Title: idea about the "age-during"
Post by: anti_nietzsche on August 17, 2015, 06:48:07 PM
Hello again, brothers and sisters, recently I had some ideas about this adverb or adjective "age-during" that we find in many bible translation.

What if it means, something will last until it is fulfilled, completed, finished.

How could I say this in english? The fire will burn "age-during" until it goes out. The rain is pouring "age-during" until it stops raining.

I think this might be the key to understand this word. Something, in our context a punishment, is inflicted for a time until the purpose of the punishment is fulfilled. It means, the punishment is not lifted until its purpose has been completed. A fire is burning without stopping to do so inbetween, until the fire goes out.

That's how we can understand aionian, age-during, and voila, no eternal punishment.

IMHO, the true punishment will be getting declared unrighteous, shameful, evil. And the fire will be the fire of shame.

God bless you much in this difficult time! Many greetings from Germany!

:cloud9: Hi, hope you are doing well. I see your point and that is somewhat the way I see it. No good man punishes his child forever. Is God not more righteous than man? Blessings....

I get it:

during the day or day-during

during the week or week-during

during the month or month-during

during the year or year-during

during the age or age-during.

Maybe "age-during" was not the best word choice.

We must also keep in mind the character of Jesus and the examples of how he acted during his time in Judea. He never pushed anyone inside and allowed everyone to come to him. I am sure that in the afterlife it is no different ... I mean, we will need forgiveness in Heaven too because we cannot be perfect. So there is the means to believe in Christ and receive forgiveness in the afterlife as well. Salvation is about receiving forgiveness. It goes on forever.

My dad was an atheist who didn't put faith in Jesus until he died. At least some days before his death he still explicitly asked for a non-religious burial. But nonetheless he was a kind and good man. I cannot conceive of God punishing him with real fire in the afterlife. That would be barbaric. My mother (she believes in Jesus) and me believe that after death my father had to receive forgiveness from Jesus. After death we don't simply enter heaven or hell. We come to God and spend much time with him. Because, when we die our flesh is gone and we become spiritual people. We are like weak kittens then. Completely different persons without all the sin that we collected in life in our flesh. We will not suffer then, because God has made us new and forgave us easily because He loves us so much.

In my view, I think the many harsh hellfire beliefs crept up in the church because it did not know how to counter earthly evil, like wicked kings, foreign invaders, warlords, bandits, the rich, etc. So the church began to take some verses out of context and to interpret them differently in order to have something with which to threaten evil people. I think this is understandable, but it is wrong. We must have the courage of Jesus Christ in meeting evil with good, hatred with love, violence with peace. At that point we know and understand Jesus and relate better to him.

God bless you much!
