Title: "Christianisms"
Post by: Doc on May 20, 2009, 03:20:39 AM
Sometimes I really have to wonder about mainstream Christians. I saw this on the reader board of a local private Christian elementary school, just a few blocks from home:

"Be kinder than necessary".

:Chinscratch:

Just what exactly does that mean? I mean, it sounds nice, but... it's completely nonsensical, scripturally or otherwise.

First of all I would like to ask the "churchie" person who decided to put "be kinder than necessary" out for passerbys to read is: "just exactly how does one measure Kindness into kind, kinder and kindest?"

I aree with Pauls reply that it means just "don't be yourself" and I am adding "just paint a manufactured candied apple to order smile on your face and that should do the magic trick of pleasing everybody in the worldly way" well anyway at least until folks start to see  the religious paint job that is holding it in place starts to crack.

Peace,
Fire Walker

Maybe it would have made more sense if the quote had been completed: "Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle."

Yeah, it could have been made a fuller, more complete statement rather than just a good laugh for UR folks.  Something along the lines of giving everyone the benefit of the doubt that any sour or other attitudes they walk up to you with aren't about you -- and sometimes reflect deep infirmity of mind and body along all kinds of lines that apart from the Word of knowledge operating in your life from 1Corinthians 12, you'd have no idea; and without the Word of wisdom from 1Corinthians 12, nothing constructive to offer to fix it (or at least a 1Corinthians 14 interpretation of other tongues which often functions as an equivalent of any of those gifts in bridging gifts and fruit with each other); only throw rocks as hard as the ones you're ready to be hit back with; And I can't find the quote from George MacDonald where he has it on a tombstone where someone's asking for the same mercy from God that He would want if their roles were reversed.

Tried to find it online, without trying to find the book right now, and although this two page list of quotes is some great stuff, it doesn't include the quote I was looking for:
