"Incomplete" NT verses.

This thread is not about any sort of corruption of the original text.

The NT often quotes OT verses. To really understand those verses we need to check their context in the OT.
The OT qoutes in the NT are often not complete. I think it's more correct to say "NT verses often are a shorthand form of the OT verses."

Why?
Verses often represent very important concepts of Jewish society. Everybody knows that verse and it's significance. Well, during Jesus' time that is......
Compare it when you went to school. Everything was explained in a longwinded way (OT verses)
Later when you got a job you use the skills learned in school (OT verses).
When speaking to you collegues you often use shorthand (NT). Just mention a few keywords (NT) and all is clear.
But in reality the use of those keywords aren't correct/full explanations. But due to the professionalism of the people involved everyone understands. In a way a single word expands in your head into whole chapters of the textbooks of your school period (OT)

Or even simpler. Ever noticed people in sports often give weird signals. They make an odd hand gesture (NT) and the whole team understands what they discussed in lenght during training (OT).


So...... NT is for professionals. OT is for students :-)



In this thread I want to collect shorthand NT verses and their matching OT verses (+ context if needed)

I think that's a really good point and something most people nowadays don't think about. There are lots of "shorthand" OT quotes in the NT. Don't have any off the top of my head but if I come across some in my reading I'll post. :)

Not the fact that the NT quotes but that the verse should be looked up/studied in the OT.

  • The New Testament quotes from all Old Testament Books except Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. This does not mean they are not inspired.
