language to complain about the status quo is a sin because God created the status quo.  However, not all "cussing" is complaining - i.e. to use an expletive as part of an expression of surprise.  :2c:

Peter struggled with frustration and lack of control   and cussed and swared  and even swore  an oath ,  :sigh: all  3 a  bad  deal , Jesus knew   Peter would fail Him

I can see myself as Peter sometimes     , we fail in things we never thought we  would fail in , those trials and these examples in His Word  , give me hope that  none of us any better off than the other    , we learn  what we are made of  than we Learn what God is made of and  it by trusting in  Him and His Spirit will any of us survive at all

remember  it was satan whom desired to sift  Peter as wheat   Jesus fortold him  so .Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."

Mat 26:70 But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about."
Mat 26:71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and [!] said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."

Mat 26:72 And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."

Mat 26:73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk [fn]gives you away."

Mat 26:74 Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed.
Mat 26:75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

Thank you rosered, that was beautiful. You too Glenda Marie.   :iagree:

jbertonbounds also made a great point, that we should be convinced in our hearts that we're not sinning while we are cussing.

Often I think things I shouldn't, and sometimes I say things I shouldn't.

I'm convinced in my heart that it's my flesh/satan in me that curses - in any manner - and dirties my conscience before God.  When I confess it (agree with Him I've sinned) it's cleansed, forgiven, and forgotten.

Blessings.

Yes , So do I  !!  Bro James  :HeartThrob:

the Word of God comes and washes   the dirty conscience , usually God forgive me and start praying for the  reason I cussed in the first place !

Hi  bro Eduard ,  I think we should be aware  of our weaknesses , Just   as Paul states  when  he is weak  ,

comes from trusting in Jesus ,

As we ask Him for the help , to stay right with Him

I dont think cleanlineness can dwell in a dirty place  ,

that is why its  [ the mind  ]  in so many places in the WORD  that must be changed first  and is dealt with first   , as we are given the mind of Christ /obedience to the will of God
We sure are learning obedience  with our new minds and hearts towards God   :HeartThrob:

Here's the way I see it:

Cussing and cursing are not the same thing, though they are often used interchangeably.
To cuss is to use expletives - words to accentuate your speech (like added spices to food).
Cussing is otherwise benign, and has synonyms that are generally acceptable.
Webster says to curse is to say "a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one."
The scriptures say "bless and do not curse" and "abstain from filthy language."
Now let's define "filthy language."
Since scripture says it, and since scripture is inspired, then it is God talking.
What is filthy to God?
Sin.
Since language conveys thoughts, filthy thoughts are sinful thoughts.
Therefore, filthy language conveys sinful thoughts - language that promotes sin.
Cussing alone does not promote sin.

To curse is sin.
To use filthy language is sin.
Cussing is not a sin.

Examples of filthy language:  men talking about how many women in their office they would like to "do"; slanderous gossip (since slander is lies that hurt people); a person talking about taking revenge on someone else; a group of teens talking about their plans to cheat on a test or steal something; morally corrupt jokes;  complaining.

Examples of cursing:  "Go to Hell!";  "Damn you!";  "I hope you drop dead!";  "God will take care of you!";  "You may not believe in hell now, but you will when you get there!";  pronouncing (or wishing) ill will toward another.

Examples of benign cussing:  You hit your thumb with a hammer and say "Damn!";  you get startled when your dog jumps on you and say "Oh, crap!";  you are suprised at how hot the weather is and say "It's hot as hell out there!"  (How, pray tell, did these words ever become "dirty"?  Take heed not to subscribe to Pharisee-rules and call them God's precepts!)

That's the way I see it.

I know that's the way you see it j, and that's between you and God, your conscience.

Mine says differently.  Also, to me, it's a bad witness.  I don't believe I should talk like the world, without remorse or apology; adopting the language that basically "everyone" - including the world themselves - identify as being sinful language.  But in the end, it's between each person and their own conscience before God.

Blessings.

Let me add this - Just a little something to mull over.

Cussing (not cursing) openly and publicly, as I just defined in my last post, is not usually a wise thing to do because it is socially unacceptable in most situations.
Perhaps doing something you know is not wise is a sin in itself.
I only cuss a little, and I am careful where and when I cuss - I am usually alone.
But if it's just between me and Jesus, I do it with a clear conscience - even sometimes while I am praying! :laughing7:

I never curse!
I never talk morally dirty!

Words are just words, they are a tool to convey thoughts and expressions.  A new language could develop in the future in which "and" was a "cuss word" but that doesn't make "and" a bad word, it's all about your heart and intent.

QuoteThe good man out of the good treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which [is] good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which [is] evil; for out of the abounding of the heart doth his mouth speak.
-Luke 6:45

If you have evil and hate in your heart your words will follow and a hate-filled person may not cuss but they will speak evil things in "clean" language.  I used to cuss a lot, I mean A LOT.  I didn't see it at the time but I was filled with hate and anger and out of the abundance of my heart did my words drip with hate and anger even when using G rated language.  Since I had my dream/vision in which the Lord called me back to Him I do not cuss hardly at all.  I believe the Lord has put it on my heart that cussing is not for me, I believe it would be a stumbling block for me because of the sinful ways in which I used colorful language in the past.

I believe I am a new creation in Christ but I am not a finished product yet, God is still working on me and the hate and anger I used to feel frequently is ceding into the background.  I no longer feel the need to cuss but that's part of my spiritual journey and my walk with the Lord.  Some may be able to cuss with it out being a stumbling block for them and that is between them and Jesus and I do not judge them.

As for curse words, I agree with J..words are words...God judges the heart.  My only issue is that they offend some people, and I don't want to be an offense...or for that to harm my witness.

That is hard to imagine.  But it's all about societal conditioning.  We have been conditioned to believe that the cuss words are BAD!  So we naturally disassociate Jesus from them.  Who knows, maybe they didn't have expletives in Jesus' day and society.  But I do know this:  Jesus would never have joked about immoral things, passed along slanderous gossip, said anything to intentionally hurt anyone, lied for dishonest gain, or talked about doing anything sinful.  In other words, Jesus would never have misused language in a sinful way (he would never have communicated filthy language).   :2c:
Title: Re: Cursing
Post by: jabcat on June 20, 2013, 03:35:38 AM
I agree with that in large part, j.

But here's where I also take a little different route.  I understand the premise that "words are just words", especially if they just existed in a vacuum.  But let me come at it from a different angle. Words are the vehicle God gave us by which to communicate to ourself, Him, and others.  So they're important.   Isn't there a scripture that says words carry in them the power of life and death?  Not sure what all that means, but I believe there's a pretty good study there in that are.

Anyway, "words are just words".  Here are my other thoughts on it, and I REALLY think you, Shawn, and others have actually indicated pieces of the following (while at the same time expressing some general disagreement in other areas).  And it's this;  there've been statements about society and about certain things affecting a witness, etc. - so words do not exist within a vacuum.  A letter of the alphabet is "just a letter".  But letters put together, words begin to be associated with all kinds of meaning, not just of specific content, but with many other connections.  Then depending on how those words are used, there's of course even more meaning attached.  I'd suggest that with their connections though, words in themselves carry context, imagery (pleasant, helpful, nasty, harmful), emotion (not just stated, but perceived, received, triggered, in others), connotation (pure or evil), identification ("would Jesus speak like this, or more likely, would it be the lost in the world"?), etc., etc...So if words are JUST words, without all the complex, generally universally recognized and accepted meaning that goes with them, we could talk like we want, no one's faith would ever be damaged, no one's feelings would be hurt, no one's conscience would ever bother them, no unbeliever would come away saying "if that's a Christian, I don't need it - I can already live like that".  But language does have meaning, and though I often fail, I believe we should make every attempt to keep our speech clean and also to not wound with words.

I compare it to the eating meat sacrificed to idols thing.  Paul said that in themselves, there was nothing wrong with the meat, that the idols were just baloney, nothing to them.  But he went on to indicate, that because others make connections to it and/or they may be encouraged to do things that offend their own conscience, hampering their living in the kingdom (righteousness, peace, and joy), then it becomes harmful.  So it's not simply "meat is just meat".   :2c:

But like I said to begin with.  As long as we're not just in denial or trying to rationalize, I believe it's each person's conscience before God.

Blessings.

Bad business isn't necessarily sin.  I certainly wouldn't mix up the two.  I can however buy that our heart may be in the wrong place when we curse.  I think more often than not you are right...not always but often.  But, I believe saying shoot, crap, gosh or any of the other made up sub words would apply to that as well.   :2c:

"When an orange is squeezed, orange juice comes out because that's what is inside.
When an apple is squeezed, apple juice comes out because that's what's inside.
When a person is squeezed (emotionally, figuratively), whatever comes out of the mouth is what is inside.

I had a friend many years ago that whatever happened to him, I'd hear a praise God or praise the Lord. When I asked him why he said that when bad things happened, he replied that our opinion of "bad" is not God's opinion of "bad" since ALL things work together for the glory of God. Of course, if something "bad" happened to someone else, he wouldn't say praise the Lord to them(because they might not understand and be offended, but how often do we curse when something bad happens to someone else? I feel sorrow when a friend, relative or "great" person dies, but I certainly don't cuss when "bad" people do - actually, when a bad person dies, IMO, that's a very appropriate praise the Lord time. :Peace2:

I've heard this popular saying in the Christian community before, but it falls short of reality, and becomes insulting at times for those of us who choose to use any word at our disposal (within the boundaries of good judgement, of course) with a clear conscience.  :sigh: When I am "squeezed" I may say "Oh Sh--."  I doesn't mean that I am full of worthless garbage, good for nothing but to be flushed into the sewer.  I am full of Jesus.  I love Jesus.  I love God's precepts.  I want nothing more than to please God and for my life to bring him glory.  Who is anyone to judge that I am full of whatever word I use as an expletive?  That is condemning, judgmental, and absurd.  :2c:

NO offense, of course.

Yeah jbb, don't you hate it when you get the s--- squeezed out of you?  :laughing7:   :LH:

Ahem...

I find a loving, cussing person to be much more refreshing than a religious, non-cussing person. This is not to say I love cuss words. But I could care less whether someone uses them or not.  :2c:

A lot of good points here.  Let me make one more.

Paul advise/principle of abstaining from "eating meat" was, IMO, specific to the recipients of his letter, their culture - they probably felt VERY STRONGLY about certain things like eating meat sacrificed to idols, which became HUGE stumbling blocks to them that they could not overcome.  We should not use that scripture to the point that we alter our lifestyle to be robots governed by what others think of our every move, our every word.  When I was growing up, my Mom would not buy groceries from a store that sold beer.  Well, she could argue her point, but where was she to get food when they all started selling beer?  Did it accomplish anything?  Did it make her a more Godly woman?  Did it right a wrong?  Would anyone have stumbled if she had bought from them?

We must be careful not to become like Pharisees with all the legalistic rules!  It can sneak up on us before we know it.  That sort of thing becomes a stench to the world, and stinks up the gospel as bad as any ET doctrine.  In my viewpoint, we set a better example to the world if we be real people who share God's love, who don't let ourselves become moral robots who taboo so many of the normal things in life for the sake of Pharisee rules made up by man.  I don't follow Pharisee precepts.  I follow God's precepts.  Given the amount of Pharisee rules having been added to religious beliefs in our societies today, I wonder if Paul would give us different advise today?  Perhaps he would say to us, "Stay clear of the big issues, but don't sweat the small stuff."

As I stated before, I use prudence when I use "cuss words."  I don't just spit that stuff out freely.  If you knew me, you would probably assume I don't even cuss at all, for lack of hearing it from me.  THAT'S THE KEY!

It's not either/or.  IMO, that could be a red herring/distraction from the main point(s).  Let's be accurate.  To work on not cussing, does not mean one is necessarily a "religious", i.e., Pharisee-type person.  One does not necessarily follow the other logically.  IMO, that can be just another form of mis-judging the matter.

Personally, I'll be around pretty much anyone, but my spirit more identifies with folks who speak pure things (among other fruit of the Spirit, of course).  It doesn't mean I judge the cussing ("eating") person as unsaved, a degenerate, etc.  But I just prefer to not continually communicate in that manner.  I generally feel it's unnecessary and not helpful.   But to be clear, someone who speaks pure things can also come from a loving person, that's not a Pharisee, but is just trying to be faithful and surrendered to God as best they understand.  Again, not either/or, and just because a person seeks to have God control their tongue, doesn't in itself make them a Pharisee.

" We should not use that scripture to the point that we alter our lifestyle to be robots governed by what others think of our every move, our every word."        --   I agree.  But once again, that's not what's being said, just as it's not being said on the other hand, that we should just dismiss such (any) scripture and just do whatever we want.   No one needs to be condemned by another, or condemn.    I think it's been clearly said that everyone's conscience answers to God, "whether they eat meat, or don't eat meat", if it's truly done in clear conscience and "as to God".   :2c:

I learned very little from my father[ he died quite early in my life] but one thing he told me, and he had a fairly clean mouth. He told me that swearing and cussing was laziness. I have found that to be a very true statement. :2c:

I didn't mean literally what you say you are. I mean if you habitually swore, that's the "old man" speaking. IMO, the bible says we will be judged for every idle word and using a cuss word for an adjective or an adverb is, IMO, not walking(talking) in the spirit. It's almost always used to show displeasure with reality in some way. Either people didn't act as we believe they should(cut us off in traffic for example) or we aren't content with ourselves or what God is doing in our lives. :2c:

Yes, we ain't dead yet, the old man still reigns whether we will admit it or for when a weakness shows itself. And until we are brought/raised to that realm of our Example, which is immortality, we will have these faults and they will always erupt in our walk. But we have the Advocate, Thank you Jesus! :dsunny:

WOW!  So many ways to look at this thing.  Sure leads to some interesting discussion.  So many good points.  All the more reason to approach our language usage with prudence.  The best policy, as with most anything, is - when in doubt, leave it out!  Once you've said something, like salt in the pot, you can't take it back.  Without using the prudence given us by the Spirit, using sensitive words and expletives can certainly be unwise.  Better to err on the side of caution.  Follow the Spirit's leading.  Perhaps He gives some of us freedom in that area, and others not - for a reason of which we are unaware.

True.     Yet we must be careful to let each one judge for himself whether he is at fault, whether in the words he chooses or in any other matter.  We must never try to help others judge themselves. :2c: :2c: :2c:

You're right j, many good thoughts, from various directions.  Much to think about.  Thanks micah and ded for some really good input.  Great last 2 posts j.  Been chewing this over, and this came to me;

If anything we do is not harmful to ourselves or others, and is not clearly spelled out in the scriptures (murder, adultery, etc.);  if it's helpful, pure, praiseworthy, builds others up, lovely, of good report;  and God doesn't convict us of it, then by all means, do it according to His will.  If not, He'll help us with it if we turn to Him.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.   "All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.   Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor." - Paul

I have always found this scripture curious.  If all things are lawful, then can I rob a bank?  Can I sell drugs?  Can I have a different woman every night?  Well of course not!  So I've never understood just what Paul meant here.  What is your interpretation of it?

One of my favorite scriptures.  Such good advise from our brother Paul.  That alone would stop all the filthy language in the world!

Love that last one too j.

As far as the other one, any answer would be "taking my best shot at it", because I don't think I have a perfect handle on it either.  It's a good one to study though.  I'll share a few thoughts.

"All things are lawful".  We're not under the Law.  Is that all it means?  Not sure, but doubt it.

But since we're not under the Law, it seems there are other "laws".  The law of love for instance.  The law of love harms no one intentionally.  If we truly lived by that, doing unto others, I believe we'd keep all the 10 commandments "by default", automatically.  Also, for me, once someone is spiritually reborn, then God through the Holy Spirit goes to work within us, shaping us, directing us, into His will.  It may not be based on the Law, but we're still being brought into His likeness/image.  And IMO, that involves NOTHING except whatever is good, honest, pure, of good report, helpful to others, seeking not its own, etc.       That's why I think some things are a matter of maturity.  I made that statement in another thread about cussing, and it was disagreed with.  But I still maintain, the more we're made into His image, such things will pass away, i.e., maturity.  Don't get me wrong.  I consider myself (my flesh) very sinful.  I'm only made right by His mercy and grace applied to my life.  So I have much distance to go before I'm in His likeness.  I don't think I will be until the next age, when He's given me immortality.  In the meantime, I believe I'll struggle with the flesh.  But IMO, one of the key phrases is "struggle".  By that I really mean, being aware of the flesh, not giving into it, releasing things to Him for His help because I AM weak, and receiving forgiveness for the many times I fail.  But I do beleive I should care about it and take it to Him, not just rationalize it as I often do.  It doesn't work for me.  Thankfully, He disciplines me as a son (and unfortunately, has many opportunities and much need to do so).

I said a lot real quick, hope at least some of it makes some sense.  Gotta go get supper out of the oven. :)   And if He'll help me, I won't over-eat tonight (one of my besetting sins).

Sorry for the bit of humor earlier. Just wanted to share a bit about my own personal cussing issue. About 4 years ago I quit swearing, or anything that could pass as a substitute for cussing. Now I can't even say darn without feeling terrible about it. I have been very blessed by this seemingly simple act of obedience.

1 Corinthians 3

16 Don't you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him because God's temple is holy. You are that holy temple!

This is my rule now. My goal daily is to not defile the temple that Yahweh gave to me. Which means don't look and don't listen to things that do not glorify Yahweh.
