Do the math . . .

Prove this one wrong . . .I haven't seen it mess up yet . . .

Take the last two digits of the year you were born.  I was born in 1960 ...so I'd take "60"
Add those that number to the age YOU WILL BE this year.  In my case, I'll be 51.

The claim is EVERY TIME it will add up to 111. 

I think this is pointing to a numerology principle, but it's just too freaky!!

Nathan, this is just simple math.  No numerology...

Me: born in 72, age 39 this year.  72+39=111.  It works because we are in year 2011.

1972-1900 = 72.
2011-1900 = 111.

111

Last year it would have been 110.

Your birth year + your age will always add to 111 in year 111 (2011).


(Don't you just love math?  I do.  Its God's language...)

For me math is one of the biggest proofs of the existence of God.  If you really study things, you see math everywhere.  And there's all these cool tricks you can do with it (like you posted above).

Math is beautiful.
You find math in music (intervals between notes, 12-tone scale, frequency of notes, timing, transposition, chords, etc).
You find math in beautiful shapes and art (geometry, curves, symmetry, patterns, etc)
You find math in a rainbow (waves of light, arc of color, etc)
You find math in nature everywhere (tree theory, waves, reflection, symmetry, etc)

You find math everywhere and don't even realize it most of the time.

It's not always 111.

It alway works because teh formula is:
Birth date + age = this year.

Yeah but 'you'd think" that it's not supposed to be the same number.  We were all born on different days and we're all (okay "mostly all for you literalists out there . . you know who you are :)~  ) the different ages so YOU'D THINK that the sum would reflect the differences, but it remains the same total for all of us. . . .there's just GOT to be a UR principle in there somewhere.

10-8=2  &  8+2=10
10-7=3  &  7+3=10
10-1=9  &  9+1=10

Your age is is the difference between this year and your birth year. -> Simple substraction.
Then that difference is obviously can be added to your birth date to get today's date.

A=birth
B=today
C=age

C=today-age

A+C=B
B-C=A
Etc

Jesus died.
3 women decided to buy spices to anoit His body.
They each have 10 shekels. 3x10=30 shekels.
In the shop they buy a bag of spices for 30 shekels.
When they are gone the shopkeeper remembers ther spices are on sale and only cost 25 shekels.
He sents his dishonest assistant after the woman to give 'm 5 shekels back.
The assitant keeps 2 shekels.
He gives each woman 1 shekel.
So each woman payed 10-1=9 shekels.
3x9=27 shekels payed for the spices.
The assistant has 2 shekels in his pocket.

27+2= 29 shekels.

Where is that other shekel :dontknow:

5 shekles . . .three women . . .two left in his pocket . . .5 shekles.

3 shekles for the women subtracted from the 30 would of course be 27 as you say . . .but then you turn around and add the two remaining back to the 27 instead of continuing to subtract . . .unless of course the crooked assistant decided to turn in the two shekles he kept.

And it's probably just as well . . .had he have given three women 5 shekels to divide evenly  . .if they're anything like my relatives . . .that would never have ended well. :grin:

Ok how about this one. 

You are on a game show where you get to pick a prize behind one of 3 doors.  Behind 2 doors is a hellish pile of garbage, behind the other door is a heavenly prize beyond your wildest dreams.  You can't see what is behind the doors.

You pick one door.  The game show host then opens a different door and reveals that there is indeed a hellish pile of garbage behind that door.  He then offers to let you switch your choice to the other remaining door that is still closed.

Is it to your advantage to switch to the other door?

No, because the door he opened is the heavenly prize, the garbage is indeed behind that door that you picked and the other offer switch door is also full of garbage by process of elimination.

Example.
10 doors.
Player picks door#1
Treasure door#5

The gamehost opens 8 doors. But isn't allowed to open door number #1 and door#5 (he knows the treasure door)
That means he is biased.
Imagine you stand there and you see the host opening doors and then skips door #5
Wouldn't that a Hummm moment?

The 3 door game works the same but the skipping is not as obvious. But the host does skip. He doesn't randomly open a door. So the bias adds to the odd.
I don't know how to explain it better. Anyone?

But I have proof you can easily test your self.
Make a little drawing of every possible combination.

Say you alwasy pick door#1
If you switch in example#1 you loose.
But in example #2 and #3 you win.
Remember the host may NOT open your door, neither he may open a T door...

Simple maths

There is only 3 doors. The host opens door3, which leaves 2 doors.

So you can either open door 1 or door 2. The treasure is behind either one.

50/50 chance There is no advantage to switching, the host does not know which one has the treasure and has no influence on the game. If he did know, a wink or two might change the odds, but otherwise even if he did know the odds would still be the same.

Maybe this page will help.  It has a simulation that can run thousands of trials and show you the results.  Its not 50/50.  Its 33/66.  Just scroll about halfway down the page and enter the number of trials you would like to see.
