What's up with Skype?

I'll likely have a Skype account by the end of the month.  How does the promises/claims/hype on the website translate into the reality of the service?  Something to brag about?  Complain about?  Is there something much better out there, or that if you've got either the headphones or phone for skype that you could also use the equipment for??
