What did Jesus mean by this term? Any thoughts?
I mean He had no problem in using the word hell (as is translated), so why not here if indeed that is what He meant, as so many teach.
I thank you sis for making me think , this discussion can go in so many different directions :friendstu:
I read Jonas 2 his prayer and sounds like a very descriptive clue to sheol /Hell what is hidden in the hearts being void darkness Ecc 3
That Jesus expounds upon in Matt 16 and Matt 12 the sign of Jonas
and the lifting up of Light shines forth from that point on

I think of this as the grave.. was buried (in that cave) in the heart of the earth..
"hades" of course was the word recorded, that Jesus used, though if He would have spoke Greek? or would He have spoken Aramaic? And then I don't know what the word would have been.. "Hades" - "the place of the dead" I would also consider, to still be, the grave.. As it was in the old testament.. "in sheol there is neither thinking nor doing" .."silent in sheol" ..."all meet in sheol" .."oh that you would hide me in sheol"
"your end" of this life, evil ruler/king of babylon "shall be as worms for your bed and maggots for your covering" the grave..
The verse in 1 Peter3:? which says "He went via the Spirit and preached to those souls who perished at the flood, while the ark was being prepared.." I believe should likely read more like "went via the spirit to those perishing" (locked into judgment/flood cause they were not getting into the ark) "and preached to them via the spirit while the ark was being built"..
"He descended to the lower part of the earth" Eph 4:9, to
the dust of the grave..
"gehenna" I think has been talked about quite a bit here.. (the city dump where even the bodies of criminals were burned and which dump was kept burning - better to throw an offending hand into it than to have body and life perish there because of your crimes)
"three nights and three days" (buried) "in the heart of the earth"..
Amen!
I believe the heart of the earth is the great darkness
Matt 4 Jesus Begins His Ministry
...15"THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES--
16"THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED.
" 17From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
I have been sitting in silence and as to what to think about these times we are in . If that light be DARKNESS How great is that darkness !! :sigh:
the thoughts in mans hearts are evil continually as the days of Noah to Me Jesus said ... ?????
I know there sure is a rising of an invisible war going on to the naked eye .
But a spiritual warfare is very real in the eye of the beholder
Why did JESUS say , if that light be darkness How great is this darkness , because for me it is HIS WORD HAS NO PLACE IN THEM AT ALL :sigh:
My Word has no place in you the WORD IS TRUTH AND LIGHT John 8
What are we being set free from ? darkness and all the evil that the prince of THIS WORLD possess... many prisoners to sin /error and the church sleeps for sorrow ? :sigh:
The Truth will Set You Free
...36"So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37"I know that you are Abraham's descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
38"I speak the things which I have seen with My Father;
therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father."...
wow  what a truth huh??? denying Jesus with the dark deeds /works
John 3 For God So Loved
...18"He who believes in Him is not judged;
he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19"This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
20"For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed....
How powerful of a statement is this truth !!!
How are those sleeping going to wake up except for some blast of some very LOUD trumpets ! ?!
I am just so grieved :sigh:
I know that no one can hear ?? they cannot hear JOHN 8
WHY does the world not want to be healed ??
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me,
for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.
43"Why do you not understand what I am saying?
It is because you cannot hear My word.
44"You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.
He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.
Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies....
JESUS LIT THE FIRE and LIGHT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT on THE EARTH poured out His Spirit as the hearts are burning in the heat of an oven over 2000 years ago [LUKE 12 49 ] Not Peace, But Division
49"I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! 50"But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!...
I do believe its an awakening to be sober and watching and waiting on the Lord full armor of God
Ephesians 6:11-18King James Version (KJV)
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
JESUS SAYS STAND IN TRUTH .. ABOVE there is John 8 not sitting in darkness ..
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints
Love wants everyone all to have salvation , not just a chosen few .. that seems to be the error of pride working in mankind in my opinion
I believe the "heart of the earth" is ....is a phrase used to describe the "Root" of a problem.
For example, if I was to say to you, I want to get to the "heart of the matter"....I would be saying,...I want to get to the "root of the problem."
In turn when Jesus says this I believe He is saying He's about to enter into the "Root of the problem". So I agree with Rose, that the problem and the Root of that thing is no doubt the darkness and despair of our hearts in this earthen vessel.
Mat 3:9 And do not think to say within yourselves, We have a father, Abraham. For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
Mat 3:10 But already the axe is even laid at the root of the trees; therefore, any tree not bringing forth good fruit is cut off and is thrown into fire.
Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you in water to repentance; but He who is coming after me is stronger than me, of whom I am not able to lift The sandals. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,
Mat 3:12 whose fan is in His hand, and He will cleanse His floor and will gather His wheat into the storehouse. But He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
And yes it can be seen as hell or sheol, but not in a literal whole in the ground or tomb so much as it is a .......hollow, empty place, a gulf fixed, a place of request, prayer, a crying out if you will, of our hearts. But that place is in each and ever one of us, I believe that is where He went.
2Co 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2Co 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
Look at the comparison of Hell and destruction to the heart of men here.
Pro 15:11 Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?
GNB Pro 15:11 Not even the world of the dead can keep the LORD from knowing what is there; how then can we hide our thoughts from God?
MSG Pro 15:11 Even hell holds no secrets from GOD-- do you think he can't read human hearts?
In my understanding this is the Heart of the earth that Jesus went into. Look at the Prime root of sheol/hell, I understand it to be the heart of men.
shaw-al', shaw-ale'
A primitive root; to inquire; by implication to request; by extension to demand: - ask (counsel, on), beg, borrow, lay to charge, consult, demand, desire, X earnestly, enquire, + greet, obtain leave, lend, pray, request, require, + salute, X straitly, X surely, wish.
I do love what you shared :HeartThrob: God bless you .
If I be in hell you are there , that is the heart ''root ''
we are to be rooted and grounded in LOVE / WHICH IS CHRIST same exact meaning ..
Col2 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Psalms 139 You have Searched Me and Know Me
...7Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. 9If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,...
God searches the secret and hidden places of the heart
Also Ecc 3 ;11 describes the heart condition ,11 He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.
Jer 17 The Sin and Punishment of Judah
...9"The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? 10"I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds. 11"As a partridge that hatches eggs which it has not laid, So is he who makes a fortune, but unjustly; In the midst of his days it will forsake him, And in the end he will be a fool."
Matthew 6:4
so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Acts 1:24
Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
Romans 2:6
God "will repay each person according to what they have done."
Romans 8:27

I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
Revelation 22:12

1 Kings 8:39
then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know every human heart),
1 Chronicles 28:9
"And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.
Psalm 44:21
would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
Psalm 139:23
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Proverbs 17:3
The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart.
Ecclesiastes 9:3
This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead.
Isaiah 59:18
According to what they have done, so will he repay wrath to his enemies and retribution to his foes; he will repay the islands their due.
Jeremiah 11:20
But you, LORD Almighty, who judge righteously and test the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.
Jeremiah 12:13
They will sow wheat but reap thorns; they will wear themselves out but gain nothing. They will bear the shame of their harvest because of the LORD's fierce anger."
Jeremiah 20:12
LORD Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.
Jeremiah 21:14
I will punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the LORD. I will kindle a fire in your forests that will consume everything around you.'"
Jeremiah 32:19
great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.
Ezekiel 11:5
Then the Spirit of the LORD came on me, and he told me to say: "This is what the LORD says: That is what you are saying, you leaders in Israel, but I know what is going through your mind.
Ezekiel 14:5
I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols.'
So much more to consider in this ..

James 1 Perseverance in Temptation
...14But each one is tempted when he is carried away
and enticed by his own lust. 15
Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
16Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren....

Just as a root feeds off of the nutrients in the soil ..... so do we feed (feast) of the body of Christ in which we are planted ..... and grow, for the Father causes the increase, it is His work in us that causes us to grow.

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8 Therefore it says,
"When He ascended on high,
He led captive a host of captives,
And He gave gifts to men."
9 (Now this expression, "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) Eph 4
"Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down), 7 or 'Who will descend into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." 8 But what does it say?
