Ah yes Jim Palmer.  I have his book Divine Nobodies in my office at work...about half way through.  I also follow him on Facebook.  Not sure I buy everything he is selling.  But, he does have some really good stuff from time to time.

We Tenties could add this:  Telling a child that if they are not especially good every minute, every second for all their lives, they will be thrown into Hell.

PPl don't understand that the old threatening language of the Old Testament is in a voice to be understood by the lowest.. the most reprobate.. the least intelligent.. After all the time was a time of widespread paganism which was religion of sex rites and human sacrifice. And the outcome of such is indeed fiery consequences..

I think of it like telling a small child not to touch a very hot stove, or don't run into the road, you have to be very very firm to pierce their understanding, such as "NO!!" "NO!!"

But as the child matures they realize, it wasn't the parent which would burn the child, but the hot stove. The consequences.

Now of course we are in the age of "scoffing" so this is one of the many things used to discredit our Heavenly Father.. But in essence they are ignorant arguments. And the Word sheds light on all, and each and every one of the arguments againbst Him and against His Word...man's reasonings are so incredibly fallible, why do we ever bother with them? So many compare God's Word to men's thoughts! I think that's backwards.

Ultimately there is no good thing whose source is human, but all goodness proceeds only from God.. but I agree wisdom is called for is training/raising children and in "rightly dividing the Word" - rightly understanding it, is of course necessary to rightly divide it :)

This is very widely taught by Catholics. To branch off of that, they say that if you die without having confessed (and by that they mean having physically gone to confession with a priest) a venial sin, you will go to purgatory, and if you don't confess a mortal sin, you will go straight to Hell. Back in the days when I did go to confession, I sort of hoped I would die right after so I could be sure I would go straight to Heaven.

Just dropped in for a final visit for this week... I was in such need of words of encouragement... positive words... I've been so surrounded by negativity these past few days that negativity had started creeping into my spirit...  The very first post was this one...

Thanks Shawn and Jabcat for bringing back this post of Marie's...  Marie, your post more than encouraged me... it was so uplifting ... and such a wonderful positive way to deal with a very negative topic (child destroying doctrines) and with so few, but edifying words...  all goodness proceeds only from God... and we learn that wonderful truth through the Word...  may we all continue to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ... Savior of all men... to Him be all glory.

Thanks for a neat post and comments. Raising children is a real challenge, I know from experience. How to balance correction with loving discipline and real love for them. We all hope for children that have a realistic assessment of life as they grow up along with having a peace and joy in living their lives. The likelihood of a child growing up in a happy and loving environment usually will lead to rich and productive lives. Having a sound moral code and knowing right from wrong is so very important. Teach a child the way he should go and he will not depart from it.
