Here is a simple rebuttal to a belief I see here often.

I often see here people claiming these verses in some way shows the salvation of everyone, though it is not used exclusively it is often "thrown into the mix" of some conversation trying to prove universalism, just something I noticed:

Philippians 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Here is a verse that shows that not all whom saith unto him Lord, Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven:

Matthew 7:21  ¶Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Every knee shall bow, and all shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, but not everyone whom says Lord, Lord shall enter, the scriptures are very clear about this, as Jesus Christ himself said this.

And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

but if they call Jesus Lord, not doing the will of the Father it's not to the glory of the Father i guess, or is it?

Sorry, Arcticmonster2003, you're in a wrong spirit with the Scriptures again.  The word "confess" in Philippians 2 means exuberant, thunderous praise and laudation.  Same word used as when Jesus cried out thanksgiving to the Father for having hidden these things from the wise and prudent and for having revealed them to babes.  Look it up in absolutely all of the Concordances and Lexicons that you can get your hands on, online and offline.  Greek word "exomologeo."  Never ever means something that fails to reach it's end or that's pointless or that's forced.

QuotePhilippians 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Is there a time limit on that verse?

People that confess have turned to Jesus. That's the key to salvation. Or is it a forced confession.
If I look up confess in Strong I don't get that impression...

Quote1843 ἐξομολογέω
Meaning:
1) to confess
2) to profess
2a) acknowledge openly and joyfully
2b) to one's honour: to celebrate, give praise to
2c) to profess that one will do something, to promise, agree, engage

In the above verse really linked to the one below?

Luke 17:20-21 The Kingdom of God cometh not with observance: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
So the verse you quoted isn't about entering a real place. Heaven (or the alternative: hell)

So are the 2 verses in the OP really speaking about the same thing?
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

The Kingdom of Heaven is God's ways of doing and being right.  That Scripture is simply saying that, saying that Jesus is your Lord isn't the whole picture on how to make your life work -- keeping that Matthew 7 verses in the context of that chapter and the previous two -- but you've got to enter into the ways of God if you would know life and that more abundantly.  Psalm 103 says that Israel knew God's acts, but Moses knew His ways.  Does Moses failing to enter into the promised land imply that Moses is burning in Hell forever?  Or did he simply fail to enter into the promised land?

The New Earth where Christ Jesus reigns and there's righteousness in the heavens according to 2Peter 3 is the promised land rather than some piece of dirt in the middle east or in the sky somewhere.  Entering into His rest is beyond that, when we're returned to the Edenic state after Christ has delivered up all to the Father in 1Corinthians 15:28.  Failing to inherit the Kingdom of God simply means you're not one of it's rulers to the ages of ages with Christ Jesus.  Doesn't mean you're not still a subject.  You simply got booted out of Office, viz., had your name removed from the Lamb's book of life when you interpret the New Testament consistently.  Doesn't mean that God's permanently wiped His hands of you in either ceaseless torture or exclusion or ceaseless annihilation.

Some only think they should enter the narrow gate.

1C 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Sheeesh.... Jesus is saying that you SHOULD NOT just call Him "Lord, Lord" and Paul is saying that every knee SHOULD bow and every tongue SHOULD confess Jesus as Lord to the glory of God the Father.  And yet you want to equate or overlap the two as if Paul is saying that many knees SHOULD make an empty confession of "Lord, Lord" which is SIN... to the glory of God the Father?

BTW since when does Christendom preach that only those who DO the will of the Lord will be saved?  I keep hearing "accept Jesus as Lord" which amounts calling Him "Lord, Lord" without regard to actually following Him.

And what happended to "context".  This passage is about salvation, true confession, true bowing, of the heart.  It is not about empty confessions.

  • Isaiah 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. 23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. 24 Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. 25 In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

After reading the responses, I guess you guys don't need my input as you've done an excellent job replying to arcticmonster.

does not necessarily mean He won't.
