The words considered are apollumi (G622 - apollymi), lythesetai (G3089 - lyo), and katargeo/katargeitai (G2673).

Rare usage of 'destroy' for translation of these words in non-eternal situations (here understood as those temporal situations where the eternal aspect of the destiny of the object of discussion is not specifically, nor even arguably, involved) in both the KJV and NASB has been suggested (here) as indicative of theological bias in their translations.

A statistical review of KJV usage indicates that the claim of rare usage of destroy(-ed)(/perish(-sfx)) for non-eternal situations is false for the KJV.

Thus, the claim of theological bias (for such translations of those words) cannot be justified on the basis of frequency of usage.

A review via blueletterbible.com of all uses of these words in the KJV
found that destroy(ed) (and perish(-suffix)) is used for these words
more frequently in temporal matters, and
less frequently in regard to any possible eternal destiny,
finding 73% temporal usage of destroy(ed) (usage not having to do with eternal destiny),
and 27% usage that is arguably regarding eternal destiny (though some could be considered merely temporal.)

Finding a total of 33 uses (G622 - 26, G3089 - 2, G2673 - 5),
24 (G622- 19, G3089 - 1, G2673 - 4) are related to temporal, in this life/age, related events,
and 9 are related to arguably eternal destiny (though some of these may have actually been temporal in nature as well.)

Review of roots of those words did not find any translations of the roots or roots of roots etc. as destroy(ed).

I did observe 'perish'(-suffix) is also among the translations for G622 apollymi, and examined that as well.
apollymi appears as perish(-suffix) 33 times,
with 55% being temporal in nature
and 45% being eternal or arguably so
Thus perish also could not be considered as being rarely applied to items in a temporal context.

Any other related forms/translations of these words I have overlooked that would significantly alter these statistics, or perhaps lend credibility to the notion that theological bias existed in the translation of these words in KJV?

Any egregious error of scholarship (mis-counts/-calculations, overlooked word usage, or ?) observed?

The specific data with some comments follows below.

Rare usage is not the issue, mstranslation is. Also I wonder how throughly you studied this, because out of 92 occurrences appollumi is used as destroyed only around 15 times and as you listed the percentages and all I dont think you looked at all of them in context, but are using the words of commentators.

Therefore the issue is this.

If appollumi is used as destroy 15 times, and the rest of the time is is "lost" "perished" "ruined" etc, how is it that you determine it ought to "authoritatively" be read as "destroyed".

In other words if it is "lost" in one place and Jesus spoke in that one place- WHO DECIDES IT IS USED IN A CERTAIN WAY IN ANOTHER PLACE? You? Some commentator who is already biased towards destruction in Hell forever?

The problem I have with your method is you want to pick apart words and ignore context.

NAS: at that time was destroyed(appolumi), being flooded... 2 Pet 3:9 If that word is read as destroyed, which I will cede, altho it could just as easily be read "riuned", "wasted".....

We know that the world itself was not actually destroyed in the sense that it no longer existed. It was purged of evil men but not of evil. It was not tormented eternally. To destroy does not mean to eternally toment.

Jesus said, "I came to seek and save that which is lost(apollumi)"

In that case, by your reasoning, our point is sustained because Jesus came to seek and save that which was destroyed, and will not finish until He has done all that He said... "If I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men unto me".

If destruction means eternal torment How can Jesus truthfully say that, or say

"Behold, I am making all things new, write down these words, for they are faithful and true"

But they are not faithful and true if He is leaving a mass of humanity and fallen angels in the lake of fire for eternity AND

If they are eternaly tormented- THEY ARE NOT DESTROYED ARE THEY? They are still in existence, still conscious, and still separated from God,
so....

Jesus is a liar. The Bible is a joke. And eternal torment in Hell is forever.

The truth is that that foul poison is so deeply ingrained in its proponets that they are unable to see simple contextual confirmations like

That which is still alive and in torment has not been destroyed. That which is being tormented is not dead.

If Jesus came to save that which was destroyed/lost/apollumi, then apollumi DEFINITELY CANNOT MEAN ETRNAL TORMENT, unless one believes Jesus cannot do what He says, and is just speaking in generalities

But that would be a mighty careless thing to do for MESSIAH who is THE LOGOS, wouldnt it?

Lysethetai is one of my favorite biblical words. It means dissolved.

2 Pet 3

The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish(apollumi), but everyone to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements(stoicheia) will be dissolved(lythestai) in the fire, and the earth and its works will not be found. 11Since everything will be dissolved(heuresthetai-exposed) in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?

SO Peter reaffirms that the Lord does not want anyone to appolumi- be lost, to preish, or to be destroyed.

But these translators have played fast and loose with words, interchanging "destroyed" and "dissolved" as it suits them with no consistency.

In my example above dissolved is used twice but the word  "heuresthetai" is not dissolved or destroyed- it is "exposed".

In verse 11 which in the King James we have "destroyed" again, but not apollumi or lysethetai- but heuresthetai- which means "exposed"

So, the earth is destroyed by it "works" being "exposed". and they are exposed by fire, or "pyr" which means, and I quote Strong's

Short Definition: I burn, am purified by fire
Definition: pass: I burn, am set on fire, am inflamed; glow with heat, am purified by fire.

So if Jesus is saving that which is "apollumi" by dissolving this present evil age and purifying it in the fire of His righteous love- then He has fulfilled His own word(who is the word). If His fire purifies, then that which is destroyed is the life lived in darkness and corruption, not the soul itself. And the purification that comes by exposure dissolves resistance as the love of God is revealed to the :eyes of the heart".

So the result of Peters dissolving by fire is that "we look forward to a new heavens and a new earth in which dwells righteousness".

As I hav posted many times, the word "stoicheion"- translated "elements"- is translated "elementary principles" every where else(Col 2, Hebrews 5 for ex.) So..

The elementary principles are dissolved, the earth is purified through the fire of His word, that whch oppses Him is dissolved and subjected, until God is all in all, "all things are made new" as Jesus proclaims in Rev 21:5. Then there is a new heavens and a new earth in which dwells righteousness- and not before.

How can the new heavens and the new earth be full of righteousness if people are being tormented forever? Revelations 14:10 states they are tormented by fire and brimstone "IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LAMB ANF HIS HOLY ANGELS"- so how can there be a new heavens?

Surely heaven is where the Lamb is, surrounded by myriads and myriads of His holy ones.

Before there is a new heavens and a new earth, the fire HAS ALREADY DISSOLVED all that resists the love of God, by fire all will have been purified, all resistance dissolved, every knee will have bowed and every tongue confessed that Jesus Christ is Lord - Because He must reign until every adversary is made a footstool for His feet, subjected to HIS LOVE.
The Logos is complete, but it is not completely understood. http://www.hell-is-a-myth.webs.com/
