I DO know that there is no eternal torment in Hell, Sheol, Tartarus, Gehenna or whatever you want to call it. However, that is not the issue. The issue is whether the "stay" in the lake of fire is eternal or not. The Bible says that The lake of fire is the second death, but also that "the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever"...

The Lake is just step of limited duration.
The bit about "their smoke" isn't entirely clear for me. Yeah, could mean temporary.
My yet unfinished view...
Temple sacrifices must be taken into account.
Mark 9:49 Everyone will be salted with fire. 50 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other."
The above verses make a connection between fire and salt. Literal sacrifices, animals, were cleaned inside out, rubbed with salt and then burned of the Altar of burned offering.
Can't remember the verse right now  but in the OT is a verse that God gladly accepts the smell of the accending smoke. He accepted the offer. So what if the smoke you mentioned is "smoke of acceptance" ?
My full view: http://home.online.nl/spamfree/Lake/index.html (http://home.online.nl/spamfree/Lake/index.html)
It's a bit confusing cuz it could almost be presented as "being extinguished", never to be seen again, but of course, Universalism would then lose credibility!
Jock
By the "smoke ascending and pleasing the nostrils of the Lord forever" I took it to mean that God never forgets our sacrifices. He is pleased thinking of them. The memory is imbedded with the smoke and thus forever in God. :dontknow:

Hi Jock and all ,
I dont say a whole lot anymore these days
but I am so glad you brought these up
I have a personal view I just would like to share , that does comfort me
It has to do with Jesus saying I have a baptism to be baptized with and how STRESSED I am till it be accomplished ,
for me the very urgency in Jesus words tells me just how signifigant this truly is for us all
its in LUKE 12 :49 JESUS HIMSELF COME TO SET FIRE TO THE EARTH!
Divisions are from Jesus Christ in His own words says He is taking the peace from the earth in verse 51
Now take ,what I believe Peter says, IF the LORD had not left us a seed ,we world be as sodom and Gomorrah
so in a word , we know the world is now on fire , literally not so much as it is symbolically certain
when Jesus baptized he gave them both the Holy Spirit /Ghost and FIRE !! Acts 2 they had the flaming tongues of fire settle on each of them ! different languages , yet they understood what was being said .
and most important for me is " blessed is he who is in the first resurrection , [IN CHRIST ] for the second death has no power , this seed found in every one born again , is Christ and its what endures the fire , for God is a consuming fire
its appointed unto man to die once / and than judment , when you die in Christ you are than resurrected in the corprate BODY OF CHRIST , Hid in Him
for me there is only ONE right now alive to God the FATHER and its JESUS CHRIST and those found in HIM/with Him
this is the only name under heaven by which you must be saved and to me its the ONLY NAME written in the lambes book of life
when Jesus gave a clue to say , how amazed the disciples were when the spirits were subject to them , Jesus said be more thankful that your names are written in the LAMBS BOOK OF LIFE , but for me the name is JESUS CHRIST and there is no other name worthy of glory to the Father
this is just my ways of thinking and no one has to agree with me , but I believe this whole heartedly , the lake of fire is where each of us have endured the submersion of death and come out and up alive unto God by Jesus Christ and His name is your new name , that know one knows except him who recieve it .
The lake of fire is very elusive , there is no name or place its even mentioned except in REVELATION ! but consider the whole world is on FIRE , now as we speak , even when the time Jesus hung on the cross to now and the place of the skull was called , Golgotha or Calvery
but spiritually called Sodom [submersion ]and Egypt [world ]
EtymologyThe name Sodom is derived from Hebrew: סְדוֹם, Modern Sədom Tiberian Səḏôm, and Greek Σόδομα Sódoma. The name Gomorrah is derived from Hebrew: עֲמוֹרָה,
Modern ʿAmora Tiberian Ġəmôrāh/ʿĂmôrāh, and Greek Γόμοῤῥα / Gómorrha. The exact meaning of the names is uncertain.
The name Sodom could be a word from an early Semitic language ultimately related to the Arabic sadama, meaning "fasten", "fortify", "strengthen", and Gomorrah could be based on the root gh m r, which means "be deep", "copious (water)".
just some thoughts to please consider only , I am still waiting on more clarity from the Lord's Spirit who teaches us His Truth as He judges and sees fit to give it to whom ever He will in His mercy and grace .
.."only one name in the Book of Life"! I love that! ..and the whole world on fire.. I'm pretty sure I think I agree with that.. and I also, along with that, think of the LOF as the consummation of mankind's history, He comes with fire..yet I find myself thinking at the same time the fire He comes with is also the results..natural results and consequences of man's own doings.. and, the lake of fire, which I also think of as those split atoms of the potentially worst? Warfare man has invented.. So to me, Roseredwhat you said seems to very much fit, we are on fe, all of life is on fire (ncluding to me, the ultimate culmination of humankind's history / life as we presently know it as imperfect.. but God is Perfection (and life) I'm writing on a phone please forgive errors..
PS - I have wondered if "the smoke which rises up to ever and ever" isn't a highly poetic way of the Holy Ghost saying the memory/lesson of it will rise up forever and ever" ...?

Scripture does not say "for ever and ever." It is only your version of scripture that says that. An "aion," literally translated "eon," is a period of time not endless time.
"And the fumes of their torment are ascending for the eons of the eons. And they are having no rest day and night, those worshiping the wild beast and its image, and if anyone is getting the emblem of its name." (Revelation 14:11)
"11 The torment spoken of in this prophecy is of various lengths and limited to specific classes. All of mankind who have not the seal of God on their foreheads will be tormented five months by the locusts, under the fifth trumpet (9:5). Satan and the wild beast and the false prophet will be tormented (20:10). The fumes of the torment of those here spoken of last for the eons of the eons. These are the supreme sinners of mankind, hence shall be tormented until they die (16:2,8-9, 18:8), some of them by the blade (19:21)." "According to the grace of God which is being granted to me, as a wise foreman I lay a foundation, yet another is building on it. Yet let each one beware how he is building on it. For other foundation can no one lay beside that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone is building on this foundation gold and silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw, each one's work will become apparent, for the day will make it evident, for it is being revealed by fire. And the fire, it will be testing each one's work -- what kind it is. If anyone's work will be remaining which he builds on it, he will get wages. If anyone's work shall be burned up, he will forfeit it, yet he shall be saved, yet thus, as through fire." (1 Corinthians 3:10-15)
"10 Paul had laid the foundation in Corinth. Apollos and others were building on it. The gold and silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw, represent the character of the doctrines with which these teachers seek to edify the ecclesia. It is not a question of quantity but quality. Wood, hay and grass would easily make an imposing pile, but they will not stand the fire in the day when each one's work will be tested. They doubtless represent the human philosophies and base additions to the truth which today almost cover up the great verities of divine revelation. Gold stands for that which is divine, silver for redemption, precious stones for those gems of grace which adorn them, especially the secrets at which Paul has been hinting.
14 Let all who teach take this to heart: their work will be tested to see what kind it is. It is better to have a little after the fire than much before it.
15 The question here is not salvation, but service. It is not concerned with the conduct of the believer but with the doctrine of those who teach." (Concordant Commentary on the New Testament page 251)
The "lake of fire" is not "hell." "Hell" will be cast into the "lake of fire."

Torment is the word that trips me up. The greek is "basinos" which is: Testing by the touchstone: torture:
The state and condition of those being tormented: The smoke of the fire by which they are tormented. You guys all make credible points but the verse that for, gets Universalism past the Lake of Fire is this one:
1 Corinthians 3:15
If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. The exact details about the LOF is hard for me to comprehend but I cast faith that God is full of mercy and loving kindness.
Best regards

Torment is the word that trips me up. The greek is "basinos" which is: Testing by the touchstone: torture:
Those definitions are correct; but not when the Gospel was written.
I quoted an article from a highly respected lexicon below. It was not before 288AD basinos slowly started to get additional meaning of checking calculations. And after that the meaning of torture.
Obviously theological dictionaries shouldn't list definitions more recent than when that word was penned down in the original manuscripts.
βάσανος, βασανίζω, βασανισμός, βασανιστής
1. The βάσανος originally belongs to the calling of the inspector of coins. It is linked with the Heb. root בחן ("to test") and the Egyptian bḫn; ("basalt"). According to K. Sethe.1 bhn is the word which underlies the Heb. בחן2 and the Gk. βάσανος. βάσανος is generally accepted to be a loan word. βασανίτης is most closely related to it. Βασανίτου λίθου ὄρος is the mountain of the bḫn stone. R. Herzog3 thinks that he may deduce from the etymological development that the ars spectandi, the testing of gold and silver as media of exchange by the proving stone, was first developed by the Babylonians,4 then came to the Aramaeans and Hebrews by way of Lydia (Λυδίαλίθος [Bacchyl. Fr., 14, 1, Blass]; βάσανος, Bacchyl., 8, 58), and from them to the Gks. In non-biblical Gk. βάσανος is a commercial expression, or is used in relation to government. It then acquires the meaning of the checking of calculations, which develops naturally out of the basic sense of βάσανος, βασανίζειν (P. Oxy., 58, 25 [
288 a.d.]). In the spiritual sphere it has the figur., sense, which is closely related to the original concrete meaning, of a means of testing (Anth. Pal., VII, 54: ἀνδρῶν κρινομένων ἐν βασάνῳ σοφίης).
The word then undergoes a change in meaning. The original sense fades into the background. βάσανος now comes to denote "torture" or "the rack," espec. used with slaves (P. Lille, I, 29, 22; Ditt. Syll.3, 356, 12). βάσανος occurs in the sense of "torment" in Theocr. Idyll., 13, p. 13, 5, Meineke; Thom. Mag., p. 94, 4, Ritschl; Demetr. Eloc., 201, 4. An inscription from Cyprus (Salamis), BCH, 51 (1927), 148, 18, contains the malediction: ἐν βασάνοις ἀπόλοιτο. Vet. Val., IV, 13, p. 182, 19, Kroll has a reference to torments of soul (ψυχικὰς βασάνους).5
The change in meaning is best explained if we begin with the object of treatment. If we put men instead of metal or a coin, the stone of testing become torture or the rack. The metal which has survived the testing stone is subjected to harsher treatment. Man is in the same position when severely tested by torture. In the testing of metal an essential role was played by the thought of testing and proving genuineness. The rack is a means of showing the true state of affairs. I
n its proper sense it is a means of testing and proving,6 though also of punishment. Finally, even this special meaning was weakened and only the general element of torment remained.2. In the LXX the word βάσανος and deriv. are seldom found except in the originally Gk. books, or those preserved only in Gk. A corresponding basis in the Heb. is lacking in almost every case. The word group is most common in 4 Macc. With βάσανος and βασανίζειν we here find βασανισμός, βασανιστήριον (tormentum) and προβασανίζειν. In general two groups of meaning may be discerned: a. testing afflictions which the righteous have to suffer in the world at the hands of the ungodly; and b. judicial sufferings which by reason of his conduct the ungodly will receive from the righteous in time and eternity. The martyrdom which the righteous have to suffer can consist in spiritual or physical torments (Wis. 2:19). In a few passages (e.g., Wis. 3:1) βάσανος is to be understood eschatologically. In Ez. 12:18, where we have βάσανος with ὀδύνη and θλῖψις, it has the meaning of eschatological affliction. In Ez. 32:24, 30 βάσανος refers to future torments. In Ez. 3:20; 7:19 (Heb. מִבְשׁוֹל), the LXX has altered the original meaning of the text; βάσανος is suffering in the sense of punishment. There is a similar alteration in 1 Βασ. 6:3, 4, 8, 17, where the Heb. has אָשָׁם and refers to guilt to be stoned, whereas the LXX speaks of trouble for which payment must be made. The same is probably true in Ez. 16:52, 54; 32:24, 30 (Heb. בְּלִמָּה), where instead of shame or disgrace the LXX has affliction in the sense of punishment. The reference in Sir. 30:35 (33:27) is to the punishment of a wicked slave. Here στρέβλη (στρέβλαι καὶ βάσανοι) is par. to βάσανος. In one passage (Wis. 2:19) βάσανος is par. to ὕβρις (mockery).
With βασανίζειν we sometimes have the basic meaning of testing genuineness, as in Sir. 4:7. The predominant meaning, however, is "to torment" or "to torture." In Wis. 11:9 (10) βασανίζειν and πειράζειν are set in juxtaposition.
Of the other translators Ἀ in Qoh. 1:18 and 2:23 has βάσανος8 for מַבְאוֹב, whereas the LXX uses ἄλγημα. In Ἰερ. 20:2 Σ according to Jerome has βασανιστήριον sive στρεβλωτήριον, which in the LXX is found only in 4 Macc.; the LXX and Θ here have καταράκτης. At Prv. 10:8 (LXX: ὑποσκελίζειν) Σ has βασανίζειν, obviously in the sense of punishing with plagues; cf. Ἀ: δέρω (δαρήσεται); the (יִלָּבֵט) לָבַט of the Heb., however, means to bring to pass. Θ at 1 Βασ. 15:33 has ἐβασάνισεν in the sense of penal torments (Ἀ Σ: διέσπασεν, LXX: ἔσφαξε, Heb. שָׁסַף).
3. βάσανος occurs in the NT only in Mt. and Lk. At Mt. 4:24 νόσοι and βάσανοι are co-ordinated.9 At Lk. 16:23, 28 the plur. βάσανοι refers to the torments of hell.10 Hell is called ὁ τόπος τῆς βασάνου.
βασανίζειν means strictly "to test by the proving stone" (βάσανος), i.e., "to rub against it," "to test the genuineness of," "to examine or try," then "to apply means of torture to find the truth," "to harry or torture" in a hearing or before a tribunal.11 In the NT it is found only in the general sense of "to plague" or "to torment." The centurion's servant lying sick of a palsy is grievously tormented (Mt. 8:6).12 To those possessed with demons encounter with Jesus is a tormenting experience (Mt. 8:29; Mk. 5:7; Lk. 8:28). At Rev. 12:2 βασανίζειν, like βάσανος in Anth. Pal., IX, 311, is used of the pains of labour.13 At 2 Pt. 2:8 there is reference to the inner torment of soul at the sight of the acts of the ungodly; Lot suffers as he sees the licentiousness of the inhabitants of Sodom.14 This is the only passage in the NT in which βασανίζειν is connected with the suffering of the righteous. In Rev. βασανίζειν is used of the torments of the last time. At Mt. 14:24; Mk. 6:48 it is used to depict the serious situation of the disciples on the lake; their boat is hard pressed by the waves.15 The suggestion that βασανίζεσθαι denotes the torture of the disciples rowing16 is artificial. In both passages it must be taken passively.17
βασανισμός occurs only in Rev. In 9:5 it is used actively of the torment which will come on men as the first woe after the fifth trumpet. In 18:7ff., however, it is used passively and denotes the suffering of Babylon when deprived of its power. This torment strikes the once powerful city in retribution for its wicked conduct.
βασανιστής does not occur in the NT in the original sense of a "tester" but it is found once in Mt. 18:34 in the sense of a "tormentor."18

Thanks for your contribution! Whilst reading your last post, I was thinking how men, most likely religious men have changed the meaning of basinos from testing by a touchstone so as the slag comes to the surface, to "torture" which does not reflect the nature of God. I used to be a welder (electric arc welder) and after the weld is made there is a slag that must be chipped off, leaving a nice straight tidy weld.
Thanks again

That's similar to removing the dross from the gold or silver. Or wash dirt away with the fuller's soap.

'forever and ever' in the Greek literally says to the 'ages of the ages'...

165 [e] aiōnas αἰῶνας ages N-AMP
165 [e] aiōnōn αἰώνων of ages N-GMP
305 [e] anabainei ἀναβαίνει, goes up;
one explanation is these are 'the penultimate Ages of Ages'...the climax of the Ages, if you will...the Ages when God brings all to fruition, when He finally reconciles ALL to Himself. :dsunny:..or maybe the 'smoke ' goes up to the Ages of Ages as a lasting memorial of the examination and chastening of these ones...still another explanation is that smoke is the result of change..fire changes things into something else...the smoke going up to the ages of ages is testament to the lasting change that has taken place...anyway, one doesn't need to interpret 'the smoke going up forever and ever' as meaning people are burnt alive forever and ever..that is a preposterous way to interpret this phrase.
Jude 7 says Sodom and Gomorrah are the example of the penalty of eternal fire.. So that makes me look at those places and how does the smoke of their burning rise up age to age :dontknow: ...my :2c: It rises up in our memory, age to age.. not forgotten.. :2c:

Eternity in hell ends at the GWT event for gentiles and it starts the day the 7th trump sounds. For the 12 tribes it is the 3 1/2 years that the first 6 trumps take to sound. The 6th one starts something that last for the 42 months minus the 5 months the 5th trump uses up. The 1/3 that die would be something like 2.22B people if the starting population was 6,66B people (between the ages of 20 and 120)
Eternity for the new earth is more like 360M years or 360B. :2c: [mod edit]
