Luke 23:54 And the day was a preparation, and sabbath was approaching,

Luke 23:55 and the women also who have come with him out of Galilee having followed after, beheld the tomb, and how his body was placed,

Luke 23:56 and having turned back, they made ready spices and ointments, and on the sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the command.

---The women saw how Jesus was placed in the tomb so obviously this verse is on crucifixion day.

---The spices were bought before the Sabbath

Mark 16:1 And the sabbath having past, Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of James, and Salome, bought spices, that having come, they may anoint him,

---They bought spices after the Sabbath.

So the women bought spices before and after the Sabbath. The Greeks texts speak of Sabbaths (plural). But the same word is also used in situations were it is certain there is only one Sabbath involved.

This seemingly contradiction may be "solved" in various ways.

 

 

Variation #1

Day#1: Jesus was buried on Passover -> Not a Sabbath day

Day#2: The following day was the first day of Unleavend bread -> Sabbath day

Day#3: The next day the woman bought spices. This is after Sabbath on Day#2 but before Sabbath on Day#4 -> Not a Sabbath day

Day#4: Weekly Sabbath

Problem#1: Why didn't the woman annoit His body on Day#3. I bet they would like to give Jesus this honor as soon as possible.

Problem#2: This scenario means He was placed in the tomb on Wednesday. There is no way He could have been in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights and have been resurrected on Sunday. He must have been in the grave before sunset (Wednesday) because after sunset (Thursday) there was a Sabbath day. Rolling that heavy rock before His tomb was work and not allowed.

Variation #2

Day#1a: Jesus was buried on Passover -> Not a Sabbath day

Day#1b: On the way back home the woman bought the spices -> Not a Sabbath day

Day#1c: They prepared or started to prepare the spices just before sunset. -> Not a Sabbath day

Day#2: A regular weekly Sabbath day. They rested -> Sabbath day

Day#3a: Saturday evening Sabbath ended and Sunday started. The woman worked all night to prepare the spices.

Day#3b: Sunday morning they arrive at the tomb.

Problem#1: Luke states the prepared the spices. It's not mentioned they bought something. This was before the Sabbath. But Mark states they bought and prepared after Sabbath.

Mark mentions they bought spices.

Could it be that in Mark the woman bought additional spices?
