Luke 2:14 different translations

What is up with the giant discrepancies in the translation of this verse?? Is it because the translators couldn't believe that it said peace to all men so they had to twist it to say "peace to those on whom his favor rests" and "peace to those with whom God is pleased" and "peace to those who have his good will?" The KJV and Young's literal both have similar translations in this case, and a few others also have similar translations to the KJV---these just say "good will toward men"

I was thinking about this verse because it is a "Christmas" verse (please let's not open up the discussion of Christmas though) and it is a good one to support UR in certain translations but not others.

Interesting question.  According to the Greek interlinear the word  eudokias/εὐδοκίας  is there in the greek, so maybe it's a matter of how it's "technically' translated, and perhaps even more so, how it's interpreted?  What it really means?   :Chinscratch:

What it really means?   

if that last word is in the earliest manuscripts (maybe someone will dig even deeper);  and if it means what it's often translated as (with whom He is pleased);  is God pleased with all men now?  or just the firstfruits/elect/believers in this age,  and will only be pleased with the rest after their correction in the next age? 

add..i just looked around, and there is some interesting commentary about how the new birth in Christ brings peace, goodwill within oneself and toward others, ending rebellion between man and God, etc.  also verses about how reconciliation to God through belief in Christ brings peace, such as "my peace i leave with you, not as the world gives", etc...

it gets even more interesting though when commentator Barnes says the following, indicating God's reconciliation of Himself to man (coming to mankind and offering His Son ["general grace"] - even though we ultimately must also be reconciled to God ["individual grace" specifically applied]);  "peace) Luke 2:29.—ἀνθρώποις, men) not merely among the Jews. Heretofore men had been regarded and spoken of unfavourably among angels: now these latter, as if in wonder, give utterance to what seemed a paradox, good will among men!—εὐδοκία, good will) The newly-manifested pleasure [favourable inclination] of God towards the whole human race [name], in his Well-Beloved."

The only other instance of that greek word is here: Php 2:13For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Is it possible that His good pleasure in Luke 2:14 just means God is pleased to give peace on earth to all men?

Maybe it's a stretch :)

And I agree, Jabcat, that maybe it is peace and good will toward the elect now and the rest later.

The thing is, do any of us truly have peace now? I've had moments of it, but I think even with the knowledge of and belief in Jesus and God and His plan, it's still a rocky road down here on Earth. So then I was thinking the peace and good will must be something yet to come (new heavens/new earth) that the birth of Christ started into motion but wasn't fully realized yet (obviously). And the birth of Christ individually within us as well does bring peace but also in my opinion/experience that peace is just a taste of what is to come.

kind intentions, good will, good pleasure, good desire, delight- these are all exchangeable for eudokias.

"Glory in highest to God and on earth peace in men kind intentions"

So that is how it reads without the junk prepositions thrown in. The question is whether eudokias  connects as...

"men of good will"

"men with whom He is pleased"

"good will towards men"


One thought is I wonder how good the news is if the angel was saying...

Fear not for we have good news of great joy to all the people....... God is happy with those who make Him happy! :o)

God has sent a Savior to save those He is already pleased with!


Also, there are no such prepositions such as "with whom He is" -all four of those words are just pure additions to the text.

If you place the comma differently you get "on earth peace, in men kind intentions" which is what I lean towards

In Phil 2:13 "for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure(eudokias)."  tes eudokias

It reads simply

Theos gar estin ho energon en hymin kai to thelein kai to energein hyper tes eudokias
God indeed is the  energizer in you and the to will and the to work for His kind intentions.


Nothing conclusive in all that, people can read it according to their own mind, but this is one I think the King James got right.

I like verse 10 -

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. - which doesn't vary that much in the translations, like 14 does.

14 "Glory to God in the highest,

the word translated "good will" - "eudokia"

which meaning includes "satisfaction" "kindly intent"

I liked that...GIL.......faith that He accomplishes what He said He would.  The problem,as far as I can see..is when we don't walk in that faith/or walk by the appearance of our eyes.
