Rev 20:15. "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." So who is good enough to be in the "book of life" Who is in it?
Are saved by works or by grace??
I believe the book of life could be a symbol of Christ himself. I believe they are saved by grace in that grace changes their works and thereby saves them from sin (Titus 2:11).
no one is "good enough" to be written in the book of life. Names who hav subjected their name to the name above every name get written in there, by grace, through faith.
"I call you friends"
Moo! Everyone is cast into the Lake of Fire. Thrown, not voluntarily jumping in.
If we keep in mind who is being damned and who is receiving eternal life, this gets more clear.
Looking at Revelation;
Rev 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Rev 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
You can definitely see that there is sin involved here. But wait, didn't Jesus make atonement for sin, so why would anyone still be punished for their sin? We must remember that God's commandments are eternal and He does not change them.
Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
The flesh body must die, for the fleshly body and mind is entirely sinful.
So who then, will enter the Kingdom of heaven, or more precisely, the New Jerusalem.
Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Joh 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
1Co 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
1Co 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
1Co 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
1Co 15:48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
1Co 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
Therefore, it is our spiritual body that has been born in us, that will have entrance into the New Jerusalem.
But we are currently in a condition of both, the fleshly body and the spiritual body. And in such a condition, our fleshly body is in the Lake of Fire. Moo, the Lake of Fire is that "place" where God's truth and righteousness are refining our very being, separating the wheat from the chaff, removing the metalic impurites , the sin in our lives.
This is not an easy battle within us:
Rom 7:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
Rom 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
Rom 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
I think Paul explains this quite thoroughly.
Baptized by fire:
Mat 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
Mat 3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
Mat 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Mat 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Mat 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Mat 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Mat 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Moo, trees represent man, but more importantly what kind of man. As we can tell what kind of tree it is by its fruit, so can we see which man (old fleshly man Adam, or new spiritual man Christ).
Which fruit are we bearing?
Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
So what about those who do not bear any fruit?
1Co 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Joh 12:31 now is a judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast forth;
Joh 12:32 and I, if I may be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.'
How many? ALL. :dsunny:
Moo? I am originally from Wisconsin, the land of cheese. So, whenever I post My Own Opinion, I will say Moo!
I dsagree that everyone gets cast into the lake of fire -simply because as I read it the scriptures say not everyone does.
Only those whose names are not written in the Lamb's book of life get cast into the LOF.e
For those who are "confessed up"(if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness) there is no remembrance of sin to be dealt with at the great white throne. While I do believe in the corrective aspect of the fire of God for all(everyone will be salted with fire, every sacrifice seasoned with salt) I believe there are different manifestations of the fire of God and the LOF is one of them, reserved for those who have not yet "bowed the knee" to the Lord Jesus.
:2c:
I agree that nobody who is abiding in Christ is in the Lake of Fire either in this life or in the Day of the Lord. In fact, I don't even believe that the LOF is necessarily a punishment for specific sins unconfessed. In other words, I don't believe deathbed confessionals are necessary, for example. I think it's more about attitude, an attitude of pride vs an attitude of humility. I the LOF is a spiritual state of lacking salvation from a whole way of thinking, a whole lifestyle. Peter explained the destruction for those "brute beasts" who literally take pleasure in unrighteousness. I think that is distinguishable from those who don't take pleasure in sin, and display a humble spirit, but are imperfect. If they fail to make a confession on their death bed for some thought or action, I don't think they are in line to be punished for those sins. Most likely their own attitudes would make it unnecessary for God to do that.
I think confession is an absolute pre-requisite to deliverance and healing/ salvation. While I think it is more about the general condirion of our hearts and transparency with the Father, I think specific sins are also important sometimes, depending on the nature of them.
"You will teach me truth in my inner man.....a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not cast out"
I think the LOF is a particular manifestation of the fire of God reserved for those who need aionian kolassis. I believe however that it is similar in nature to all of the corrective manifestations of the fire of God- it is about light consuming darkness. It is about the veil in the heavens being rolled back like a scroll.
I recently said in a post, "The pigpen may have been the prodigal sons LOF". Of course, the prodigal son is a parable. My point was about the nature of correction and and what God is accomplishing trhough it. What God accomplished in the prodigal son was a confession borne out of a genuine change of heart. Basically it was, "Now i realize what a fool I have been" and it was accompanied by a return to the source (Father/Almighty) in a broken and a contrite heart.
I see this as the core of the entire revelation of God to man. He is the I AM, we cannot fellowship with Him unless we see who we are in the light of His grace.
This is the beauty of Christ crucified, the ultimate testimony being a display of lov and grace. When I first saw it I felt remorse, self awareness, and a revelation of the love of God along with a call to walk in it.
Altho it is dfferent and personal with every person in experience and circumstance, I think the raw elements of repentence and confession(transparency) are the same for all, in all the ages, and most effectively expressed in Psalm 51.
51 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
I think a person would do well, if this was the only portion of scripture they ever received, if they could understand it and walk in it. :o)
Yes, a broke and contrite heart. To me, that is a whole attitude, a way of being. He will not cast out anyone who has one, even if they committed a sin and didn't realize it, or forgot to verbally ask for forgiveness at their deathbeds. I personally don't think that is what the LOF is for. I think the LOF is like that pig pen, a place for man to wallow in the negative consequences for sin due to a whole attitude of pleasure in unrighteousness, until they do have a broken and contrite heart.

Cardinal and Seth, I think that is the most beautiful thing to come from this thread. Wow! :punish:
Christ is the BOOK OF LIFE. Good thread.
Awesome :o) Written upon His heart, the names of those united to Him.
Maybe nice to know that the Greek reads
Rev 3:5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of the life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.
Rev 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of the life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.
"the" is translated from what an interliniar shows as of-the
http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/NTpdf/rev13.pdf
So this would be a more correct translation:
Rev 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of the life, of the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.
Rev 13:8 states that BoL is owned by Jesus and about the life of Jesus.
Rev 3:5 is a short hand version of Rev 13:8 or it reads that Jesus is the life. Of course Jesus is Life but does the verse state that?
2 Cor 5:18 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
In a way the book IS Christ because being in the book and in Christ has the same effect called life....

Wow
What a great source of wisdom! I see it. Yes this has really ministered to me! I a struggling sinner. I love the reference to Psalm 91. The Book of Revelation, I think has been the most mis interpreted book in the Bible. I am thinking of look at Phil Mauro's take on it. I have been banging my head on that book for so long. But I now want to look at it spiritually, Not literally and not figuratively, but by the spirit of revelation and wisdom.
thanks so much everyone!

Oh Judah, stubborn till the end.
It was Rev 13:8 that caught my attention. It shows that the Lake of Fire is not "eternal" but only for a time to lead unto salvation.
Whitewings may want to comment on the wedding assignmets as I may be confused somewhat on the Bride and the Body...
Gonna be a long winded answer that likely raises more questions than it answers. I haven't figured out the complete picture as there is so much to learn and unlearn. But I can give you some anchor points. You will see that a huge part of revelation is about the wedding.
Imo nations are always all who are not of Judah/Israel. They are outside the gates, but march in after New Jerusalem is established. Which is after all the judgement stuff. Rev 22:15. Rev 21-24-26
I think none of those nations will be part of the wedding party because they arrive long afterwards.
The guests enter the scene at the seven seals. This may need some explanation.
The contact was signed (=sealed) 7 times.
Bride - David, God's beloved.
Groom – Jesus.
Father of the bride – Jacob (father of Israel)
Father of the groom – Abraham (father of nations)
Scribe – Moses wrote the 5 "Ketubah books"
Adam – First witness.
Noah – Second witness.
The contract consisted of 5 main parts. The 5 books of Moses.
1. Family history of both bride and groom containing a detailed family tree and anecdotes.
--> Genesis. Lengthy genealogies.
2. Personal family history of the bride. Again with a detailed family tree and anecdotes.
--> Exodus. Israel is God's bride.
3. Personal family history of the groom. Again with a detailed family tree and anecdotes.
--> Leviticus. God's family
4. A story filled with anecdotes how the couple met.
--> Numbers. The love affair, joy and sorrow about of God and Israel in the wilderness.
5. Details about responsibilities of both groom and bride before and after the wedding. Payment, rights, etc.
--> Deuteronomy lists all that's expected from God and Israel.
In Rev 5:1-5 we see nobody was able/allowed to open the scroll. Same for the wedding contract. Only the groom was allowed to open it.
I don't know how the 5 parts fit into the seven seals/sections. :-(
Voice, thunders and trumpets are often used as synonyms. In Rev 10:1-3 the thunders speak. The 7 thunders/voices unseal and read/thunder the unlocked sections of the contract. In the earthly wedding contract the groom made all sort of statements like she's pure, she's holy, etc. He could also reject her because she was no longer a virgin for example.
The groom didn't read the sealed section in private. He did read them in front of the guests and bride. So that's an indication the guests have arrived. Th esecond hint is taht they are holding palm brabches which was a custom during weddings. Rev 7:9
Possible link.
Zechariah 5:1-3 I looked again—and there before me was a flying scroll! He asked me, "What do you see?" I an-swered, "I see a flying scroll, thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide.'" And he said to me, "This is the curse that is go-ing out over the whole land; for according to what it says on one side, every thief will be banished, and according to what it says on the other, everyone who swears falsely will be banished."
Rev 10:9-10 And I went to the angel, and said to him, Give me the little scroll. And he said to me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make your belly bitter, but it shall be in your mouth sweet as honey. And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
Ezekiel 2:9 Then I looked, and I saw a hand stretched out to me. In it was a scroll, which he unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe.
Exod 32:15-16 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven on the tables.
Are the visions about the same scroll? The Revelation scroll is called tiny but the scroll of Zechariah is huge – 30x15 feet or 20x10 cubits; which is the size of the Temple porch from which judgments and proclamations were made to the people of Israel. During the wedding ceremony the groom read, pronounced, from the Ketubah scroll so this could be the place the wedding ceremony takes place.
I am starting to understand that "this" is all about the wedding.
Are the Elect, or the Chosen, then, literally the calling of the Bride? Is the Father actually only calling a chosen few during the "church age"?
I had previously posted that Jesus was standing at the door and knocking;
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
I believe WhiteWing had commented that this was specifically for the Bride.

I think so yes. I don't know why He selects certain people. Calvinism is right about election. But not about the reason and destiny of the non-elected.
QuoteI had previously posted that Jesus was standing at the door and knocking;
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

The short version is this.
The groom knocks. The father looks trough a tiny hole in the door. Sees the groom (and his father). The bride's father looks at the bride in a asking way. If the bride nods the groom is allowed inside. I was not an huge suprise because this suprise visit was strategically leaked into the community and the gossip circuit took care of getting the message at the bride.
If the bride agreed she agreed to marry if the price and conditions could be agreed upon. That was bargained over a meal with the whole family. The groom brought a cup with him. 3 cups of wine with a certain meaning where consumed (last supper). The groom said to the bride that he will never drink any wine until they actually get married (Jesus said so too). Then, often years later, they drank that 4th cup and together crushed it to signify nobody ever could use the cup that bonded them.
So teh last supper was way more that just some food. The things written above where done plus other things (sandals) that I would place 2 years later so that's one of the things I still have to work out.
The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come". Let all who are thirsty come, drink freely of the water of life.
IMO, anyone who is saying, "Come, drink freely" - is in the Bride. At the wedding supper, Jesus is turning water(life) into wine(fellowship, communion).
The call has gone out, the Bridegroom comes!
Anyone who is waiting, with oil in reserve for their Lamp(your word o Lord is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path, the spirit of man is the Lamp of the Lord searching the innermost parts, the word of the lord is sharper than any two-edged sword, dividing asunder soul and spirit, His eyes are as flames) will make it into the Feast.
They are hearing the call, "Awake, O Sleeper, Arise from the dead and the light of Christ will shine on you."
Why I believe there is an elect:
Romans 8
18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God (the elect) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.
The creation will hear the words "come and drink the water of life" and when they come, they will be brought into the freedom of the children of God.

The groom had 10 groomsmen who acted as his army (complete with swords) when they carried the groom (dressed as their king) towards the bride.
The bride had 10 maid/virgins who's task was to assist the bride in every way. One of the tasks was to keep the lamps going and run out towards to groom to light the path to her house. Those maids certainly where not the bride. So not everyone with a lamp is the bride. But they did have very high standing for sure. The were among the 22 who had 2 wedding parties. Not just one as the parents and all other guests.
There was also another rule set in stone: No lamp, no party.
Thank God the gospel is not rules set in stone :o)
On the contrary.
The Gospel is rules/laws set in stone and it's immovable good.
Everything God did/does is for paving the road His (ultimate) purpose which is the Gospel. If the Gospel is literally in the stars, why do you (seem to assume) He didn't do the same in many other aspects of life?
God has ser forth many principles in the creation, in the templ, in the histories etc.
But Jesus often broke the rules. He said, The wwind blows wher it wills, nd u hear the sound but u dont kno where it comes or where it goes, so it is with evryone who is born of the spirit.
Paul spokethat we are God s lettrs, writtn not on tablets of stone, but upon human hearts.
Traditions can offr insights but i wouldnt interpet the word thru them myself.
Wow typing on this (my first) smart phone is really challenging lol.

The Jerusalem council of Acts 15 declared gentiles need not follow Mosaic Law to be saved.. "let no one judge you concerning meats or holy days or sabbaths".
The POWER of God for transformation begins and continues "by faith".. "not of works lest aNy one should boast" (oh my! imagine!! :laughing7:  )
Jesus said to simply not murder is not enough, to simply not commit unfaithfulness is not enough.. Paul, apostle to the gentiles, wrote the law is a "tutor" (babysitter) for un-born-again persons..
And almost all New Testament letters declare the law is not able to change a person's heart which is what is needed, as there is only one source of all "goodness".. Paul wrote that to "mix law with grace is to fall from grace" as it dilutes (imo) the POWER of God for transformation - which is the goal and what is needed (desperately! ) Leaning on the law to 'please God' is to disobey the gospel (Hebrews 4) and I believe the New Testament is telling us it implies some inherent source of goodness in our self, or self as a source of goodness.. And grace of course is not license..!
To observe the Sabbath.. and to not eat meats, may indeed be quite superior.. but not required in the New Covenant.. "
Let each one be fully persuaded in their own mind" - Top enemies of the gospel in the infant 'church' were the "Judaizers" and the "gnostics". Either one could have shipwrecked the faith if allowed..
Marie Glen, amen
1 Tim 1
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
Galatians 5
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The power to do Gods will is by the Spirit and not the letter.

:cloud9: I think Christ is the book of life, also, and the more of Christ we display we become books that can be read of all men, the living Word made flesh, an active transformation that goes on continuously until He be all in all. My :2c: Blessings....
:iagree: so my :2c:
I think the book of life is a very deep book ;o)
As it is written, ""And the thrones were seated and the books were opened"....... books? hmmmm
I can't wait to read the book of remembrance from malachi....."And those who knew the Lord spoke together and the Lord opened a book of remembrance".
Might be required reading in the "getting acquainted with aionian life" class after the resurection :o) lolol

This is amazing, I just "saw" this today.
Believers...
Rev_3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Rev ... (The Bride)
Unbelievers, after a little heat...
Rev_20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
but...
13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. ... (Wedding Party)
And All Nations...
Rev_15:4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. ... (Israel, Wedding Guests)
And the Jews...
Rev_3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. ...(Guests, but get seated in back?)
:cloud9: I really loved this....
