Hello everyone, I apologize in advance if this seems like a very simple or dumb question.  :NewB1:  I sat down to read my bible and truly try and figure out what it says for the first time yesterday. I read the book of Romans and it seemed to me like it was saying that only those who have faith in Jesus could go to heaven, and that those who do not will be condemned. I listed a few below:

Romans 2:7 - To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. -- read in a straight forward way, i know it doesn't = ET, but then what is the wrath and anger?

Romans 3:22 - This righteousness is given through faith in[h] Jesus Christ to all who believe.]

Romans 3:25 - God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Romans chapter 5 then to me clearly showed UR though (5:16, 5:18, 5:19). But... romans 5:1-11 was talking about how we are all justified by faith, and that we can have peace and hope because of Jesus's sacrifice for our sins, so does that mean the verses in 5:12-20 that are talking about how Adam brought us all death by his one sin, but Jesus's sacrifice brought us all life only apply to people that believe? To me that is the way I read it, especially when I read Romans 5:19 - "For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous." Just "many" will be made righteous.. not all?

Could someone please explain this to me. It is very very possible that I am reading this entire thing incorrectly and without context. I am doing it without any guidance and am just trying to read it and interpret it for myself.. which I am finding very hard. I would greatly appreciate some feedback

hi Jo! Christian Universalists believe all will come to believe. I suppose we differ on details.. you know how we humans are.. The best verse I can think of right now is how Jesus said He would draw all to Himself. We can read this at John 12:32. If your bible has italicized words, they're words added to the verse by translators.

The bible is inerrant.. but human translators aren't, what with being human, lol.

I haven't read most of your post yet. But will now and I will try to address every verse ..until baby grand daughter wakes up.. then will do the rest later if I have to. Mostly because I love a good quiz and there's not many good bible quizzes around.
God bless! :gsmile:

I think the wrath is a natural law - yes, really. That's because I think God is life itself, and that He "is perfect" - Mt.5:48.

So that means, first off, that when He endowed thinking and reasoning ability to angel and man, a whole new world (or tree!) of possibilities came about! And what happens when someone thinks differently about any thing differently than how God chooses?

They become imperfect, the opposite of life! So "Christ Crucified" was built into the "kosmos" from the foundation/beginning.

:o not only is baby stirring.. but the chickens are making a huge ruckus outside! (lol)

Quote

...where was I..?

"Every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord" Philippians 2:11, and in the original Greek word used, confess, is included "wholeheartedly". And the verse itself says "to the glory of God".. so a joyful thing! Not forced. (Also not robotic, which I have to assume would be His other option, other than allowing freedom of thinking, reasoning, and - key to this whole thing? - learning.

"Wrath" to my understanding of what i read in the scripture, is consequences! And not even that He's so interested in even natural 'punishment' but because of how infinitely valuable it is in teaching us the futility of wandering away from Him.. from He who is life and is perfect. I mean logically, it just can never work, right?

Amen.. there is only salvation/life in Jesus and through faith in Him..

The thing about "as all die in Adam" which is how 1 Cor.15:22 says it, check out 22-28!

"in the same way all will live in Jesus"

But back to Romans, in the verse Jesus is "the one" and humanity is "the many".

"As death came upon the many through the one man Adam, in the same way, the many are made  righteous through the one man, Jesus". I'm quoting from memory, hopefully I'm not too far off in my quoting.. i know it says through the one about both Adam and Jesus.

Also key of course is the phrase "in the same way"..

Those are some VERY good questions! And it is very discerning to want to know the answers! So that all in scripture agrees..

Amen   Marie .............

its hard to hear  what the Spirit is saying ,  when fear is gripping your senses  and your life is turned upside down and on its ear ......
Dear Jo ,
I also was scared to  believe  God  will save all , looking at Jesus  forgiving the world  when they tried to kill Him , but   He only laid His life down only to take it back up again .
We as humans tend to complicate things   , that  should be simple and beautiful truths .

I love simple every day speech  and plain as day  explanations

This is the only way  I can learn

when we receive   the Holy Spirit & fire it is our correction    and blessing   at the same time , burning off the dross and keeping safe what is   Holy  and become stronger in the Spiritual nature as the human nature takes the back seat  finally  and we learn to trust in GOD though faith in Him , like little ones .

2 Romans 2:7-11 The Message (MSG)
5-8 You're not getting by with anything. Every refusal and avoidance of God adds fuel to the fire. The day is coming when it's going to blaze hot and high, God's fiery and righteous judgment. Make no mistake: In the end you get what's coming to you—Real Life for those who work on God's side, but to those who insist on getting their own way and take the path of least resistance, Fire!

9-11 If you go against the grain, you get splinters, regardless of which neighborhood you're from, what your parents taught you, what schools you attended. But if you embrace the way God does things, there are wonderful payoffs, again without regard to where you are from or how you were brought up. Being a Jew won't give you an automatic stamp of approval. God pays no attention to what others say (or what you think) about you. He makes up his own mind.

JESUS  CHRIST is GODS HEART OF MERCY   AND OUR COVERING now ,
many will die in their sins ,because the last enemy is death  , not sins , right ?

sins are error and being misled by evil forces  in power and ruled by them =  worldly  and temporary

the thing is GOD ONLY is  without end as beginning=   as  always   , was is and will be   GOD ..........

Time is only our concept  ,not Gods  thoughts and ways and  existence

mankind does everything by time  , GOD NEVER HAS LIMITS , HE ALONE IS LIMITLESS

This helped me more than anything , knowing that God is reconciling the whole world though His one of a kind Son  even if it takes   what mankind calls ages  and stages, this is  of His own glorious plan  , we learn to trust in GOD  FULLY AND TOTALLY  and not of ourselves nor others  , our thinking is  totally deceived  in believing lies  about God , we have to have the mind of Christ  to overcome the world  , because the world is showing us  nothing but death and decay and loss , evil in full swing against the SPIRIT OF LIFE  , but Gods heart is LIFE , with peace and joy and  goodness and mercy  and strength and power  to this there is no end , because it was always  , but hidden from our sight  , we have to be granted eyes to see and  ears to hear and a heart to understand ,  but each in their own order , Paul is the only one given a premature  look  at JESUS  CHRIST IN REVEALING TRUTHS   , and written down for our benefits to this day , but there is a time when JESUS  WILL SPEAK directly to us .and hear what the Spirit of life is saying .....

the dead shall hear his  VOICE and live ,,,,   Hebrews 1 The Message (MSG)
1 1-3 Going through a long line of prophets, God has been addressing our ancestors in different ways for centuries. Recently he spoke to us directly through his Son. By his Son, God created the world in the beginning, and it will all belong to the Son at the end. This Son perfectly mirrors God, and is stamped with God's nature. He holds everything together by what he says—powerful words!

I read many types of bibles , to limit God is foolishness   in my own opinion  and where I failed  before , but not any longer , no  one can change your mind once the mind of Christ is  in authority and ruling your heart .

Give your total surrender to Jesus  and learn to wait on the Lord for answers  and they come in beautiful truths  , no one can steal from you .   they are a solid foundation and is not easily shaken  , by windy spirits  and forceful  storms and dry patches in life , we learn to sit and wait on the Lord to show us  the way of escape .... being in the world but not of it has its  blessings ....  loving the  truth and keeping it real and alive in your heart ........

John 1:12-18 The Message (MSG)
9-13 The Life-Light was the real thing:
    Every person entering Life
    he brings into Light.
He was in the world,
the world was there through him,
and yet the world didn't even notice.
He came to his own people,
    but they didn't want him.
But whoever did want him,
who believed he was who he claimed
and would do what he said,
He made to be their true selves,
    their child-of-God selves.
These are the God-begotten,
    not blood-begotten,
    not flesh-begotten,
    not sex-begotten.

14 The Word became flesh and blood,
    and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes,
    the one-of-a-kind glory,
    like Father, like Son,
Generous inside and out,
    true from start to finish.

15 John pointed him out and called, "This is the One! The One I told you was coming after me but in fact was ahead of me. He has always been ahead of me, has always had the first word."

16-18 We all live off his generous bounty,
        gift after gift after gift.
We got the basics from Moses,
and then this exuberant giving and receiving,
    This endless knowing and understanding—
all this came through Jesus, the Messiah.
No one has ever seen God,
not so much as a glimpse.
    This one-of-a-kind God-Expression,
who exists at the very heart of the Father,
has made him plain as day.

john 12
44-46 Jesus summed it all up when he cried out, "Whoever believes in me, believes not just in me but in the One who sent me. Whoever looks at me is looking, in fact, at the One who sent me. I am Light that has come into the world so that all who believe in me won't have to stay any longer in the dark.

47-50 "If anyone hears what I am saying and doesn't take it seriously, I don't reject him. I didn't come to reject the world; I came to save the world. But you need to know that whoever puts me off, refusing to take in what I'm saying, is willfully choosing rejection. The Word, the Word-made-flesh that I have spoken and that I am, that Word and no other is the last word. I'm not making any of this up on my own. The Father who sent me gave me orders, told me what to say and how to say it. And I know exactly what his command produces: real and eternal life. That's all I have to say. What the Father told me, I tell you."

we must understand that evil and lies has caused us to harden our hearts as worldly  creatures , survival of the fittest  kind of thinking  and self preservation   and dog eat dog mentality  , it is hard to see the good and  love and   the ways of God in a cruel  and relentless  world , but it is  there when you as GOD to reveal Himself  to you

We have to keep our eyes on Jesus  , or we stumble  and fail to our hurt  and no different than anyone else  is , being in the world  as  slaves to sin and error  and  exposed  to evil continually ,   we have to be in the world till God calls us home  , but being not of the world proves  the LIGHT HAS COME TO US  already  and leading us out of the darkness and death  mode of thinking , doing the works of faith in GOD  by keeping our hope alive  in CHRIST, IN THE LOVE OF GOD   strengthening us  and living in us  and have passed from death to life already ........  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+John+3&version=MSG

this whole chapter explains in a simple and honest  and child like way  to me ,
easy to get  the gist of it  , without a whole lot of   self doubts  and fears , confusing the mind  in meanings  , it is a simple approach  with a pure message  of hope in love for God .

we practice  what we get , makes  it easier to  do and when we do those works of faith  , our hope becomes alive  as LOVE leads us into all truth  and we can rest in Him  more and more and less beating ourselves  and others up over  fearing the unknown .Love of God is the very heart of Jesus Christ   and our TRUE IMAGE OF THE FATHER being made known to us , by the WORD and SPIRIT OF LIFE /LOVE  working in us and though us .and everyone will get to this point because  GOD /LOVE never fails anyone of us  , each will come in their own way  as GOD sees  fit  to do   and we trust His way  totally ...

1 John 4:18 The Message (MSG)

To Love, to Be Loved

17-18 God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us.

This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we're free of worry on Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical with Christ's.

There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love.

I tend to make long posts  :sigh:  or say nothing ....... I just hope it helps  , I add the scriptures, lots of them ,lol   because this is how I can perceive  understanding  them and hope you can see where  this is coming from ... for me , it is  His Word  in my flesh by faith in Him .  and still working love in my heart also  , as it is working in others and yours as well   and that is a wonderful thing to happen  to any of us  at any time .... praying is talking to God in every little thing that is  keeping us connected  to HIM  :dsunny: Light &  :HeartThrob:  Love  overcomes the world  in Him and by Him and for Him and though Him  in us all , every  one  in Gods plan of  HIS salvation of  us  all .....

QuoteRomans chapter 5 then to me clearly showed UR though (5:16, 5:18, 5:19). I am doing it without any guidance and am just trying to read it and interpret it for myself.. which I am finding very hard. I would greatly appreciate some feedback

Jo   you are not reading this wrong at all , Many motives of the heart are exposed though obedience ,  such as love your enemies , this to me is the carnally minded  ones who say the love God and   justify themselves and only love those whom love them
not obeying the royal law and love everyone carnal or spiritual ,

Like Jesus forgiven them Father they do not know what they are doing ... that is loving your enemies  when they are crucifying you , taking up the same Cross of Jesus  and forgive  no matter what the offense is ...  it is hard to do  with a carnal mind  and  that to me cast us out of the  faith works  in believing God  .........
and exposing hypocrisy  or play acting  and not being honest with themselves  by coming clean

disqualified from the faith , causes spiritual stunted growth and leaves one stuck   in the path of righteousness  , so yes it is only many  and not all ,  as we are called  , many are called but few are chosen .

being a carnal babe in Christ  is only the beginning of Wisdom and that is fear of the Lord  , it is a good thing , but we have to  learn to walk in the Spirit  and leave our fleshy  sensual minds  behind us ..... and let Jesus become our  Headship /mind of Christ

Jo   I am so happy you  are reading the Bible /Word of God for yourself !!

ask yourself this question   and see if it helps , Am  I trying to read and obey   Gods word with my  carnal mind ?
or do we have the mind of Christ yet ?

For me it was the a ha moment , Romans 8:6-11 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God:

to me this is what disqualifies many  from the faith and the works of faith  as carnal  and not seeking the  Holy Spirit   , our true teacher   2 Tim 3 is hard lessons to examine ourselves and see if we are in the faith or not ...

if we have to judge , we should judge what is right  and use the Law  to  clean us out of all the filth of the flesh ,
many  it seems cannot do it and deceive their own hearts

there is a lot of scripture of self deception , the scribes Pharisees and hypocrites  seem to fall into this category and were rebuked  by the Lord[light had come to expose the darkness ]  openly  and they hated him for his honesty  and truth  , Light and knowledge of GOD  , because it exposed their nakedness before God and prideful  mankind as lacking  and wanted to kill him , we have exactly the same  today .......

Galatians 6:3

For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

James 1:22

But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

Proverbs 14:8

The wisdom of the sensible is to understand his way, But the foolishness of fools is deceit.

most judge everyone else and compare themselves  to one another , to me they are not considering God at all as OUR RIGHTEOUS JUDGE and    number One spot in our hearts  throne , to me  that is very foolish thinking and self deceptive , narcissistic  in nature .

James 1:26

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless.

1 John 1:8

If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:6

If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

to me walking in darkness is walking the the carnal mind  and fleshy   selfish realm

and it does  disqualify  them and they will be last whom desire to be first ...  our faith is tested by fiery trials and learn obedience  though them   by suffering  same as Jesus showing us the pattern , keeping our  thoughts and desire of the Father in mind at all times  ,,,  aware of Him in all things

I hope this was more on track to your question ....   :dsunny:    :HeartThrob:

Hi Darryl,

Will you explain what you mean a bit?

jo

Hi everyone, I know it has been a while since I posted here.

I have been trying to read/understand the bible through a clear lens but I have struggled. I have read Romans, Philippians, Jonah, Lamentations, and a few others. While reading them as a whole there were a few verses that tripped me up and as I plainly read them (with no knowledge really...) they definitely seemed to back up the idea of ET? Lamentations 3:31-32 was what I clung to back in December when I had a huge breakdown about ET (couldn't leave my bed or eat because I felt so sick about it), but reading the whole chapter and doing research on the context...it made it seem like God WAS merciful and forgiving, but that he might NOT forgive them?? Does anyone have any info on that?

I am trying to read/learn without an ET mind but it is hard. It is funny though because I actually was never taught ET. I just knew it was what *most* christians believe. I don't understand how this is such a popular belief. I have a lot of friends who are not believers, but are really great people, and thinking that all of them would end up in hell is really what got me. I don't think I could walk around happy each day and go to church believing that..

and THANK YOU so much for all of your thought out replies. It is so helpful to be able to turn to a community that helps others figure out the TRUE word of God.  :friendstu: Even when I see a verse that seems to me to be ET in nature, I truly believe that God loves us all, as his children, and would never subject us to an eternity of torment, no matter what we do.

Jesus spoke of body n soul suffering destruction but never the spirit of a person....like a surgeon cuts out cancer or decaying flesh so God will cut out and destroy sin...when gold is purified by fire the impure parts are destroyed

'the many' made sinners = every human being for ALL have sinned says the Bible ....'the many' made righteous = every human being...the same Greek words for 'the many' are used in both instances.
"I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance".Isaiah 45:23
