Exodus Chap 4;1-20

Moses hesitates for fear of Pharoah and public speaking. God tells Moses to throw down the staff Moses has in his hand. A staff was a travel aid and offered some protection while on the road from thieves, robbers and animals. The rod was like a billy club. David mentions the rod and the staff. David tells God, "your rod and your staff comfort me."
Moses throws the rod down. It becomes a snake and he runs from it. God tell Moses to pick the snake up by the tail (Wrong thing to do if you know snakes) but Moses does it anyway and the snake becomes a staff once again. Then finally in verse 20, it says Moses left with the "staff of God" tightly gripped in his hand.

Not sure of something? Give it to God. Let Him let you see the thing for what it truly is.
If he tells you to pick up again what you've thrown down to Him, it will now be Gods' and you will be custodian of what it was you were looking to for solace and comfort rather than God.

The Book of Jasher relates that Moses' rod was, in times past, Adam's digging stick.  It had ended up with Jethro after a rather involved history after a ride with Noah.
