There is a glorious equation in Romans 5 that points directly to "imputed." That equation demonstrates two federal heads. The one encompasses all mankind in sin and despair, the other, the Last Adam, in resolving the situation.

kathistēmi =

To appoint.

To set one to administer an office.

To constitute.

"Adam, who got us into this, also points ahead to the One who will get us out of it. Yet the rescuing gift is not exactly parallel to the death-dealing sin. If one man's sin put crowds of people at the dead-end abyss of separation from God, just think what God's gift poured through one man, Jesus Christ, will do! There's no comparison between that death-dealing sin and this generous, life-giving gift. The verdict on that one sin was the death sentence; the verdict on the many sins that followed was this wonderful life sentence. If death got the upper hand through one man's wrongdoing, can you imagine the breathtaking recovery life makes, sovereign life, in those who grasp with both hands this wildly extravagant life-gift, this grand setting-everything-right, that the one man Jesus Christ provides? Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right." ~MSG
Are our broadest hopes broad enough? Shall there be a nook or abyss, in all the universe of God, finally unlightened by the Cross? Shall there be a sin, or sorrow, or pain unhealed? Is the very universe, is creation in all its extent, a field wide enough for the Son of God?

I'll try to put some scriptures to what I said. The word "imputation" is really just an accounting term similar to crediting or debiting an account. Here is an example of the concept found in Rom 5:19.

Rom 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Would you prefer the word "made" rather than "imputed"? The word translated as "imputed" (Gk: λογίζομαι) is found numerous times in scripture though, particularly with regards to faith being "imputed" or "accounted" or "reckoned" for righteousness.

Here are some examples:

Rom 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

same Gk word: λογίζομαι is found here:

Rom 4:22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
Rom 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
Rom 4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

Regarding the soul. I'm really not sure what else to call it's condition other than:

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved

Col_2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

2Co 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

Perhaps we can think of the soul as being unpluged from the spirit prior to being regenerated. Would that be better? Is there a better way to describe it?

As for sin separating us from God:

Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
