When, how, and why did stories and pictures of wings and angels become popular? Just what is an "angel?"

Angel  H4397 mal'âk From an unused root meaning to despatch as a deputy; a messenger; specifically of God, that is, an angel (also a prophet, priest or teacher): - ambassador, angel, king, messenger
Angel G32 aggelos From ἀγγέλλω aggellō (probably derived from G71; compare G34; to bring tidings); a messenger; especially an "angel"; by implication a pastor: - angel, messenger.
G71 agō  A primary verb; properly to lead; by implication to bring, drive, (reflexively) go, (specifically) pass (time), or (figuratively) induce: - be, bring (forth), carry, (let) go, keep, lead away, be open.
G34 agelē  From G71 (compare G32); a drove: - herd

I have heard the saying that we all have a "guardian angel," where can I find information on this? I am not trying to be a smart aleck, I just see alot of what is taught by orthodox religion[especially christian religion] to be unscriptural. Some thing man has impressed upon those who want to believe in "things."

Like what is a cherub? H3742 kerûb  Of uncertain derivation; a cherub or imaginary figure: - cherub, [plural] cherubims.

Or wings H3671  kânâph  an edge or extremity; specifically (of a bird or army) a wing, (of a garment or bed clothing) a flap, (of the earth) a quarter, (of a building) a pinnacle: -  + bird, border, corner, end, feather [-ed], X flying, + (one an-) other, overspreading, X quarters, skirt, X sort, uttermost part, wing ([-ed]).   From H3670 kânaph A primitive root; properly to project laterally, that is, probably (reflexively) to withdraw: - be removed.

Cannot we here and now be called angels, should we be given a message or a pastor should be given a congregation?

Just When, how, and why did stories and pictures of wings and angels become popular? Just what is an "angel?" Is it a religious thing? Is it that mankind has to have a "picture" of something before man understands or accepts what the Word of God offers? I am just wondering.

I think the idea of angels as winged creatures comes from either the time in Babylon during the deportation, along with the concept of eternal hell.  Or possibly from the fact that Seraphim have wings and Cherubim.

I was reading the other day the root word in Aramaic KRB means plow.  KRB is the word cherub in Hebrew.  The calf is one of the faces.

I believe the cherubim represent our flesh.  The veil that was torn was covered in cherubs, the mercy seat was covered by cherubs.  In Ezekiel the cherubs hold the throne of Christ, our hearts are the throne of Christ, wherever the Spirit went the cherubs went. The golden calf was a cherub (probably) "these be your gods that brought you up from egypt", the Israelites worshipped the gods that cover.  (nobody would ever give themselves credit for something instead of God  :Sparkletooth: )  The covering is the veil that is cast over all faces (same word) death Isa 25.

The letter kills but the spirit gives life.  The 4 faces have been likened to the 4 gospels (matt-lion, mark-ox, luke-man, john-eagle), the letter here is the cherubs which are the flesh, which hold the spirit which is Christ in you the hope of glory.

The Israelites camp was situated with 3 tribes on each side of the tabernacle, each of the main tribes of those represent a face of the cherub.  The camp acted as an outer covering to the temple, but inside that outer square was the Levites.  Physical Israel represents the law of sin and death, the old man with the priest/new man inside.

They block the way to the garden/holy of holies.

Could we say the cherubim represent our minds?

Not of the cherub, although that would be interesting as well.

An angel is a Spirit-powered message of God.
It could be a billboard, or a sunrise or a person.

Angels can be men.  John the Baptist was an angel sent to prepare the way for the LORD.

But angels can also be supernatural.  The supernatural ones are all over the Bible.

Yes we have guardian angels.   Their specific job is to minister to those who will inherit salvation [Heb 1:14].

11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits commissioned for service because of those who are about to be enjoying the allotment of salvation?

Yes we have ministering spirits, we have messengers who are dispatched help us in our walk. One could be a brother or sister who has a word for you, a direction to take. Or a pastor who gives light to your darkness.

Psa 91:11  For His messengers He chargeth for thee, To keep thee in all thy ways, ...to help and aid our walk.
Psa 91:12  On the hands they bear thee up, Lest thou smite against a stone thy foot.    With faith their words are a lifting, to help us to not stumble.

These as I see it are those men, woman, or perhaps an ass or other animal  that He may use to keep us in a safe place.

Why don't you find a Bible that speaks English?

Are these men, and women, and donkeys, too?

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

for the mind set on flesh is death
Yep, I see 2 in us.  2 men, 2 minds, 2 bodies (eventually).

Is there a difference between the flesh-sarx-carnal  and the carnal mind?

Beloved Servant

Whats this:   flesh-sarx-carnal    <———

Ah!
I see your point.

Even the translators are at odds with the intention.

KJV (151) - carnal, 2; carnally minded + (5427), 1; flesh, 147; fleshly, 1;

NAS (147) - bodily, 1; bodily condition, 1; body, 2; earth, 1; earthly, 1; fellow countrymen, 1; flesh, 129; fleshly, 4; life, 3; man, 1; mankind, 1; nation, 1; personally, 1;
