Aionios

The simple definition of aionios is found expressed by St. John. (John 17:3)

"This is life aionios, that we may know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You did send."

Aionios zoe expresses not duration but quality of experience.

Both aionios zoe & aionios  kolasis  point to life of quality and punishment of quality.

"Father, it's time. Display the bright splendor of your Son so the Son in turn may show your bright splendor. You put him in charge of everything human so he might give real and eternal life to all in his care. And this is the real and eternal life: that they know you, the one and only true God,  and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. I glorified you on earth by completing down to the last detail what you assigned me to do."

Amen FineLinen my friend. The NT authors could have used "aidios" or "ateleutos" to describe a truly eternal/endless punishment. Yet they chose aionios instead, which lines up with the OT olam, both pertaining to age.

?If Christ and the authors of the New Testament had insisted on endless duration without question, there were Greek words at their disposal, a?dios (eternal) or ateleutos (endless) for example. These words have no ambiguity to them and were even used by Flavius Josephus, a first century historian, to describe the eternal retribution and eternal imprisonment teachings of the Pharisees and the Essenes respectively. Nevertheless, we were given the use of a word which is hinged to the relative time-duration of its subject. It is my belief that this was deliberate.?

I think the ?fire? is veRy much temporary.. Mostly spiritual even as we experience.. God chooses when for all, so I figure same process for all. So the fire as spiritual. But kake of fire, as temporary because not so much a place, but event(s). The three mentions are at three very fiery events - Armageddon the ?bonfire? the (still) tares gather to - Mt.13:30 see the when of, Rev.16:13-16; the fiery final defeat of the adversary - Rev.20:7-10; and the fiery ReGenesis- Rev.21:1-5, 2Pet.3:12-13.
    The greek word ?tel? gives a good insight. It?s translated ?end? but means ?end-aim? and is the root of telescope which can be used to show how God?s program (and prophecy) progresses, in widening scopes until reaching full scope at God?s end-aim. So during the Lord?s long second advent he will do  the same works he did during his so brief first one. With helpers serving, called reigning, as to do His works can surely be said to be reigning.
