Why have you forsaken me?

Was Jesus forsaken? And if so how?

  I'm no greek scholar, but it seems that the situation he found himself in was such that one would have expected his father to come and save him, but he received no help from the father.

It seems that Jesus was fulfilling prophecy as Messiah by repeating what David, the former Messiah, had said in one of the Psalms.

Psa 21:1 O God, my God, attend to me: why have you forsaken me? the account of my transgressions is far from my salvation.
[Or] My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? [why are you so] far from helping me, [and from] the words of my roaring?

Maybe this was the moment that Gods spirit departed Jesus, as Jesus absorbed man's sin?

I think mzo is on to the point.  Sabachthani is a word of Chaldean origin, Christ's words echo back through time to the place of Abraham's birth.  Lama sabachthani more precisely means why have you left me.  Because of the Chaldean origin, He may have been asking why the lineage of Abraham had left Him as well. I think it was at this point that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice;  he was totally human, and so, he died totally alone  ... so that no one else ever needed to again.

Are these verses empty, with no meaning? If the writer of Hebrews says, I will never leave or forsake you(that's me and you) does it even seem reasonable or possible that the Father would leave His Son?

If Christ were one dimensional perhaps.  I've never been convinced that He was.  The human Christ had to die, was the spiritual Christ alone as well?  Maybe not, I don't think so.  I am often alone physically, so are many I know.  God is with us in Spirit and my spirit takes comfort from that, but my body is still alone.  If Christ was truly human, is it beyond the realm that He HAD to physically die alone, like all men?  Is it beyond the realm of the possible that this frightened Him (the human Christ), just as it would frighten most people?  He was frightened enough to sweat blood just from thinking about it.  This might also show us that He was truly human.
